Vitamin B2 deficiency, also known as riboflavin deficiency, can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
Skin issues: Dry, cracked, or swollen lips, or lesions at the corners of the mouth
Eye issues: Itchy, red eyes, or blurred vision
Digestive issues: Digestive problems or recurrent diarrhea
Other symptoms: Fatigue, sore throat, swollen tongue, hair loss, or reproductive issues
Riboflavin deficiency is usually reversible, unless it causes anatomical changes like cataracts. The earlier the signs and symptoms appear, the easier they are to reverse.
Some causes of riboflavin deficiency include:
Not eating enough meat, dairy, or fortified cereals
Chronic disorders like liver disorders, recurrent diarrhea, or chronic alcohol use disorder
Endocrine abnormalities like thyroid hormone insufficiency
Malabsorption disorders that impair food absorption
Groups at higher risk of riboflavin deficiency include vegans and vegetarians, and pregnant women who don't eat enough dairy or meat.
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin B2 is 1.3 milligrams per day for men and 1.1 milligrams per day for women. Pregnant women should have 1.4 milligrams per day, and breastfeeding women should have 1.6 milligrams per day.
Some foods that are good sources of vitamin B2 include:
Dairy products like milk, cottage cheese, and yogurt
Fortified oats and breakfast cereals
Egg yolks
Red meat like beef and beef liver
Salmon
Cod
Chicken
Almonds
Some grains like quinoa
