South Africa Aliwal Shoal - Blue Ocean Dive Resort May 2023

Great time in the city of Umkomaas South Africa, about one hour south of Durban. Multiple days of diving the Aliwal Shoal with Blue Ocean Dive Resort. The main attraction was the abundance of Ragged Tooth (raggies) sharks, who were present on every dive. They normally congregate here in large numbers between July and November to mate, so we were lucky to see them here in May. The baited shark dive attracted mainly black tip sharks, and we did spot bull and white tip sharks while on our safety stops.
The potato groupers were fun, as they closely followed us on most dives and were huge. The reefs were healthy with plenty of smaller fish life and lots of turtles.
The most exciting part of each dive was launching the RIB (rigid inflatable boat) from shore, with the very skilled captain navigating through the huge rough waves. We always had crazy weather but one day we had 3 to 5 meter swells and even the mighty captain called off the second dive. Diving South Africa is not for the faint of heart and definitely some of the most challenging entries and exits we've done.
We loved our stay at the Kingfisher Lodge Airbnb, with its great view of the Indian Ocean. We could hear the waves each night. Highly recommend staying here, as it's only a 5-minute walk to the dive center.
