People talking about their money, but I'm just glad to see how humble they are, the fact they still have family values, that they want to be connected to the wilderness, and that they more or less tried to make it as sustainable as they can.
@RARAYAYA RAA "Being off the grid is about being self sufficient" - whoever said that? While I don't have his apparent money, what is wrong with having a skill that you can then market in exchange for cash, and then use that cash to pay for labor to help you live with the aid of solar panels and hydro power? There are all forms of off-grid. This set-up seems nice. Though the boat travel and yurt are very inefficient.
For sure this cost a fortune but you can live off-grid for way way less. I have a starter off grid Homestead that cost $25k and in some places you could do it for less. Then build it up as you get more money. I started with some land- 6 Acres (20k), a trailer (3k), generator/solar(2k). I have added a 8x12 storage shed (1k) now. You can do it for almost whatever budget you have. Of course the possibilities and your standard of living will vary drastically depending on your budget, local building laws and location. (You may need to move to a cheaper location if you have a limited budget). Also you have to figure out what your priorities are. Most of us probably can't afford to have everything we'd like-Access, utilities, location, view, water, farm and garden land, privacy, trees xcetera. Personally I got everything I wanted except water. And that's not a big issue for me since I've lived without running water most of my life. I just get a health club membership in town for showers.

You guys are doing the best thing for your children. Anyone telling you otherwise doesn’t know the meaning of life being surrounded by nature ...yet having modern amenities.
I've read various posts about their hypothesized wealth to get where they live. Obviously, it took some serious money to do what they did but what we should focus on is the fact that with their capital, they decided to prioritize living where they do, trying to minimize impact on the planet, searching for a "clean" lifestyle and raising your kids on something more than wanting the next video game or other materialistic item. I live in a wealthy area of Houston and see numerous very wealthy people looking for that next sense of gratification, buying that new Ferrari and when that doesn't bring the satisfaction they thought it would, step up to a Rolls and yes, we have 2 Rolls dealers nearby or adding on to their already massive mansion. Seriously, do 2 people need a 14,000 square foot home..... I tip my hat that yes, it took money to build their dream but more on point, they chased a sustainable lifestyle and raising kids in an environment most of us would like to participate in. The build process to pull this off requires intelligence and lots of coordination as well as drive. As for me, irregardless of the money, you have my upmost respect for what you have accomplished!
Sorry Michel, but using boats daily, barges to bring materials, clearing the land all that land, installing a septic system.........none of this is “clean” living. Let’s be real! This is just remote living and is not self sustaining. They still grocery shop and work in the city. Their carbon footprint is a crater
@@kristinatorrey1373 I acknowledge your point but regardless of where you build, they're most likely going to have to clear the land for your lot, clear the land to get water, sewer, cable, gas and electrical lines to your lot. Everything to build your home will be trucked in as well. Most city homes do not have solar and are usually poorly insulated. As for grocery shopping, you're either going to drive a probable gas engine vehicle that has at least 150 hp motor, burning up tires, oil and gasoline versus a 70 hp engine on a boat. I'm not an expert but I would think the boat overall would be more environmental friendly than most cars.
I know it makes u wonder who the sane ones are - us, living in so-called civilisation, or them not being worried by covid or any other bugs for that matter.

The title of the video is "Living-off grid," not "living off-grid in poverty." I agree this is the "Rich" addition but the commitment to sustainable and renewable sources, and to the environment, are still there (hydropower, composting, solar). It seems they could of bought any home with all the modern utilities without any of the hassles of being off grid living. With that said, take a look at 5:13, how the heck did they get that excavator there with no roads. If by barge, that alone is $10k, not to mention $400 a day in rental for the excavator. Also, their site has been cut into multiple elevations (2:22)) using large multi-ton stones as retaining wall, with stones needing to also be brought in. Wow, their excavation package (ie, moving dirt around + stone) must of been at least $150k by itself, if not more. This is in addition to the cost of the property. Oh, forgot, that steel bridge out to the their wood pier that has two piles anchored to the bottom, that takes a drill rig, thats bookoo bucks. Ya, they aren't ruffing it.
Rayder - They are not mutually exclusive. Having privilege is not necessarily a bad thing, but it must be recognized. As a straight white male, my life is full of privilege. This channel is called exploring alternatives not homes that everyone can afford. It’s a beautiful life they build for themselves and amazing thing to aspire to. Thank you for educating us on what’s possible ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you. Like noone cares that you can't afford it. Obviously this is very expensive. I wish people would just appreciate the beauty and not show so much jealousy.
Agreed! Not everyone have the same means. You live accordingly to what you can afford, that’s life
True, but there is nothing alternative about this. Its just having enough money to do whatever the fuck you want. The only education here is this, if you have enough money you can do anything, or pay someone else to do it for you. Good on them, their money, their thing. But lets not pretend as this some sort of alternative living.
@@Qlicky do you know what the word "alternative" means?
Phoenix Wiseman sure, but anything is possible with money. Go look at land for sale in British Columbia like l did and real estate agents will tell ya how much it will cost to bring river water right to your home and install a compliant septic system when your house is right by the water. This is beautiful and everyone's dream, but it isn't feasible for the average person. You would have to be wealthy to have a set up like this and to live this way. It is great and I'm glad they can enjoy it, however, it only goes to show that everything, even living alternatively, requires money.
@MrBadabimBadabum .. Perfect post. Begin at the beginning.
@MrBadabimBadabum I understand you start where you are, but to even buy this kind of property would cost more than most people have. I'm saying this isn't living off grid for the average person. This is an extreme example of what you can do with money. You can have an off grid place and live alternatively, but to live in the style of this family would take more money than most are able to afford.

"Satellite phone ,satellite wifi"...ill stop you right there
I've read various posts about their hypothesized wealth to get where they live.
Thanks so much Michel!!

I agree this is the "Rich" addition but the commitment to sustainable and renewable sources, and to the environment, are still there (hydropower, composting, solar).
Why does everyone keep hating on them ,good for them
This setting is similar to the setting of the book, The Great Alone. This is such a great but privileged lifestyle.
Drew Fridley It’s just a lifestyle guy, stop with the privileged stuff.
Rayder - They are not mutually exclusive. Having privilege is not necessarily a bad thing, but it must be recognized. As a straight white male, my life is full of privilege. I do not have guilt about this, but I acknowledge it and try to live with gratitude and empathy for those whom may not be as privileged as I am.
definitely limited to the ULTRA RICH. Thanks for being honest.
