I got my first ML150 Gen9 for my first propper homelab. I love it!!! if you Like them more quiet the ML line is perfect for homelabs. iLO 4 is updatable with care.
I think HPE might have changed their firmware access policies recently because I have been able to get access to all of the firmware for my DL380P G8 directly from their website over the last week. I have no service contract. I updated my iLO to the latest firmware, the Intelligent Provisioning firmware and was able to get the Service Pack for Proliant 8.1 as well.
Gen 8 you can, Gen 9 and 10 require support, the change is fairly recent for gen 8 as I remember no being able to update even the microserver bios without support
Hello. I just got this same server from a recycler. It looks great but has no drives. When i plug in some HP SAS drives from another older server, they are not recognized. You mention that this machine has SAS connectors but it appears you are installing SATA SSD drives. Do those plug into the SAS Connectors? If so, can you send me a link to the drives you are purchasing in the video so I can get something that I know will work on my machine?
Nice video :) I just got an R330 from dell and it's amazing how I can do thing with it,yeah they can be lound the 1u server but if you have a close cabinet and not the fan at 100% all the time you will be able to sleep aha
I have been watching a few of them and if the price is right I'll grab one, they are a tiny bit limited as a server due to the E3 Xeons but they still make great Lab servers and small test servers
Its funny how much power the 1u system costs you in cinebench r23. My old 2u IBM x3650m3 with 16 1tb magnetic disks, 96gb ddr3, and 2 6 core X5675 cpus scores almost 7000 and uses 195-205 watts with 32 nm yet.
Just FYI you can get almost all firmware without a contract, the ILO4 firmware you certainly can get with no issue The BIOS is the only one you can't get without a contract, even then when there was a critical flaw resolved (heatbleed IIRC) they allowed anyone and everyone to download the BIOS. However, if you have A Proliant under support, you can download firmware for any Proliant, (My homelab has a few G9s all of which are upto date as I have some G10s under contract at work ;) )
Well that's cheating if you have a server under support 😁 but Dell, Lenovo, Supermicro all allow anything to be downloaded for there mainline servers, it's just HPE who are stuck in the money making loop
@@JimtheITguy Yeah I know :P but I assume a good number of labbers may have machines of a different generation under contract at work, and not be aware that a G10 under contract allows you to get BIOS/SPP for other units.... The ILO you do not need a contract for though, it's only the BIOS and SPP and but if you need the latest BIOS for your DL120 let me know ;) But I know what you're saying about the Dell/Lenovo/SM letting you have everything, my 24/7 box is a R230, but I've got a number of HPE servers and TBH I prefer the ILO to the iDRAC.
I've never had issues with HPE firmware behind paywalls, the SSP and software is, but that isn't firmware and you don't need it to install the firmware, also in the switch world I've got firmware from HPE for really old high end switches where H3C had it behind a paywall
i'm disappointed that i can't find the firmware for my 2 ml310p gen8 .... i need to find a "friend" that has access to the dvd that updates all firmware and stuff
Thanks for sharing numbers for power consumption
I run an HP DL380 gen9, with a BIOS dated in July 2019. Do you have any recommendations for places to safely download a BIOS update?

After installing AMSD, how loud the fans are on this unit?

@@JimtheITguy yeah you are right the E3 is limit, but I have an E5 around here that will be more better😅😆🧏♀️

It's not all, but I cannot get any Gen9 firmware from HP for BIOS updates because I don't have a supportpaq, that's the problem
i'm disappointed that i can't find the firmware for my 2 ml310p gen8 .... i need to find a "friend" that has access to the dvd that updates all firmware and stuff
It's so frustrating that HPE won't just follow others and allow access to keep the hardware up to date
7:18 only some empty space

Urgh HP. Why are you so anti user…
