Sophos Firewall Home Edition V20 - A Free NGFW for your Homelab and a XG135 to run it on
Sophos have offered home use versions of there firewall solutions for years, first with the UTM(SG) range and then with the XG since Sophos launched it. Now V20 has become available for the home licensed users lets get it running on an older XG135 and compare it to a new XGS136 appliance to see how it stacks up
While not for use in production its always been a fully featured product with only a Core and memory limit which generally don't impact its use for most home lab environments, and as far as I'm aware its the only 100% free NGFW available
So join me in loading it up and getting full TLS inspection working to see the impact this has on performance

    With this type of form factor, any HDD would add additional heat into the entire enclosure. The SD card that got "eaten" may not be able to handle the continuous heat soak. Try getting a micro SD card from a brand like SanDisk that caters to in-car DVR recording. That is able to handle higher temps like on a sun soaked car windscreen, etc and would last longer.

    Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I am from Chile and in the process of setting up a WiFi network using Starlink and need to distribute the internet signal through 13 Ubiquiti U6+ Access Points. I recently purchased a USW-Pro-24-POE (400W) switch, which appears suitable for effectively unifying the network. Could you please advise on what other Ubiquiti equipment is the most economical yet effective to ensure the unification of all Access Points into a cohesive network that operates optimally? Thank you very much for your assistance, and I look forward to your guidance. Best regards Pablo Araya

    Nobody has posted a video of one of these flush mounted into a wall. I think because it makes no sense. Where would the box go? In the wall? Cut a hole to get to it? Sort of defeats all arguments of "small hole" and "discrete".

    Great video. I am thinking to run Sophos Home Edition. Currently evaluating the XG 135 vs Protectli hardware. I understand the Home edition limitation of the 4x Core and 6GB Ram. My thinking is while you may not be able to get around the RAM limitation, you may be able to to benefit from the CPU with a more powerful 4 core. Would like to hear any thoughts on this...

    Just bought two used xg135's off ebay. Was able to boot first with Ubuntu thumb drive, and I used the disk tools to delete the partitions, then used same tool to create a new blank partition, overwriting all data with zeros as the option. Quit Ubuntu and inserted by Rufus-made dd image that I downloaded from Sophos. Immediately recognized the hardware as compatible with the Home software and asked if I wanted to install. The first couple times that I responded 'y' didn't work and it kept rebooting. Then I realized when I typed 'y', it added about five characters in front of the 'y', so I just backspaced them out, and viola, everything installed like magic. Getting the interfaces to work was a bit more challenging as I was configuring this thing on my regular network which has to go through the old Sophos UTM, honestly why interface 1 is 5 and 2 is 6 is beyond me. Something to do with the Home version because when I got the xg135's I tried them out as they already were with the paid basic license, and the port1 Lan and port2 WAN worked perfectly. Also no problem using a logitec wireless mouse/keyboard combo and the video port to do all the setting up. Just make sure the reconfigure your computer on 172.16.16.xx network. Thanks JimtheITguy.

    HI Jim, thanks for the clear explanation; in my case I am replacing the ISP modem/router with an UXG-Pro but still have to keep the modem/router in pppoe passthrough mode (acting now as just a modem). When I plug the (non-adopted) UXG-pro into the ISP modem's WAN port (with just my laptop in the LAN port) I am able to connect the UXG to the Internet but then (after my successful unifi acct login) it starts searching for a cloud key, so I then plug the LAN port into the main switch where the Cloud Key gen2 lives. At that stage the UXG reports that its LAN port is disabled. I've tried that several times with the same result. Could I be some kind of loop protection? Any other idea?

    • @JimtheITguy
      @JimtheITguy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds a bit odd, have you tried adopting it first with all the correct settings and then swapping the internet connection over, is your ISP router handing out the same IP range that your LAN is using? Feel free to come over to the discord and ask away
