Thanks for the review. I'm surprised by the build quality and weight compared to an sb900. This a a solid flash for the price and I don't worry about it as much. I went with the TT685N, works great.
Build is pretty solid real world use so far no problem. The only thing I dislike is the AF assist beam it can miss the target on some AF points A wider spread would be better, but it's OK for what it is
Amazing review. I appreciate your candid opinions on the small things, like rotating the unit. I wonder if there are newer, better ones these days at a similar price point?
They have the TT685 II, which is mostly a minor update, I was thinking of buying one to do a video on it, but it's not that much different being honest. The II has USB-C port, but it can only rotated to 330 degrees v the 360 on the I. II has the TCM which converts the TTL to Manual with a button press (can be useful) I really wouldn't bother replacing I units with II ones. Either will get the job done.
Thanks Michael I wanted to make a video which showed the flash properly (v the usual behind the desk type video) but also includes good/weak points on the flash, essential for any review. I hope I have achieved that

One comment on the AF Assist Beam. I have the TT685N version and you need to be in Single Servo mode...not Continuous Mode for the beam to work. The instructions don't mention that and it took quite a while to figure it out. Great flash though.
Yes that is correct even for the Sony version on SLT/DSLR cameras the AF assist only works in single not continuous also same for Canon etc. The beam is pretty decent though, at the moment something which is missing from the ILC models bar the XPro which can on a few recent ones

for the tt685 and using a power pack, does the power pack provide all necessary power or do you still have to install the double A batteries for the electronics?

Comes down to size/power requirements. The 350 is nice for a compact unit, probably powerful enough or many users. However if you are using HSS a lot outside, or bouncing off higher ceilings - the 685 has the output you need to do that. G85 is smaller than many DSLR's you might find the balance better with the lighter flash If you're only a once in a while flash user the 350 is probably the one to go with. Hope that helps a bit

When using TTL with a shutter speed of 1/160 or slower everything is fine, but when im using a shutterspeed of 1/200 or faster, it seems to always fire at full power, which overexposes the image, flash is set to TTL and high speed sync, and i am able to choose shutterspeeds up to 1/4000, but over 1/160 i just fires at full power, what am i doing wrong?
Very strange do you have Auto ISO on? Sometimes I've found it a bit hot exposure wise, however it shouldn't fire at full power all the time in TTL. Worth checking the firmware on the flash, and update it if it's not the most recent.
Mr Baz Reviews I’ve checked firmware on both Camera and flash, and iso is set to 100. I dont know if it makes a difference which lens you are using, but im using the tamron 28-75, gonna try with the sigma 56 soon tho. Really dont know whats wrong, im able to control flash power i manual mode just fine, even using High speed synd, it just goes full power when i switch to ttl
I have an A6300 too...being honest unless you have a larger lens mounted the 685 is a bit big for the body, so I prefer to use the 350s. Unless you're trying to bounce flash off high ceilings the 350s IMO has enough power for day to day use
If you have a built in flash you can trigger it in S1/S2 modes shown at 6:13 If not then you'll need something to do that be it another flash or the transmitter
I tried one on a D500 a while back, the Nikon units are a bit more consistent with TTL, but there wasn't much in it at all the Godox is close to it. I wouldn't buy the OEM branded flashes anymore, they're not worth the price premium IMO
@@MrBazReviews so in your humble oppinion, could i really on the godox's ttl mode for like kids birthday parties and things like that? I am looking at the price and it is good but i can't find anything online about how it performs in the ttl mode. Thank you for you quick response ofc.
@@KrisTheChris I don't see a problem I used it on Nikon for an afternoon it worked fine most of the time, the Nikon SB's have the edge IMO for consistency on exposure, but the differences were not that large. Depending on the camera used make sure you update the firmware as well, sometimes they fix things not mentioned.
Godox quote 230 full power flashes, so real world that is going to be higher as you won't be firing at full power all the time (I'd say roughly 400 is a good average for normal use). It's going to depend on the batteries too, so I'd consider high capacity ones say 2500mAh or around there and decent quality ones.
Does it not work at all for anything? 5:42 if you press the zoom button then it highlights it, should be able to change the zoom on the flash. Power in manual should just work with the dial

I have the flash here it cycles optical master/slave, radio master/slave (so 4 presses), another press takes you to TTL mode, these are all single presses. Also you can push and hold the two mid buttons which will reset the flash and take you to TTL. Give that a try see how that works for you

I honestly think Godox is the way to go I say that because Yongnuo doesn't have the system Godox does (ie the larger AD models also integrate with the flashes) Might not be something to worry about now but later on possibly. I do have a few Yongnuo flashes kept an older manual one works well enough, really don't see any reason to invest in their system at this time v what Godox offer. I recently bought this flash and I'm having a hard time understanding the instructions from the manual, and I also find there are not very many videos that really explain every function in a way that is easy to understand. Can someone please recommend a really good tutorial video that takes you step by step through every function for people who are slow learners like me? Thanks. A lot of videos will compare one product to another (this video does that a bit too) and I really don't need that. I have the Godox Xpros flash trigger and I need to understand how the two work together. For someone who is new to this technology this is all quite mind-boggling.
This video pretty much covers that I spent a lot of time making sure I included this information it isn't that difficult if you watch from 5:15 it shows you the modes and explains how to switch between them. Reason I made the video is other ones I watched were pretty hopeless if I'm being 100% blunt I even went to the trouble to put the text on screen to make it 100% clear, it's also covered in the XPro video it's dead simple just pick the same group/channel it pairs up
Thanks Mr Baz. Your video is the best I have found, and I started watching the other one on the Xpros trigger as well. I guess I just have a harder time with new technology than do most other people because I'm an older person and didn't grow up in a digital world. I will watch your videos again and I do appreciate what you've produced.
Got to 7:04, lighting symbol cycles wireless modes (orange slave, green master) Radio symbol is what you want (not the lightning one on the LCD), cycle the wireless modes with the right hand lightning button. You should see channel 1, slave, group A. Turn on XPro press both middle buttons at the same time (to reset) it will be group A M 1/128 hit button near to the A (ie top one) and change power with the dial in the middle, , mode button cycles from off (---) M and TTL so just use what you want. You can just change it on the Xpro no need to change the TTL/M on the flash it does it automatically from the XPro. Fairly straight forward once you've done it. If I have time maybe in a week or so I'll do a super short simple tutorial bit overloaded at the moment but that's the meat of it. Hope that helps
Thank you again. I appreciate you taking the time to write this reply and I'm sure I'll figure this out in time. I just find all the icons and buttons with multiple functions confusing. I will subscribe to your channel and look for that video you mentioned. Thanks again!
At the moment on Sony E mount the AF assist isn't working for the flashes. It is for the XPro transmitter but only for a few models (firmware was updated). Camera gives the signal for the AF assist, so it's only working on A mount DSLR/SLT bodies at the moment. I'm not sure if they will add it they might if they got it working on the XPro - but it only supports a few recent cameras ie A7III etc none of the crop bodies.
I just got this today! I'm a total noob.i will have to watch your video like ten times. I got it for sgd155.i could get it at sgd140 but the guy went to all the trouble to explain so i guess that's ok.

@@MrBazReviews Oh I see. Thank you for the reply!
Does one need to buy a separate trigger if you use this speedlight off camera?
If you have a built in flash you can trigger it in S1/S2 modes shown at 6:13
If not then you'll need something to do that be it another flash or the transmitter
how does the ttl mode work compared to an sb700,800,900... is ti reliable enough?
Does the HSS work on camera? I've seen where a few of the others HSS only works wirelessly...
Yes HSS is working on and off camera as expected. Which camera are you using some makers required you set HSS or Auto FP on in the menu (ie Nikon)
Can you tell me how many flash you get from fresh set of batteries at full power.
Godox quote 230 full power flashes, so real world that is going to be higher as you won't be firing at full power all the time (I'd say roughly 400 is a good average for normal use). It's going to depend on the batteries too, so I'd consider high capacity ones say 2500mAh or around there and decent quality ones.
for some reason teh dial isnt doing anything, not changing the zoom or power?
Does it not work at all for anything? 5:42 if you press the zoom button then it highlights it, should be able to change the zoom on the flash. Power in manual should just work with the dial
it works when the screen looks like yours does at 5:42, my screen keeps starting up with 3 flash options (maybe the wireless flash mode?) and i dont know how to switch back into that mode.
Sounds like you are in wireless flash, the right hand button (lightning symbol) press that to cycle back into normal mode
yea thats what i thought but i push it and it only rotates between slave and master but doesnt leave wireless flash mode
I have the flash here it cycles optical master/slave, radio master/slave (so 4 presses), another press takes you to TTL mode, these are all single presses. Also you can push and hold the two mid buttons which will reset the flash and take you to TTL. Give that a try see how that works for you
wait, so wireless TTL is not working with sony? Even with the X1 transmitter?
No just for optical TTL wireless that is not radio TTL which does work
Please does this speedlight have an AF assist beam?
Yes but it only works on some cameras
Bro, i have this Godox TT685 & godox x1t nikon trigger. when i connect my flash to trigger there is test flash button on Godox x1t trigger. so when i click it flash fires means my flash and trigger are in same channel. but when i attached my Godox X1t trigger to my camera and click photos on manual mode flash does not fires? what will be reason will you please help me out? i am new in off camera photography
Which camera are you using? It should fire you could try to clean the contacts on the camera hot shoe and flash foot. All the camera will do in manual is send the "fire" signal the the Xpro which transmits it to the flash. Try putting the flash on the camera and see if that fires
Hello..Can you help me? I cant switch my flash to radio slave mode... flash always after z button reset flash...turn off and on...Can i send you video on email?
Reset should fix it
@@MrBazReviews I reset that damn thing manytimes and nothing :/ send back to amazon?
Is this compatible with an A6600?
Yes works with that model
Pls review on Godox TT685/N TT685N. Thanks.
Nikon version is exactly the same bar metal hot shoe really nothing different to cover
Olá amigão saberia me falar como posso fazer para a luz do auxílio do foco do flash godox 685s na Sony a73 funcionar
I don't think it works but I don't have an A7III to test, the XPro does work evidently. Try updating the flash firmware, AF-S see if it works
Mostly the triggers seem to be working not sure about the flashes
sir i have a query regarding godox tt685c
Fire away I will try my best
@@MrBazReviews sir i am event photographer. earlier i was using manual flash i have just upgraded to godox. the problem i am facing is in corporate event you have to cover the maximum area in your pics. for example theirs a group of people standing font and back row , here is the problem when i click the front row will get the full flash lite but people standing at back goes dark. i hope you understand . i am using 80d with 18 135mm
Suitable to use on D3200 nikon ?? Pls advise
Get the TT685N the last letter is for the camera brand (N Nikon C Canon etc)
@@MrBazReviews thank you sir for the prompt reply ..
Does HSS work wirelessly?
Yes HSS is supported for radio wireless
Thanks so much for that... very helpful indeed!
You're very welcome!
Hey bud. Was about to get the yn 685 but then got told to look into the godox speedlites. I have no experience with flash so one of these would be my 1st foray into ofc. Im ready to order my first lighting kit. A flash, stand and softbox.
Any opinion between this and the yn flash? Also us thus better than the tt600?
Thanks
I honestly think Godox is the way to go I say that because Yongnuo doesn't have the system Godox does (ie the larger AD models also integrate with the flashes) Might not be something to worry about now but later on possibly. I do have a few Yongnuo flashes kept an older manual one works well enough, really don't see any reason to invest in their system at this time v what Godox offer.
TT600 is a manual flash no TTL has radio though 685 isn't expensive it's hard to really think of reason not to get one
Hope that helps a bit
Mr Baz Reviews big help, thank you very much, appreciated. Yes will be getting a godox strobe down the line so this is a good case in point. I'll go with this. I've been doing natural light pirtraits of my niece and mates children but I have a few pics using ofc and it was like an OMG moment. I used my mates basic setup, such a cool moment using ofc for the first time for the look it gives to your pictures lol
I like natural light too, there are though times being able to control the light is useful. One of the most interesting parts of photography I'll hopefully get around to doing a few videos on it once I'm up to date on review items. Let me know how you get on!
Mr Baz Reviews are you on instagram? Mine is esm1987 if you are, I'd like to follow to see your pics. What trigger do I need for the ofc ?
Not on Instagram but will have a look will be doing more videos on photography just have to catch up a bit on current items. X Pro is best trigger also did a review on that
As another commenter asked - What's the autofocus assist beam like? That's critical for events.
8:55
It works OK if you have an AF point under the lines it's not as good as OEM AF beams (which use longer lines) and it's fine for most uses.
How come my flash only goes off when the light is off or when it’s dark ?
Should work for fill flash in daylight or brighter times. No reason why it won't but check you have HSS on

Thank you for your kind words it means a lot, I am happy it was useful for you. I have other videos on photography and will be doing more, appreciate your comment
does it support canon?
Of course just make sure you get the TT685C, the last letter is the maker ie N Nikon, S Sony , C Canon etc
Lots of love 💕
Is this lens compatible with nikon d5300? Thank you
You mean flash? Just get the TT685N the last letter is the maker (ie C Canon, S Sony, N Nikon etc)
Good guide. How do I stop the sound when zooming in and out, please?
You can't it's the motor making the sound it's not too bad, but it's not as quiet as some flashes. You can go in and manually set the zoom if you want just use the left side button Zm/Cfn
Thank you for your help.
Would this fit an A6400?
It will but you might find the smaller flash more balanced
th-cam.com/video/TKMrGBPPMHo/w-d-xo.html
350 is quite a bit smaller, but maybe enough power for general use
@@MrBazReviews Ok, cool, was looking at that too. Cheers!
@@MrBazReviews thanks for your suggestion. I have a6000 and want to get tt685 with a trigger or use it on camera. Agree tt350 is more compact, but would that be enough for the events? Thanks
@@gera9211 Depends how you use it for direct flash at not big distances it's fine, if you're bouncing flash with high ceilings then you want more power probably. You can compensate with faster F stop, higher ISO, slower shutter speed to a degree though.
@@MrBazReviews thanks for the quick response. I would bounce it anyway indoors, with a diffuser. For the outside with direct light to the subject but again with a diffuser. I was thinking about 685ii but there is a really small difference. The only thing worth is TCM.
This flash is compatible with sony a6500
??
Yes work with that model and older ones
Multi/RPT doesn't work with the Godox Xpro?
Multi flash works on via the Xpro also works on the X1T with this flash and others
why does my auto assist light not fire ??
What camera are you using?
Sony series I just saw your tab saying it is not supported , but why does it still not fire even when not connected to a camera
Hope it worked out!
i can't switch off af assist beam
7:27 in custom menu turn off AF option light won't come on
@@MrBazReviews yes i did, but af assist beam still on
@@bayuharuman3104 Here if I set AF to "off" no AF beam comes on. Re-set unit with pressing both buttons it should work
@@MrBazReviews i'm sorry, which button i should press?
@@bayuharuman3104 When on both middle buttons at the same time
Nice
It's decent for the cost ie way cheaper than OEM flashes
for "detailed" you missed showing us the af assist beam...
Maybe watch the video properly next time: 8:58
But of course feel free to enjoy the numerous "dude behind the desk" videos which don't even show you the flash at all ;-)

@@MrBazReviews The calumet ball heads 3 sizes are worth a review, perfect.
@@derekgillan7314 I've not used them. At the moment I'm trying to ponder what to make photo content on, but I also have to think what is going to bring in decent views - hence increase revenue = more content. It's a balance sometimes. I don't mind looking at heads/tripods as a lot of channels can't be bothered doing videos on them.
The Godox videos have been consistent, they took a good while to make, looking back perhaps I could have made it a bit shorter!
