Hi, I am from Japan and lived in Tohoku (Now I live in Osaka). When the tsunami hit the Tohoku region in 2011, the Grand Yokozuna visited many times each town of the region where even reporters had rarely come to interview us. My grandparents cried so hard each time they saw Hakuho, telling me "Yokozuna remembers us."
He is the kindest man I have ever seen. Trust me: his kindness is genuine.

Truly an amazing video. Hakuhō is more than a legend, he's also a huge inspiration to sumo fans and rikishi alike. One of my favorite tricks up his sleeve is when he used "nekodamashi", clapping in front of the opponents face to temporarily daze them and even had a wry grin on his face when it worked. He really is the greatest mind to have ever graced the dohyo.

Slap to forearm to nekodamashi to slapdown is my favorite combo I've seen him do. The guy is dazed from the slap, has eyes closed from the clap, and just faceplants I to the clay

Another thing that distinguishes a GOAT from others: know when to go😂 Hakuho found the perfect time and date for that. He resigned with winning the pot 15:0 and seeing his successor being promoted to Yokozuna.❤ He told us later that he already had decided on resigning at that basho earlier, that he gave his papers in on day 10 after getting kashekoshi. On the last day, he was reassured that Terunofuji would get promoted to Yokozuna regardless of the outcome of their bout. 🎉

I wasn't expecting to finish this video bawling my eyes out. I'm half japanese and used to watch a lot of sumo with my Okinawan grandfather as a child, I never really understood it but I really enjoyed listening to the overexcited japanese announcers (even though I didn't speak a lick of the language) and watching people carrying those oversized banners that my grandpa said represent the prize for the bout.
I remember him talking about the greats he used to watch, names like Kitanoumi and Wajima, I also remember him saying he had great respect for Mongolian rikishi because they had to overcome the stigma of being outsiders in Japanese society just like Okinawans such as himself, even though they were technically Japanese. Fortunately my gramps is still alive. Back when we used to watch Sumo togheter Hakuho wasn't even a Yokozuna, next time I see him I'll be sure to ask him about the GOAT.
Thank you so much for this video, it really means a lot.

It was a privilege to see him live at a basho in Toyko. While it's impossible to compare people between generations, he was so far in front of his contemporaries while he was wrestling that sumo fans used to refer to him as "playing with his food" during tournaments to describe how he dealt with opponents. He weighed 160 kg but moved like a dancer, and was supremely skilled, but the key reason that he was so good is that he absolutely refused to lose, ever - the will to win burned brighter in him than in anyone else. In the same GOAT league as Bradman, Merckx, Gretzky, Karelin, Hawk, Slater and a couple of others

There's so much disrespect towards Hakuho out there in Japan, it's usually a mix of old-school-sumo-philosophy spinkled in with prejudice and racism. This man treated sumo like a competitive sport so he took every measure to ensure a win, and showing genuine emotion when he does.
But because of the traditions and ritualistic backgrounds of sumo, that went against what is traditionally considered "The Qualities and Class of a Yokozuna" and he's scolded for it all the time.
Examples would include the "wait for the opponent to make the first move" tactic. It's not so much that no other rikishi had been successful with that tactic, but sumo world in general would discourage that tactic by scolding and warning you if you'd ever done that.
He was one of the greatest champions of all time, and wanted to remain in the world of sumo as the master of a stable, but the Sumo Association refused to allow him to become one based on the reason that he's Mongolian. Hakuho did not want to give up Mongolian citizenship (as Japan does not allow multiple citizenships), so he continued fighting. He had great respect for the great Taiho, the 48th Yokozuna and previous record holder for the most top division tournament championships at 32, but was forced to break his record. When he did, he asked the Sumo Assoc, "is this enough to let me be a master as a Mongolian?", they said no. So he kept on fighting and taking criticism for missed bashos due to injury, until he blew the record out of the water. He asked again, the Assoc again told him no.
He gave up, applied for Japanese citizenship, put on one last 15-0 performance showcasing how he, at age 36, far removed from his physical peak, was still able to dominate with skill over young and hungry contenders.
Hopefully he can inspire a generation of rikishi to start recognizing that the present modern era needs sumo to become a competitive sport, and start to shed some of sumo's old, obsolete, and often harmful (to athletes) philosophies. So that it could spark interest in younger people (something it has failed to do for a few decades now), and reach new heights, as a sport.

while i do agree that some sumo traditions need to be relaxed, it's more of a cultural thing than a sport. changing it to become a competitive sport would just bastardize the whole thing, plus what's stopping people from just creating their own competitive versions of sumo wrestling? other than maybe the culture, i could absolutely see that getting in the way if you live in japan

That is actually not true, many Yokozuna made the rank without two tournament victories, but per chance the Yokozunas of the 90s and 2000s all made the rank with two Yushos in a row, so it was always a 100% clear case. If you look further back, quite a few Yokozuna made the rank with one Yusho.

There's actually another one of one of my friends when he was a teenager in here as well.

Lmao thanks man that's actually my favorite edit! and yeah my computer was struggling during it but I couldn't abandon the vision. I even accidentally updated my old as crap adobe premiere pro at one point and almost lost all the edits then had to get on the phone with support to get a compatible version for it lol after that I started exporting the video to my desktop every time I made progress just in case 😂

The only person I can think of who is as great as Hakuhō is Alexandar kraelin. He was a Greco Roman wresler at heavy weight who not only could pick up and throw his opponents over his head, but went 882-2 over his 13-14 years of dominance, his first lost was his first ever international match, and his 2nd was his last match ever at the Olympics. He didn’t give up a single point for 6 years at his height. He’s the only person I can think of who is of a similar level of greatness.

Well sourced and made content. IDK How you managed to get hakuho's childhood photos. But I am really impressed that you found Hakuho's exclusive documentary that is only available in Mongolian language. You literally exposed everything about Hakuho. 😮
    Few things I wanna add.
    1. As mentioned in the video, Hakuho came to Japan, when he was only 15 and less than 65kg. Its not ideal Sumo wrestler measurement and was not expected, since his father was prominent world class wrestler. So his teacher Chikubayama(12th master of Miyagino stable) aka Makoto Tazaki, treated him as a really young child, which is really unusual in Sumo stables. His training mates and friends were doing all the day harsh training and house jobs. Naturally he did not like this special treatment at all, cause it felt to him unfair. All he has done was, just eating, playing, sleeping. Even his parents did not treat him like that. After 3 months of nurture, he had gained 15kg grew 10cm. Just imagine, there could be no GOAT, if his stable master had sent him back to Mongolia. Personally I think that Chikubayama was a really good teacher.
    2. Hakuho did really love Sumo more than anyone else. For Asashoryu, it was all about fun, glory and money. He really dominated the sport and had exclusive talent for that. But Hakuho truly loves Sumo and does every details exacly right.

yeah if translated it goes like that. giant or avraga is champion /the other meaning of the same word/ and there are many stages of champion. to put it in simple manner its like champ -> high champ -> great champ -> grand champ. once you hit the grand champ noone no other champs will stand before you excep other grand champs before you.

Pretty good editing! It was cool to learn about Hakuho, I really respect him, you really can call him the goat. The easter eggs that were the really dark images seemed to be dark, at least for my friends. I was able to see them but I have mutant eyes.

It was Asashoryu until he retired, then Hakuho came out of nowhere and he became the goat.

Not really, towards Asa sad retirement, he had begun to drop many playoffs to hakuho.
Hakuho had achieved ozeki then yokozuna during the height of Asa's era. That was how strong he was back then.
Its just that his style wasn't as overpowering as how Asa's looked. Harumafuji also managed to get a few wins off Asa

One lesson from Hakuho's legendary career is that you can never make certain people like you or not hate you. It will always be their own choice. It takes no reasoning to hate you when they want to.
However, the bigger lesson is that, there are still always things that you can control, and a truly strong person will control all of them - training jard, competing, winning, showing compassion to those in need of help...... in the end, who cares if some preposterous sumo fundamentalist or Japanese nationalist hates him or not? He is loved by many from all over the world, and his acts and own decisions made this happen.
He is really the greatest of all time! ❤
