  • The 1972 Shaw Brothers Hong Kong movie 'Young People' 年輕人included extended kart racing scenes in a feature-length film.
The racing scenes were filmed at Sek Kong Airfield in the New Territories, Hong Kong.
The kart racing starts 7 minutes 57 seconds into the video (after the kung fu scenes, filmed at the Chinese University of Hong Kong).
Part 2 of the kart racing sequence can be viewed here: • Hong Kong Kart Racing ...
The karts and drivers were provided by the Hong Kong Kart Club.
Kart no.3 in the race was the then HK Junior Champion Paul Tarrant, aged 16 (full-face red helmet with dark visor, blue and also white racing suit).
I am the blonde-haired boy with the orange T-shirt sitting on one of the trestles as our father Arthur, wearing his Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses mixes 2-stroke oil for Paul's kart (with his HKKC racing no.67). Paul is checking the rear tyres.
Prior to its theatrical release on 7 July 1972 we were invited to a private screening of the film at Shaw Brothers studios in Clearwater Bay where we enjoyed the 'magic of the movies', with the opening drum solo setting the scene [ • Hong Kong Kart Racing ... ]
[Paul went on to race against karting World Champion Terry Fullerton at the First Philippine International Karting Prix in Manila on 31 March 1974, coming second, having briefly overtaken Terry. Terry described Paul as the best kart racer in Asia]
The movie's Director, Shanghai-born Chang Cheh 張易揚 is described as "The Godfather of Hong Kong cinema", directing more than 100 films.
Quentin Tarantino was influenced by Chang Cheh and listed Chang as a dedicatee in the end credits of 'Kill Bill: Volume 2'.
The Assistant Director was John Woo 吳宇森, who directed the 1989 Hong Kong movie ‘The Killer’, which became an international hit.
John Woo would go on to direct the Hollywood movies ‘Broken Arrow’ with John Travolta and ‘Mission: Impossible 2’ with Tom Cruise.
17- year old Maryknoll Convent School schoolgirl actress Agnes Chan Mei-ling 陳美齡 became a major singing star in Japan, where she lives.
Actress Irene Chen Yi-Ling 陳依齡 is Agnes Chan's older sister.
Shanghai-born actor David Chiang 姜大卫 now works as a film director. His brother Paul Chun appeared in the American movie 'The Sand Pebbles' starring Steve McQueen.
Canton-born martial arts actor Ti Lung 狄龍 was a favourite actor of Director Chang and made more than 70 Shaw Brothers movies, also working with Director John Woo and Jackie Chan.
Canton-born actor and 1969 kung fu World Champion Chen Kuan-tai 陳觀泰 has recently said “[On 'old martial arts films'] The old ones, the flavour of the fighting was better. Now, the actors cannot fight real kung-fu.” Chen made more than 80 Shaw Brothers movies.

Yeah typically the fight choreography for these 'modern setting' fillms under Shaw Brothers were done in a more wild and uncontrolled manner as opposed to the more eloquent and sophistated choreography of their period piece films.
