My strap broke in the same spot, overall I’m happy with the original but wish the proprietary straps weren’t so costly. Glad to see they’ve addressed the problem with the new version. Thanks for the review and comparison Ben. Excellent content as always.
I'm a hunter and I'm searching for a durable outdoor-watch with red backlight for quite a while now. I'll do some more research, but maybe the Suunto Core Alpha Stealth will be my way to go. Thank you for this detailed video. The only thing I missed was seeing the red backlight in the dark. That's a minus-point for this video, as it is a really outstanding key-feature of this watch. ;-)
Just so I'm clear on this... Suunto heard for years that the number one complaint about the original Core was that the display was too dim even when turned up, and so therefore they decided to degrade it even further in the upgraded model. Got it. Makes sense
i paid $110 for the core about a year ago and bought the nato band with the strap conversion kit for $10 and it looks kust like the alpha now for half the money
Hi and thaks for the video. I use to have a "traditional" suunto core and i loved it. There was something a did not like: the clock alarm was so silent that it was unable to wake me up. Do you think thant the clock alarm in the new alfa version is maybe a little bit louder? Thank you very much fot your support.
Thanks. Very helpful. I really am disappointed however that I fell for the Equalizer movie which showed the Suunto stopwatch in the larger number. Tricked by CGI again !!! I got the watch because my vision is not the best and yet the stopwatch couldn't be smaller. I find it strange since other features like Atl/Bar, which correctly puts the Altimeter in the larger size and pushes the time to the top in small size. Makes sense! Why would they not make the same decision with the stopwatch???
Thanks for the review. Does it look like they've updated the hardware/software at all? Would like to see more options for location, more memory for logs, lap features on the stopwatch, updated menus, and a little snappier performance. Looks like that stuff is all the same though. Would like to track down one of those straps though!
The black version has brighter whiter labeling. Not sure if I like it but the regular black has a reverse screen with white background and black lcd info
Hi Ben! I have a little watch collection among all of them that I´ve bought a Suunto Core All Black, like many other people for the "EQUALIZER" movies... I was a little bit disappointed with the chronograph or the countdown that Denzel Washington used on both pictures because those functions are in the area of the big numbers, but it seems that it was a requirement only for those movies. The real Suunto design was commercialized all over the world with the Crono and the Countdown placed below with smaller numbers and perhaps it´s only my perception is that all the numbers look more bright in blue mixed with a little green tone but obviously more bright on the movies... I have to recognize that this watch is excellent, precise, tough with just all functions that you need at any time anywhere. Thanks for the report Ben! (Since Barcelona, Spain).
Hi, thank you for your video it really helped me set that watch. It's very pretty and when I wear it in London instead my Rolex I will feel much safer.
I really love my Suunto Traverse Alpha it’s really been through the true test over the years. I would love to see the difference between the Traverse Alpha and the alpha core watch. Both in stealth mode. I don’t like the watch band on the newest Suunto watches wide at the top. Thanks for the post truly rugged and tough watches for military purposes
It looks like the caseback is different than the core. Is it rubber or PVD coated? I ask because it’s extremely important to me, as I have a metal allergy. Thanks for the review!
Got my Suunto Core Alpha Stealth two days ago now. Your Video was part of my decision process. 👍 And I reeeally love the red light! There are three things I don't really understand after reading the manual: 1.) There is a countdown-timer, but after each reset it is always on "5 minutes". Is there a way to change the amount of minutes of the countdown-timer? 2.) I don't understand where to get the right number of hPa (I use metric) of my local area to for the correct sea level programming. Can you help me? 3.) Using the barometer there there is a "diagramm". I don't understand how to interpret it. Any tips on that?
Matt finish bezel with lighter markings, strap, display a little dimmer display during the day, nothing really noticeable except for cosmetics. But the red backlight is better than the dim green one.
This was the review I needed. Thank you for putting it out. One suggestion- please consider doing your reviews under flat lighting. Your reflection on the crystal makes it difficult to see the screen. I also was hoping for a better demonstration of the backlighting function. The daylight washed it right out of your demonstration. Otherwise, great review. Cheers from Boston
I would get one of these (orig) but they have not updated the band. Every video I watch the owner talks about the band breaking. This is a show stopper. Seems Suunto would step up to the plate and resolve the issue. Thx for the video
@mike mancini I picked one up from Japan in mint condition for basically the same price I paid new in Afghanistan. It's in a display case now, haha. Recently, I picked up the garmin tactical. I like it a lot more than all glass smart watches due to the ruggedness, but I would have held out for the new X2 model if I had known it was coming in a couple months. Really, it's just missing a light, but I find the watch on the small side, so that takes a bit to get use to. Also the battery life is pretty solid for what I've got it set up for, 15 days with sleep monitoring
@@ewartrob hey man. thanks for letting me know. yea i looked and looked. as much as i wanted one of the x-lander i did go with sunnto but the stealth version, little more exp, but the red light did seem pretty sick, supposed to come this week.
I got mine yesterday ($230) amazon) and it took no time get set up, it looks good and all that... but stupid me thought I was buying the same watch as that in the movie The Equalizer... it is NOT the same, it doesn't have the big digital counter.... So disappointed in this watch, really wanted a large faced count up / down feature, the brightness is crap both indoors and out, I have the setting on 12 and still not much better .... Such a Regrettable purchase... So I got a SKMEI watch for under $30 from amazon, this watch has the large scree and large digital counter..
Got one from Amazon and had it for about 20 minutes and sent it back. Screen brightness sucked and could barely read it in the house and was not much better outdoors. Really not worth the $300.00 price tag! Going with a T Rex 2 instead.
@Tzep unlock the watch (if the button lock is on) and then hold all four corner buttons down until the "Suunto" prompt shows up. Once the display goes blank, hold the middle button until the prompt shows up again and then hold the top left until a menu appears. There should be an option called "contrast" and you can adjust the clarity of the display in there. Just hit the top left to confirm the adjustment afterward.
The new STEALTH is made in Finland... all the other Core series are made in China. Also, the STEALTH is tested to MIL-STD-810 specs, not sure the China series are.
Is this not the equalizer watch? I heard there was a newer updated version. If so this would be the 3rd version of this watch. I would like to have the newest version!
Can you remove all the pins to take out those metal things that stick out on this model to hold the different wrist band? I'd like to get this but with the band that comes with the all black watch. Please let me know when you see this sir. I really love this watch after seeing your review, I just don't like the different with the watch strap so I'm hoping it can be changed
Disappointing that Sunnto didn't make the display brighter. They should give the user the opportunity to make the display brighter and easier to read with better settings. Total let down. I'll look elsewhere for a better watch.
The screens are the same. I emailed Suunto and they confirmed this. Maybe its just your lighting (or old model has less backlight setting). There's nothing premium on this model other than the backlight being red (for military's usage). Just buy the regulars version for $199.
@@livingsurvival As I said, you can call or email Suunto CS and they will confirm what I stated. Keep in mind your old watch also has a old battery which will naturally result in a dimming display. Cheers.
We can get original core for ~150 USD, and core alpha costs 299 USD... so red back light = 150 USD? That's ridiculous. Suunto must think their customers are dumb.
With the $170CAD difference in price between the Core Black and the Alpha, I think I'll get the Core black. I see zero reason to buy the stealth and I'm not really sure why they made it.
You can change the brightness in contrast settings, there is a video showing how. It was on 8 when I got it out of the box and goes up to 15.
Loved the original Core...broke 3 straps as they were garbage, but the watch was top notch. Thanks for sharing
Suunto Core: People say it's hard to read the time
Suunto Stealth: hold my beer.
My strap broke in the same spot, overall I’m happy with the original but wish the proprietary straps weren’t so costly. Glad to see they’ve addressed the problem with the new version. Thanks for the review and comparison Ben. Excellent content as always.
Would the Suunto traverse alpha watch band fit in a suunto core alpha stealth?

I'd get you a garmin epix 2 pro. They have a red shift mode that works fantastically.

Needs sapphire glass dial cover option, then you’d really have a durable watch.
I won’t buy without it.

Damn all that black space could have solar collection now that would make this watch complete.
Solar would make the battery non replaceable which would be a deal breaker for the military

how are the buttons on the new one? i hear is a commun problem on cores, mine are good but some times they feel stiff.
