I remember CTA, and this was like around the late 90's when I saw them at a Tri-Star show. There was a misconception that they used computer technology to help determine the proper grade for a card. They gave you the results that came with each slab which came enclosed inside the sleeve. I sent several of my cards to be graded by them and got those back about a month later. I still have those in my collection to this day. CTA was around for maybe several years or so. But they got caught up in a scam from cracking out far lower graded PSA slabs and encasing them in new CTA labeled slabs with much higher grades. Not to mention a bit of trimming was involved from their own company, and their graders were piss poor at not being able to catch cards that were already altered. One positive thing---they did have nice holders though. GEM Grading company, PRO, and WCG were some other oddball ones although their slabs looked legit.
Interesting, CSG is getting a lot of love in Blowout for its crystal clear case that showcases the card and consistency in grading vs. PSA. But then they throw a 1980s computer printout label on the slab.
There was a top quality grading company in the old days called GAI. At the time, GAI and BGS were the toughest graders in the league. I sent a beautiful GAI graded vintage card to SGC for a crossover; the grade was a GAI 8.5. I set a minimum grade of "8", just to cover the bases. SGC didn't cross the grade, never met the expectations of an 8. LOTS of politics in card grading! I'm going to break it out and send it to SGC or BGS again...
I think companies like PSA, and BGS that are overloaded may not be putting as much time, and effort into grading right now as the newer companies that are more into what they are doing.
PSA has lost my business...up charging if they deem your card to be a 10 and the cards they call 10's are a joke in alot of cases. I have seen way too many insanely off-center PSA "10's" that would get an 8 on centering from any of the companies that use sub-grades...so how is it a 10 if nobody else would give it higher than a 9? They are incentivized to all a sudden say your card is a 10 and that is a problem. And what happens to PSA slabs graded prior to the change to using AI they have planned? Will they drop in value? Back to centering (which PSA basically treats like a non-factor) PSA allows 60-40 front and 75-25 back (holy off centered!) and they still will give a 10? It screws up the pop counts too when the range in "10's" is so wild as far as centering...companies who use subgrades do not have such ballooned pop counts because the subgrades help separate out good better and best...not just lumping all 9's or all 10's into one over-inflated pop count. I see collectors wising up on these aspects and bidding lower on the off center ones regardless if it has a number 10 on the label at the top...a paper label that says 10 does not fix the centering issues that card had...its still off center...a miracle was not just performed that all the sudden made it a perfect card and high-end buyers know it. And finally as mentioned it is very possible PSA slabs pre-AI switch could become damn near worthless compared to the ones done after they switch (oh snap did everyone just poop a little?). I anticipate this AI switch to come with a tightening of the centering standards to what other companies use which is 55-45 front and 60-40 back...bye-bye value on way off-centered 10's from prior to that switch. Yeah, I have been collecting for 30 years and owned a shop for several years and PSA has lost me. Buddy deals and shady grading to upcharge people are what I see, along with inconsistent grading practices. Everyone fell in love with being able to easily get that "10" from them...it's looking like it was a fantasy in some cases. I will be using CSG they have a great reputation for accuracy in comics and coins...and I believe in HGA as well, they seem to be willing to bend over backward to improve and do it based on customer feedback, not profit margins. HGA has also tapped into the pop culture aspect with the custom labels and that is huge. Happy collecting and grading everyone! Just calling out what I see.
Cheap cards valued at $10-100, I sent to CSG under their $8 bulk. Since they raised prices, I’m going back to PSA once they resume services ($20 for cards under $500). For now, I have been submitting to HGA when I get the chance. HGA has the best looking slabs IMO, so cards $500 and up I’ve been sending to them ($55 for the 10 days). They are strict with grading since they use AI/computer guided but it just makes them more credible. I have some Lebron and MJ autos coming back from HGA, plus a few high end Kobe, LBJ, Durant rookies. Would have cost me a fortune if I went with PSA.
PSA really solidified my confidence in them when they made the announcement to stop grading cards in order to catch up with their back order. It's seems that PSA may be the standard when it comes to grading. Didn't know about the BGS fake slabs. That makes me think twice when I see one. Good video man.
Why do you think PSA will catch up? They didn't close, they are only open to the wealthy. IMO PSA will NOT catch up. Will you're confidence change when you're unable to get your cards back from PSA in the fall too? The only thing that changed is the cards for PSA are still at the Sub groups waiting to submit.
Did you know tho there are thousands of psa vintage cards that are trimmed out there tho? Psa has some big flaws too. I don't think they should be number 1 after getting busted for trimming cards at least with bgs fake cases you can tell it was faked. It uou buy a trimmed graded card you have no idea cause it's already graded. And bgs has the sturdy cases honesty but to each their own I'm juzt throwing my 2 cents out there
@@ZiggyNo ofocurse psa will catch up that's why they are not accepting submissions. They will do a very slow roll out on re open with capped amount of subs I'm sure for a good while.
Honestly, I recently sent some stuff to HGA; I wanted to check them out. The reality for me, is this... IF they are no longer around in 10-20 years, I'll just pay to send to PSA(Assuming they are still around, HA) and have the item regraded/re-slabbed. I am not sending junk in for grading...

Another thing to consider alot of ppl dont is will the grading companies rep change, honestly ppl love psa, in my experience psa is the most inconsistent but since they are grandfathered in so to say & most ppl's collections have mainly psa slabs no1 thinks twice about psa grading, I challenge anybody to show me a company with more insonsistanties than psa out of the 4-5 main grading companies, u will be hard pressed to find that psa a wins the inconsistency battle but since so many collections consist of psa slabs the titan will never fall therefore psa knows this & have been lazy in there methods period
I dont get why everyone looks at psa so highly. its mind blowing to me. are people dumb? psa is the worst. ive literally seen sooooooooo many 10s that should be 8s and sooo many 8s that should be 10s ... literally flawless clean perfect cards PERFECTLY CENTERED and get an 8 meanwhile I see the same card get a 10 and its TERRRRRRRRIBLY OFF CENTERED and or has white flecks all over certain areas on the back , or even a mark on the front, or white spotted corners and im like how the hell did this get a 10 ?????? there are so many cards out there in a psa10 I would take a RAW over simply because the psa10 is so terribly disgustingly off centered and the raw is 50/50 PERFECT ALL THE WAY AROUND ..clean front, clean back ...

I thought HGA would fail, but the market is starving for a service and they are actually holding value. If you are active in the hobby you can make money on grading and selling regardless of the slab. Where are we in 5 / 10 / 20 years is holding a protected card with the opinion of a 3rd party. If the grader is bust, cross it over with the current leader. The value in time should be the card more than grade. I think you are acting like the cards would be worthless if graded by a failed grader. Not true. FYI... it was only a few years ago BGS dominated modern grading. Lack of execution and the rise of value in Gem Mint helped PSA take leadership. (Side note: PSA's lack of 9.5 is why they are dominating today.) If I was another grader, I would SUE ebay if they blocked them from the market. There is no 3rd party to validate one grader is better. Do you think maybe regulation would help? Is there a public school to teach grading?
Thx for commenting. I’m not a huge fan of any regulation. But I do recognize these companies have the right to exclude certain things from their websites. One thing is for sure in 15-20 years the ranking of grading companies will be different.

I would understand extreme counterfeit like Gretzky rookies, but psa on a card 50 to 250 bucks doesn't really sit well with me. I ask myself what am I paying for the slab or the card.. I need it to be the card. I have 90 marvel cards absolutely Pristine without grading they are 20 each on ebay but graded some still selling 1000 bucks plus... For cards worth $1000 or so graded I would still use psa. Find a submission group here in the USA and they can handle your submission for you once psa opens back up. Gemmint.com is who I use. Jared is great. But use whoever you like. Pcsportscards is another great group in New York. Other cards depends who’s you like. Sgc has a submission group that can do $35 a card I think. Kk sports cards. CSG is $12 a card now just updated today for bulk slow turnaround. Hga offers some cool looking slabs. Slab the ones you want to protect with anyone. Slab the expensive ones with psa for maximum value.
Another good video Matt. I believe PSA is the king for one reason...they actually give out 10s and don't mess around with 9.5s like all the other grading companies do.
I'm wondering how accurate PSA grades are going to be for the cards they are hurrying to get graded? are they rushing and going so fast they aren't really looking at the cards? just handing out 9s and 10s to cards that don't deserve those grades? also I have seems video showing them manipulating grades 9:10 grade ratios for high dollar cards. I think there slabs suck too thin and cheap plastic for how much you are paying them to grade card the slab should be heavy duty to protect the cards. I don't understand what's with the love affair with PSA, a graded card should go for the same no matter the grading company. I want a company that is consistent in there grades and I'm seeing PSA (Please Send Again) isn't consistent and hands out 10s willy nelly. do you think new grading companies will expose PSA in how they have been grading cards? maybe new leadership/owner will help. Well that's my 2 cent worth.
A reputation is harder to build than most people think. While PSA has its faults, every grading company will due to its subjective approach and human error. Key is PSA has the resources to fix those issues and improve on them. Take for example their recent purchase of genamint. No other grading card company has the funds to buy that company. Branding matters and PSA so far has mastered that more than any other card grading company to this point. Thx for watching and commenting Robert.
Since we are on the topic what would your views be of getting something graded today using HGA as a soccer investment for 2021 EURO / 2022 WORLD CUP on a low value Insert cards that will be in the Hype around then (Based on my non-professional Gutfeel). It can always be reslabbed and regraded (at a cost) in the future if PSA gets their game together. But to me Bird in Hand is better than 2 in the bush. Cheers.
Consistent grading: I'm surprised that they have not come up with a 3D scanning ability to grade cards. Take the human element out of the process thus removing different opinions on the grade of the card.
If your card is attractive in the CSG case, I’d go for it. The 1973 Topps football set would look amazing in a CSG label, imo. If it only costs $8 to get a card legitimately graded compared to 30-60+ with the other companies, it might just be worth the investment. A card could sell for $20-$50 dollars less than same in a PSA and still have same ROI. HGA is my favorite choice for my future PC personally.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia I wouldn’t put an 86 Jordan or 79 Gretzky in an CSG slab personally, the green would be horrific against the cards colors, imo.
THOSE SPORTS CARDS REAL VALUE YOU MENTIONED OTHER DAY ON EBAY HOW TO FIND LOTS OF THOSE ARE FAKE BECAUSE THEY SET BUYER USERS TO SET THOSE SLD PRICES. THAT IS COMPLETELY MISLEAD. WHEN YOU WILL TRY TO BUY THE SAME CARDS AND OFFER BEST PRICES YOU WILL BE SURPRISED TO GET REFUSED. I HAVE FACED THIS ISSUE MANY TIMES.

@@DabiMidGG I have seen some pretty interesting comps from CSG that were a LOT closer to PSA recently. Very surprised. For example, a 2018 Prizm Josh Allen PSA 9 is currently selling at $240-250 and the same card in a CSG 9 sold for $206. Its only one comp as there aren't too many out there on the market but its not as big of a gap as I thought it would be. Saw a very similar situation with the 2018 Hoops Luka PSA 9 vs CSG 9....

New companies taking market share from PSA . PSA no longer a monopoly.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia just curious does PSA have 2 10 ratings? Is HGA 9.5 the same as a PSA 10 ?
@@Tintmaster775 no. In terms of sales nothing tops a PSA 10 in most cases. Bgs black label would.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia I was just asking as a Grading scale
@@Tintmaster775 every company may have a slightly different grading scale. PSA does not offer a 9.5.
Who are you to question how good everyone is!!
Sorry not understanding your comment. Please elaborate.
Cheers.
I’m with you. In the flip game, the quicker you can get something slabbed the better.
I sent soccer to CSG; hope to have them back in late June! I rather go with CSG/comic book knowledge than a nice/mix and match slab in HGA
@@jorgevillanueva2026 soccer to CSG might color match well with grass.
Powers Sports Memorabilia good point!...and now more than ever since Marihuana is also legalized in majority of the States! Lol !
@@jorgevillanueva2026 I have some bob Marley cards I can send to CSG.
Love the video brother thanks
Thx for watching.

Consistent grading: I'm surprised that they have not come up with a 3D scanning ability to grade cards. Take the human element out of the process thus removing different opinions on the grade of the card.
PSA just bought Genamint which will help with that.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia it would speed things up and all grading would be the same no matter which service. Maybe even bring the price down a bit.
Was just about to submit to CSG but now this has me thinking
I still like CSG mainly because they are part of cgc.
@@cardboardcheddar1674 good cards look great in CSG slabs with the green color match.
@@PowersSportsMemorabilia I wouldn’t put an 86 Jordan or 79 Gretzky in an CSG slab personally, the green would be horrific against the cards colors, imo.
@@cardboardcheddar1674 for those yes
WHAT U MEAN???
@@tyreesneed What I meant is some of the buy prices are fake.
@@bbokariontop oh ok, yes 100% ... i see this all the time when looking up on ebay recent sales
@@bbokariontop tons of cards I see and am like hell no nobody paid that lol ...
@@tyreesneed hahaha i am sorry to hear that. when the break doe not get sold and mailing all the work is painful i know
Awesome show outstanding very awesome

PSA,BGS and SGC are the legit big 3.
Think cgc is gonna overtake sgc. Better prices and has subgrades.
And already have like 20 plus years of experience grading comic books which are honestly 100x harder to grade than cards tbh.
@@Gdfsandoz but SGC is the one who has the experience in grading cards for more than 20 years now.
@@giacomogiacomo1194 yeah but sgc has cheap cases you can split by hand no subgrades. And they are charging 75 a card. Aint no one gonna spend their money there anymore. And from what I've seen cgc is hella strict really hard to cop a 10.
@@giacomogiacomo1194 especially at cgc when you can send a card for like 15 bucks on bulk submission with sub grades and it comes back to you in usually 2 months. If they can keep up their will overtake sgc cause sgc couldn't keep up. They raided their prices 1 day after psa shut down cause they couldn't handle the load.
PSA ONLY! Biggest on the Market with easy Design and great Security. BGS has Fake Slabs already. SGC very easy to crack the Case. HGA&CSG we will see... but what u already have tell... We talk about 20 Years. That's why... for me PSA only.
F all them companies. I can grade the card myself. I have 2 eyes and a brain. im not paying them people a buttload of money to do the same thing I can do myself and do it correctly. all them companies play games to control how many of what card in what grade are in the public. you know how many times I see "10" grade that look like 8??? you know how many times I see "8" grade that look like 10????
CSG just increased their prices today LOL
Just got the email. Not bad. Small increase. Knew that was coming though. $8 wasn’t going to last.
Same! But we got it while it lasted! Not seeing the same brand recognition in my sales yet with them yet though. Might take a year
@@DabiMidGG psa still king of course. Building a brand takes time.
Raw is lawww lol
