I currently live in the “chocolate house” and it’s been such an enjoyable time living here over this past year. I’m a senior at Appalachian State and I’m humbled to be able to have this experience for my last year living in Boone. It has truly changed my whole perspective on what a “home” is and what that looks like. I love the intentionality and presence that this place has brung to my life.

I graduated from Appalachian State in 2021 and had Cameron as one of my professors! I was fortunate enough to work with him on this project and do some of the construction on the property. The life lessons and advice he gave was incredible. What he's doing here has a huge impact around the world and I'm happy I could experience some of it!
Believe me you are not changing anything around the world. People have survived and are surviving with much less. It is you humans in the USA that waste their life buying junk.
How ironic is it that the people who are interested in living sustainably, and lightly off the land, are confronted with legislation that doesn't allow them to legally build permanent small structures! This is an upside down world. And it's time for a revolution where sustainability is what is legislated. I fortunately found a small piece of land with a cabin, outhouse, no running water, but it is tied to the electricity grid. (I live in Canada. 🇨🇦). I love the lifestyle, even as a senior. The work of "chop wood, carry water" is healthy and keeps me strong and connected to what is important. I live right alongside a very long trail that is lovely to walk with my dog in winter. I love the community this couple have created, and how it has inspired the students. I have been on my property for less than a year and am trying to figure out things going forward, and I have learned much from what this couple has created. Amazing, you are an inspiration! "chop wood, carry water" has been a tough one for me after awakening... the type of road blocks I have encountered, like the insane legislation you mentioned, how difficult it is to get off grid if you don't have the money to buy land, etc. have been daunting. How to still live purposefully if you are temporarily in a place that drains your energy?
@@Quantum36911 Definitely not simple or easy. You have to find something to feed your soul in each day, so you can hold onto your dreams. It took me a long time to get to a place where I am so content - and yet a lot of people would look at my "chop wood, carry water, use the outhouse" and think it is a poor life! The biggest learning is to spend less than you earn - not easy if you rent. And when we are unfulfilled we justify spending money on things we don't need. "Comfort stuff." I had to move more and more rurally to find anything affordable. It's also good to disconnect from TV and too much social media. I find that sucks away your time and energy. Just know that if it's really what your soul wants, you'll get there. Keep holding the vision!

The "classroom" they created has a natural and realistic feel. Even down to the electric trike he rides, the lifestyle isn't corny or forced. Natural cool 😊
This makes so much sense! I have seen famous people bragging about their 4000 square foot closets, and it just didn't feel right. As the world spins out of control, this lifestyle just seems right.
Chase bureaucrats and you will have houses available wherever you look. For now, you are asking bureaucrats for permission to fart on their allegedly own grounds.
What do you think is the average year they will live there? 99% will move on. if lifestyle was good to them, they still need make money, and also then they will have their own place, and not this over hyped dream of finding your soul.

I just adored this video! I love how they are living their values, while utilizing all their talents and interests, and teaching and helping young people at the same time! The young people are in turn learning new skills, developing their values, and saving money too. I loved how that young man was using such a cool old sewing machine, how the other one practiced his musical talents, and the young lady built swings with her mentor. This video can teach us all what is really important in life and how you can imagine new ways of living that cut out all the excesses our culture is so focussed on. Many Blessings to you all. 💗🙏🏻👼🏻💗
I like the message that this isnt THE solution for housing, its one solution. People often seem to be looking for the best or only solution, or their "forever " home, when different housing will usually be required for the many stages of life. I think this shows how several people can work together to experiment, while maintaining a "mainstream" life, there are so many alternatives (yes, this fits your brand perfectly!!). Great video. Also gave me some ideas for combined rainwater/sun shade at our place 🤸♀️
What I am trying to understand is - sure it's sustainable now, when you have two students living that way, but soon, everyone will want their tiny house - they are all using wood for heating/cooking/building...What if you had 50K, 100K people (or more) wanting to live this way and use wood? Wasn't forest preservation one of the reasons we had to switch to other energy sources? How is this exactly "sustainable" as a "new way" of living on a larger scale? Not trying to knock it down, just trying to understand what's new under the sun.
@@MusgraveRitual Using wood is sustainable. Millions of acres of forest land are owned in the southeast by timber companies and paper companies. You cut timber and you replace it by planting new trees. It’s very green and very sustainable but you are putting carbon back into the atmosphere when you burn wood but the only alternative is using propane for heat or having a massive solar system which is incredibly expensive to create heat in any other way. There are some ways to use sun for heat such as the earth ship type houses but you have to have the right property and be in the right part of the country. These things are not as simple as the far left environmentalist would like you to think. But world population is going to peak in the near future and start declining and man’s impact on earth will decline with it. Also as technology and innovation take us into the future some of these issues will be solved that way. But the reality is the trend over the last 50 years of more and more people living in huge metropolitan areas is an even greater impact on the environment. Not less like a lot of people think.
@@MusgraveRitual not sure if there is one right answer, I just like that they are experimenting. It's not new, this happens every generation, but it's great that we can see into people's lives and pick options that we can incorporate. We are no longer working, are travelling around in a caravan and have built a cabin on family land, so what I see as a sustainable option for living won't be available to everyone.
@@MusgraveRitual I think your post is a legitimate one. You can't scale this out very far without running in to sustainability issues. There are ideas within this model that, if codes can be altered, that tiny houses within mixed neighborhoods or even suburban neighborhoods can be an economical alternative to the expense of housing these days.
I've been living off grid for over 11 years now. It's amazing how we as humans revert or convert back to naturally systematic methods in order to survive. One must always consider and remember that when addressing survival concerns, nature always has a cure for it's own creations - some of them being considered tragedies or threats to ways of natural existence or life. Nature will always find it's own solutions to remedy existential life... It's a lot of work. At times I've honestly wanted to just give up as it seems life or survival is more work than the reward... A struggle i often debate and try to weigh in some form of equation i haven't truly written out, understood or conquered on many levels. I'd love to create or join an off grid community and apply my knowledge towards the further survival of like minded individuals. I definately believe community is necessary to excel in such a lifestyle - finding individual niches and skills for every individual of the community to contribute to the overall society - extending and improving life on an individual and societal level. We all have interests hobbies and skills that in today's modern society we aren't able to express - suck in a system of involuntary servitude or downright slavery. Governments have veered far of track in so many aspects, that ultimately they represent harm to individuals natural way of life and coexistence on planet earth. Just do it. You'll fail. But you'll learn. You'll grow. It's a hard type of lifestyle but it's so rewarding also. I'm 50. If I can do van life and live in a tiny home...so can you. My body struggles at times but you'll learn that you're stronger than you think you are.

The design of the structures are so aesthetically pleasing. I can imagine how good it feels to live in a minimal and functional and beautiful space with the natural atmosphere. Not easy but so satisfying.
I couldn't love this any more..for those that love living as close to nature as we can, this is the dream. A fine balance of ease and effort, both physically and mentally.

At 57 years old I became homeless and now it's 63 years old I found that I can live in a little fifth wheel with electricity and that's it everything else I provide myself or take care of a clean and cheap way to live and I see no reason to ever change I refuse to be trapped and now I consume way less resources I ride a bike most of the time nature calls to me and when I'm not working I'm on the rivers and trails
Lovely model, but sadly illegal to live this way in most States anymore. Becoming less and less viable an option as laws change. I hope these people having the opportunity to experience this go back into their communities and work to change these trends, working to make this a possibility for more people in the future.
Yeah, it's pretty incredible. You can build a 20,000 square foot house, but you aren't allowed to have a tiny house and be off-grid which is obviously so much better for the environment. I'm hoping for this to change eventually, but in the meantime those with enough land may be able to get away with it without getting caught.
Yes, it's ironic that so many governments talk about trying to solve the housing affordability crisis, yet they outlaw a very practical solution that would help so many people
This is why it is so important to get involved, share information with your municipal leaders, educate and work to recruit and elect people who are truly interested in helping to make these solutions available. Many cities are beginning to allow accessory dwelling units in single family neighborhoods, for example, and some are implementing TH's for homeless or veterans transitional housing programs. The more they learn, the more likely they will open to the idea of TH communities like those in Waldport OR, Newport TN, Durango CO, or Lake Dallas TX, for example.
This brought me to tears. Off grid living is amazing. Unfortunately it's only just becoming a thing in germany and the people that have started living their life this way unsually have to invest a lot of money first. If I ever end up buying a plot I'll try my best to make this work. Until then I'll start with small things. Balcony garden, saving and collecting water, keeping heating to a minimum, rethinking what I need electricity for, etc. Such an inspiring video. Thank you for sharing :)

I was almost in tears. I'm so fed up with the work more to buy more culture. I have been happier in a camper than a 5800 house on a golf course. I want all the way out of the matrix

As someone who grew up on a sailboat, part of that cruising in Mexico... Let me offer a thought about washing (dishes, people, etc) the rainwater you collect is much cleaner (will leave less residue) tgan the salt water we used, but let's look at it as 'similar' in nature... We found that all washing and first rinse could be done in salt water, but we were told by cruisers who did not do a 2nd rinse in potable water that the residue eventually developed an odor and taste... In the case of daily personal hygiene, warm salt water to bathe/rinse was fine, but again a potable-water rinse (a cup or so of warm water poured over the head into a basin, then wetting a facetowel with that to sponge the rest of the body was excellent and kept us to our limit of 48oz of fresh water/person/day... Clothes washing in rain water probably does not need a 2nd rinse, but if the pH of your rainwater shows it to be either acidic or too basic - one will deteriorate natural fibers, the other will eventually develop an odor ... Just some thots

Lovely, and gentle living. Nature is my sweet spot. I've had the privilege of visiting both coast of Costa Rica. The Osa Peninsula, and Manzanillo are stunning. The palapas were simple, and beautiful. Both with outdoor showers, and kitchens. What a treat to have humming birds fly around my head, and face while cooking. "Threat of freezing". Necessity is the mother of all inventions.
I wondered where all the hippies/alt lifestyle folks ended up. Even though I pursued a different venue, I never diminished or demeaned other paths. What you are doing in & for the environment and the youth (our future) is admired greatly by this crusty old retired combat arms soldier. I can only hope that what you have done for 30 years does more for humanity than my 30 years.
This place is amazing, Im a student myself for electricity and musician but my living situation is not well at all, your video inspired me alot. If theirs more space I would love to consider this lifestyle. My grandpa and grandma lived like this and i'd love to feel the roots again, Building your own and find a freedom

These people are the perfect representation of housing considerations for a ver close futur. They include students who share their target and they share a strong knowledge of possible alternatives, not only fir housing, but also for a simplistic way of living. Of course rough winter like we have in Canada might bring harder work and a lot more challenges. I figure it is The solution for a very interesting way of life married with nature. What i love most about this is the fact these two not only wanted to build this life for themself, but provide equity to the students they share a community with to have a chance of being able to possibly explore this lifestyle. One thing about the off grid or tiny home movement that i have taken issue with has been that a large portion of it are people who have the equity in one way or another to pursue this lifestyle, or have already been integrated into these communities. So many people, myself included, do not have that. That kind of equity could be a beneficial job or skill already possessed, family/friends with tradeskills or access to resources, family with land, financial ability, good credit scores, etc. after over a decade of trying to get out of poverty ive managed to move to an area where i finally have the resources to help me achieve this, and only succeeded because someone chose to help me. These two understand the meaning of community and mentorship. Thank you for what you do! I think any of us who are interested in these alternative lifestyles really have to ensure that we remind ourselves of the reason we pursued it and ensure we can provide an easier path and mentorship to those who follow in our footsteps.

Super interesting couple. I liked their honesty and candor about this lifestyle. They didn't try to romanticize it. They spoke of the challenges as well as the benefits as they see them. I also appreciated when they said that they don't have it figured out. That they are simply experimenting as they go and seeing where their choices take them. Very refreshing.

That was so interesting, I could have watched an hour+ video of this couple's great project, and their philosophies on how they will continue and evolve. Especially considering how much the world has changed in the past 2+ years. Perhaps you can piece together some extra footage for a longer version? I just think there are a lot of us who are trying to glean ideas and inspiration about how to best insulate ourselves from the harsher impacts of rising costs, lower incomes, and growing uncertainty about the local and global economies, about governance, grid reliance, extreme weather, increasing food insecurity, supply chain disruptions, etc. All those things that we had grown up thinking had been pretty much figured out, and the infrastructures established to allow people to access basic needs and to primarily focus on their work [which in N. America has become steadily more demanding of our time and attention], and their families, and oh -- perhaps have some joy along the way. 🤨 It seems it's all been tilted on its axis, and it's hard to know what calamity, or war, or natural disaster, or authoritarian/totalitarian government policy change will be coming next to interfere or impede the normal course of our lives. There is much to consider in learning how to be prepared for resilience and rapid adaptation. Keep up the great work, you two [Mat & Danielle]! 👍🙏☮

This truly warms my heart. I hope that more people will see this and be inspired to live on this planet in a sustainable way. For far too long our society has embraced a more, more, more, mentality. Bigger housing, more stuff, bigger vehicles, consume, consume, consume. It's not only unsustainable, but also emotionally unhealthy and of course environmentally damaging.
Nice video. I built an earthship and have some pointers for you. I didn’t see a water treatment system for the rain water. Check out the systems used with earthships. Collected rain water can have contamination from bird droppings, rodent droppings etc. Stuff left on the roof etc. before the rain. Rocket stoves use 75% less wood as do also rocket mass heaters. 75% less! Build them out of heavy metal (1/4” or thicker). The ones made out of metal barrels don’t last very long so they aren’t safe. The key design factor is to keep the air volume the same through out (inlet, stove chambers an outlet all the same sq inches not the same cubic inches but the space the air travels thru has the same sq inches. For example, a 3 and 9/16”square inlet would be the same as a 6” ID diameter pipe outlet. If you run your rocket mass heater exhaust pipe thru some masonry (a masonry bench or bed etc.) for up to twelve feet, you capture even more heat before you exhaust up the chimney. Have a bypass so in the summer it doesn’t go thru the masonry mass. Masonry (brick, Adobe, rocks etc) absorbs heat very slowly and then releases it over hours of time. Your corn needs more nitrogen and you get better pollination (more kernels per ear) if planted in three or more rows closely together. I would never build an earthship again though as they take two to three times more labor than conventional const. Your designs seem much easier. However, earthships do keep you warm. We heat ours (1200 sq ft) with a small electric space heater plus one in the bedroom and we live in a zone 5. At 5,000 ft elevation. Take care
Earthship construction would be problematic since it's permanent and not a temporary structure. The restrictions and code in Boone is pretty typical, i.e. restrictive.
So inspiring. This is what I’d like to do in my retirement…live off grid, grow food, and be outside every day. If I could also inspire and learn with young people as this couple has, it would be the icing on my retirement dream. 💜
We are also off-grid. Switch to a tankless hot water heater using propane. You need more water collection. We currently have 6,000 gallons of storage plus a pond. We need it because we have 10 hogs, 12 goats, 7 rabbits, 7 turkeys, 7 ducks and 21 chickens. We are just north of you in Virginia.
Im a senior, a very cool senior, looking for a situation like this. I've lived similiary in the Rockies at elevation, and crave it again. What a fascinating project. This lifestyle Creates gratitude because everything you do contributes to surviving and makes you appreciate everything.

What an inspiring community! So many valuable concepts are being brought to life here. I have been disappointed with the heavy commercialization and price tags that have evolved in the "Tiny House Movement" and felt that profiteers have infected it into a direction that is not what was intended. This is back to the core intentions of an off the grid, sustainable lifestyle. Thank you for sharing this with us!
This is so inspiring!!! I walked the Appalachian Trail back in 2008 and actually stayed the night in Boon. I wish I'd known such a place was so close (if indeed it was there back then). I would definitely have gone to visit the place!

@@Quantum36911 Definitely not simple or easy. You have to find something to feed your soul in each day, so you can hold onto your dreams. It took me a long time to get to a place where I am so content - and yet a lot of people would look at my "chop wood, carry water, use the outhouse" and think it is a poor life! The biggest learning is to spend less than you earn - not easy if you rent. And when we are unfulfilled we justify spending money on things we don't need. "Comfort stuff." I had to move more and more rurally to find anything affordable. It's also good to disconnect from TV and too much social media. I find that sucks away your time and energy. Just know that if it's really what your soul wants, you'll get there. Keep holding the vision!

I just adored this video! I love how they are living their values, while utilizing all their talents and interests, and teaching and helping young people at the same time! The young people are in turn learning new skills, developing their values, and saving money too. I loved how that young man was using such a cool old sewing machine, how the other one practiced his musical talents, and the young lady built swings with her mentor. I like the message that this isnt THE solution for housing, its one solution. People often seem to be looking for the best or only solution, or their "forever " home, when different housing will usually be required for the many stages of life. I think this shows how several people can work together to experiment, while maintaining a "mainstream" life, there are so many alternatives (yes, this fits your brand perfectly!!). Great video. Also gave me some ideas for combined rainwater/sun shade at our place 🤸♀️
What I am trying to understand is - sure it's sustainable now, when you have two students living that way, but soon, everyone will want their tiny house - they are all using wood for heating/cooking/building...What if you had 50K, 100K people (or more) wanting to live this way and use wood? Wasn't forest preservation one of the reasons we had to switch to other energy sources? How is this exactly "sustainable" as a "new way" of living on a larger scale? Not trying to knock it down, just trying to understand what's new under the sun.

Using wood is sustainable. Millions of acres of forest land are owned in the southeast by timber companies and paper companies. You cut timber and you replace it by planting new trees. It’s very green and very sustainable but you are putting carbon back into the atmosphere when you burn wood but the only alternative is using propane for heat or having a massive solar system which is incredibly expensive to create heat in any other way. There are some ways to use sun for heat such as the earth ship type houses but you have to have the right property and be in the right part of the country. These things are not as simple as the far left environmentalist would like you to think. But world population is going to peak in the near future and start declining and man’s impact on earth will decline with it. Also as technology and innovation take us into the future some of these issues will be solved that way. But the reality is the trend over the last 50 years of more and more people living in huge metropolitan areas is an even greater impact on the environment. Not less like a lot of people think.
@@MusgraveRitual not sure if there is one right answer, I just like that they are experimenting. It's not new, this happens every generation, but it's great that we can see into people's lives and pick options that we can incorporate.
We are no longer working, are travelling around in a caravan and have built a cabin on family land, so what I see as a sustainable option for living won't be available to everyone.
@@MusgraveRitual I think your post is a legitimate one. You can't scale this out very far without running in to sustainability issues. There are ideas within this model that, if codes can be altered, that tiny houses within mixed neighborhoods or even suburban neighborhoods can be an economical alternative to the expense of housing these days.
I've been living off grid for over 11 years now. It's amazing how we as humans revert or convert back to naturally systematic methods in order to survive. One must always consider and remember that when addressing survival concerns, nature always has a cure for it's own creations - some of them being considered tragedies or threats to ways of natural existence or life. Nature will always find it's own solutions to remedy existential life... It's a lot of work. At times I've honestly wanted to just give up as it seems life or survival is more work than the reward... A struggle i often debate and try to weigh in some form of equation i haven't truly written out, understood or conquered on many levels. I'd love to create or join an off grid community and apply my knowledge towards the further survival of like minded individuals. I definately believe community is necessary to excel in such a lifestyle - finding individual niches and skills for every individual of the community to contribute to the overall society - extending and improving life on an individual and societal level. We all have interests hobbies and skills that in today's modern society we aren't able to express - suck in a system of involuntary servitude or downright slavery. Governments have veered far of track in so many aspects, that ultimately they represent harm to individuals natural way of life and coexistence on planet earth. If not gated borders they have entrapped us as individuals mentally inhibiting creativity, sustainability, and reward. Good luck and keep up the wonderful genital ideals - much love

Just do it. You'll fail. But you'll learn. You'll grow. It's a hard type of lifestyle but it's so rewarding also. I'm 50. If I can do van life and live in a tiny home...so can you. My body struggles at times but you'll learn that you're stronger than you think you are.

The design of the structures are so aesthetically pleasing. I can imagine how good it feels to live in a minimal and functional and beautiful space with the natural atmosphere. Not easy but so satisfying.

At 57 years old I became homeless and now it's 63 years old I found that I can live in a little fifth wheel with electricity and that's it everything else I provide myself or take care of a clean and cheap way to live and I see no reason to ever change I refuse to be trapped and now I consume way less resources I ride a bike most of the time nature calls to me and when I'm not working I'm on the rivers and trails

Lovely model, but sadly illegal to live this way in most States anymore. Becoming less and less viable an option as laws change. I hope these people having the opportunity to experience this go back into their communities and work to change these trends, working to make this a possibility for more people in the future.
Yeah, it's pretty incredible. You can build a 20,000 square foot house, but you aren't allowed to have a tiny house and be off-grid which is obviously so much better for the environment. I'm hoping for this to change eventually, but in the meantime those with enough land may be able to get away with it without getting caught.

This is why it is so important to get involved, share information with your municipal leaders, educate and work to recruit and elect people who are truly interested in helping to make these solutions available. Many cities are beginning to allow accessory dwelling units in single family neighborhoods, for example, and some are implementing TH's for homeless or veterans transitional housing programs. The more they learn, the more likely they will open to the idea of TH communities like those in Waldport OR, Newport TN, Durango CO, or Lake Dallas TX, for example.

This brought me to tears. Off grid living is amazing. Unfortunately it's only just becoming a thing in germany and the people that have started living their life this way unsually have to invest a lot of money first. If I ever end up buying a plot I'll try my best to make this work.
Until then I'll start with small things. Balcony garden, saving and collecting water, keeping heating to a minimum, rethinking what I need electricity for, etc.

As someone who grew up on a sailboat, part of that cruising in Mexico... Let me offer a thought about washing (dishes, people, etc) the rainwater you collect is much cleaner (will leave less residue) tgan the salt water we used, but let's look at it as 'similar' in nature... We found that all washing and first rinse could be done in salt water, but we were told by cruisers who did not do a 2nd rinse in potable water that the residue eventually developed an odor and taste... In the case of daily personal hygiene, warm salt water to bathe/rinse was fine, but again a potable-water rinse (a cup or so of warm water poured over the head into a basin, then wetting a facetowel with that to sponge the rest of the body was excellent and kept us to our limit of 48oz of fresh water/person/day... Clothes washing in rain water probably does not need a 2nd rinse, but if the pH of your rainwater shows it to be either acidic or too basic - one will deteriorate natural fibers, the other will eventually develop an odor

Lovely, and gentle living. Nature is my sweet spot. I've had the privilege of visiting both coast of Costa Rica. The Osa Peninsula, and Manzanillo are stunning. The palapas were simple, and beautiful. Both with outdoor showers, and kitchens. What a treat to have humming birds fly around my head, and face while cooking. "Threat of freezing". Necessity is the mother of all inventions.
I wondered where all the hippies/alt lifestyle folks ended up. Even though I pursued a different venue, I never diminished or demeaned other paths. What you are doing in & for the environment and the youth (our future) is admired greatly by this crusty old retired combat arms soldier. I can only hope that what you have done for 30 years does more for humanity than my 30 years.
This place is amazing, Im a student myself for electricity and musician but my living situation is not well at all, your video inspired me alot. If theirs more space I would love to consider this lifestyle. My grandpa and grandma lived like this and i'd love to feel the roots again, Building your own and find a freedom

These people are the perfect representation of housing considerations for a ver close futur. They include students who share their target and they share a strong knowledge of possible alternatives, not only fir housing, but also for a simplistic way of living. Of course rough winter like we have in Canada might bring harder work and a lot more challenges. I figure it is The solution for a very interesting way of life married with nature.

So good to see that two people found each other - one in a Million.
What i love most about this is the fact these two not only wanted to build this life for themself, but provide equity to the students they share a community with to have a chance of being able to possibly explore this lifestyle. One thing about the off grid or tiny home movement that i have taken issue with has been that a large portion of it are people who have the equity in one way or another to pursue this lifestyle, or have already been integrated into these communities. So many people, myself included, do not have that. That kind of equity could be a beneficial job or skill already possessed, family/friends with tradeskills or access to resources, family with land, financial ability, good credit scores, etc. after over a decade of trying to get out of poverty ive managed to move to an area where i finally have the resources to help me achieve this, and only succeeded because someone chose to help me.
These two understand the meaning of community and mentorship. Thank you for what you do!
I think any of us who are interested in these alternative lifestyles really have to ensure that we remind ourselves of the reason we pursued it and ensure we can provide an easier path and mentorship to those who follow in our footsteps.

Super interesting couple. I liked their honesty and candor about this lifestyle. They didn't try to romanticize it. They spoke of the challenges as well as the benefits as they see them. I also appreciated when they said that they don't have it figured out. That they are simply experimenting as they go and seeing where their choices take them. Very refreshing.

The more I watch and witness people that enjoy the quietness, the more I feel at ease for myself wanting that space. Been setting up my home in a similar manner. We collect our water and are on solar and grow our own veggies. No meat harvesting…… YET. 😉😉😉 These videos are so relaxing and beautiful.

That was so interesting, I could have watched an hour+ video of this couple's great project, and their philosophies on how they will continue and evolve. Especially considering how much the world has changed in the past 2+ years. Perhaps you can piece together some extra footage for a longer version?
I just think there are a lot of us who are trying to glean ideas and inspiration about how to best insulate ourselves from the harsher impacts of rising costs, lower incomes, and growing uncertainty about the local and global economies, about governance, grid reliance, extreme weather, increasing food insecurity, supply chain disruptions, etc. All those things that we had grown up thinking had been pretty much figured out, and the infrastructures established to allow people to access basic needs and to primarily focus on their work [which in N. America has become steadily more demanding of our time and attention], and their families, and oh -- perhaps have some joy along the way. 🤨
It seems it's all been tilted on its axis, and it's hard to know what calamity, or war, or natural disaster, or authoritarian/totalitarian government policy change will be coming next to interfere or impede the normal course of our lives. There is much to consider in learning how to be prepared for resilience and rapid adaptation. Keep up the great work, you two [Mat & Danielle]! 👍🙏☮

This truly warms my heart. I hope that more people will see this and be inspired to live on this planet in a sustainable way. For far too long our society has embraced a more, more, more, mentality. Bigger housing, more stuff, bigger vehicles, consume, consume, consume. It's not only unsustainable, but also emotionally unhealthy and of course environmentally damaging.

Nice video. I built an earthship and have some pointers for you. I didn’t see a water treatment system for the rain water. Check out the systems used with earthships. Collected rain water can have contamination from bird droppings, rodent droppings etc. Stuff left on the roof etc. before the rain. Rocket stoves use 75% less wood as do also rocket mass heaters. 75% less! Build them out of heavy metal (1/4” or thicker). The ones made out of metal barrels don’t last very long so they aren’t safe. The key design factor is to keep the air volume the same through out (inlet, stove chambers an outlet all the same sq inches not the same cubic inches but the space the air travels thru has the same sq inches. For example, a 3 and 9/16”square inlet would be the same as a 6” ID diameter pipe outlet. If you run your rocket mass heater exhaust pipe thru some masonry (a masonry bench or bed etc.) for up to twelve feet, you capture even more heat before you exhaust up the chimney. Have a bypass so in the summer it doesn’t go thru the masonry mass. Masonry (brick, Adobe, rocks etc) absorbs heat very slowly and then releases it over hours of time. Your corn needs more nitrogen and you get better pollination (more kernels per ear) if planted in three or more rows closely together. I would never build an earthship again though as they take two to three times more labor than conventional const. Your designs seem much easier. However, earthships do keep you warm. We heat ours (1200 sq ft) with a small electric space heater plus one in the bedroom and we live in a zone 5. At 5,000 ft elevation. Take care
Earthship construction would be problematic since it's permanent and not a temporary structure. The restrictions and code in Boone is pretty typical, i.e. restrictive.
Getting back to nature and embracing community is a lifestyle that I wish everyone had the chance to experience.

We are also off-grid. Switch to a tankless hot water heater using propane. You need more water collection. We currently have 6,000 gallons of storage plus a pond. We need it because we have 10 hogs, 12 goats, 7 rabbits, 7 turkeys, 7 ducks and 21 chickens.

I have been disappointed with the heavy commercialization and price tags that have evolved in the "Tiny House Movement" and felt that profiteers have infected it into a direction that is not what was intended.
