How I Learned Slide Guitar

  • The first of many longer-form videos from me! I should note that despite having the word "learned" in the past tense in the title, the learning never stops and I'll always strive to improve myself as a slide guitarist and a musician as a whole. Also sorry about the voiceover audio, made a rookie mistake in editing and had to use my phone camera's audio.
Also also the Statesboro Blues clip is in Open E, the caption somehow didn’t make it into the final video
    Timestamps:
    00:00 - Intro
    00:12 - Funky Slidin’
    00:36 - Overview
    01:24 - Beginnings
    04:57 - Digging into Derek
08:25 - Berklee, Tronzo, and Finding my Voice
    13:24 - Outro
Check out my socials where I post slide and non-slide videos alike! (But mostly slide)

David Tronzo ! Yes. Dylan I have been playing slide guitar for 50 years and have followed a path with people like Albert Ayler for his vibrato , trombone players like Albert Mangelsdorf ,lap slide players like Bob Dunn, Delta Blues players and many others . Thanks for the great video !

Dylan Adams, you and I have been down the same path to learning our craft. I met Derek Trucks when he was 19 years old, that was completely inspired by his work.
And we were all inspired by Duane Allman.
I saw Muddy Waters play slide guitar 1971, and I wanted to learn how to do it.
Thanks for the smile on my face

Exact same story here with Statesboro. I was playing online chess and looking at music recommendations when I heard their first album. I liked it enough to try another and put on the deluxe version of Fillmore East. Duane’s slide sound connected with me like nothing else ever had. You can feel his energy and his voice so clearly. You know what I mean. Then I looped Statesboro, TNM, DKMW, DSW, and Stormy Monday for about 6 months. That was May 2020 and I still listen to Fillmore east almost every day.

So happy to hear a mention of Tronzo! He's one of my heroes and when I moved to NYC in the 90s I would catch him live every chance I got! I particularly loved his 'Slow Poke' band with Kenny Wollesen, Tonny Scherr, and Michael Blake. Anyways, he isn't mentioned enough in the slide world. Also, you sound amazing!

Thanks for sharing, Dylan. I'm glad to hear David Tronzo's name - what a unique and amazing player, and it makes sense hearing you that you studied with him AFTER the immersion in Allman and Trucks. It all makes sense. You've taken all of that and blended it into something that is entirely your own, really tuneful and exciting with a lot of subtlety. Beautiful stuff!

Dear Dylan, I'm so glad to find young players like you, diggin' into this artform so soulful and skillful! One little advice from an old man on steel would be - Try to keep down distortion as much as possible, because it flattens out your expression and articulation, an even deeper feel would be the result. "Your tone" needs clarity. Forgive me that word please.

I really enjoyed hearing about your journey to date. The Duane and Derek influences are clear and I love them too. I've particularly enjoyed when you've slowed down and wandered some less commonly traveled musical paths, as Trucks often does with his unrushed intros. It's great to hear something which sets a mood and transports the listener to an unexpected place. I appreciate how you keep it interesting and engaging. Shredders are a dime a dozen, unlike great musicians who have something to say. Finally, if you could share more about your motivation for playing slide in standard tuning, besides setting you apart from the crowd, I'd love to hear about it.

Dylan, thank you for sharing. Your past is so close to mine. Bought my first electric guitar, Gretch Country Gentleman, when I was 14 from a 21 year old guy in my neighborhood. He had a Marshall and a 57 Goldtop and could play ANYTHING on slide. Duane Allman clone. Summer of 71 he took me to see ABB in Chicago to see the original ABB. Duane was incredible live. I only play in Standard so I can play other songs without transposing on the fly. Play on the ring finger with a Coricidin bottle. Used to be able to buy them in the drug store. Get them from Dunlop now. Got into a lot of great bands because I could play slide and do the Duane thing. Took jazz guitar lessons in my teens. Helped me so much. Looking forward to more videos.
