      @@NewtoSumoPodcast same. I’m over in the UK and don’t know anyone who is interested in Sumo so to hear people talk about it in the same way is refreshing.

    Becoming a Yokozuna requires outstanding skill but also outstanding resilience. I agree Onosato has these qualities, but I think Takerufuji is too prone to injuries to be a good bet.

      Definitely agree about the bet--I'd put money on Onosato way before Takerufuji. But I guess anything is possible--some wrestlers have early injuries and go on to have great careers afterwards. For now, let's just hope Takerufuji sticks around in Makuuchi for a while!

      His first ozeki tournament will be a hangover one like traditionally everyone has with all the parties. I think it won't take much after that though. He is one of the few who you think can beat terunofuji when then square off so that's a good sign

    I’ve watched sumo since Hoshoryu was Meisei’s attendant. I can’t remember the last time 10 wrestlers had double digit wins! Onosato has benefited from Onosho being injured, he’s lost to him twice. Also, Asanoyama being injured. Kirishima should have had a special prize, but you know he’s Mongolian. Kotozakura is shown way too much favoritism by the shimpan. Wrestlers better beat “daddy’s boy” clean or the call goes against you, a la Tobizaru.

      2024 has been a year of crazy aberrations. Two titles from a Yokozuna we thought might never compete again, a Makuuchi rookie winning a yusho for the first time in 110 years, a guy less than 10 tournaments into his career winning two titles, Tamawashi becoming sumo's all-time Iron Man. It's been a fun year for sumo!

      Onosato definitely had some good luck in this tournament, with Kotozakura and Hoshoryu having unusually poor performances, Takerufuji not being around, and Terunofuji not being around. He also won on a few very close calls. But you can only beat the wrestler in front of you and a win is a win! Let's see how he does when some of these guys come back to full strength and come back into the division!

    Do you think he will be even better than Hakuho and beat his record of 45 yusho?

    • @ProjectMathesar
      @ProjectMathesar 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      Personally no. I think Hakuho was the total package who could beat you with every method of victory known in the sport. Onosato really only has one technique: Push fast and hard - and if that doesn't work he's kind of stumped. Coaching can't really fix that either because his master - Kisenosato - was pretty much the same.
      Having said that, I think he's more than capable of winning 15-25 titles as long as he stays healthy.

    • @babyboo3236

      @@ProjectMathesar yeah I feel like Terunofuji could have easily achieved 15-25 titles as well if he was healthy. It’s sad to see talented guys like him not reach their true potential due to injuries but I guess that part of sports.

    • @NewtoSumoPodcast
      @NewtoSumoPodcast  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree with @ProjectMathesar. I think Onosato has enough skill to win many yusho, but few have ever surpassed 10 yusho wins, let alone over 20 or 30. But if he stays healthy and expands his repertoire, anything is possible!
