      Gold Foil pickups was also used on a few expensive guitars in the 60's. DeArmond pickups was used on the Fender semi hollow. And Gretsch. And the Sears semi hollow was over 1000 dollars in todays money.

    The fact that even a 130-year-old brand can embrace locking tuners says a lot about how stuck in the past Gibson is.

    These Gold Foils ARE NOT ...Harmony just puts the foil on them for a look that they had when they used Dearmond Golden Tone real Gold Foils. These are regular HB's even wound on the old Gibson winders that came with the Kalamazoo old Gibson building where they are made. In fact Harmony is made on the top floor and Heritage use the ground floor. Their Silhouette model has real old spec Firebird PU's but with the same goofy gold mesh. Pull them out and have a look and tell us what you see. Thanx

    • @casanovafunkenstein5090
      @casanovafunkenstein5090 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was about to say that gold foil pickups aren't really a thing (in the sense that multiple manufacturers made completely different pickups and placed the mesh overlay onto them because it was a cheaper way of covering the bobbins than using metal or plastic) but the one unifying thing about them is that they were all single coils with weak magnets and very low wind count (again saving on cost of materials but also because humbuckers weren't really a thing until Gibson and Gretsch came up with their respective solutions to get rid of the hum. They were also generally not adjustable because they usually weren't routed underneath).
      In short a 'gold foil humbucker' isn't a recreation, it's usually a regular or mini humbucker with a pretty dress on.

    • @Paul_Lenard_Ewing
      @Paul_Lenard_Ewing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@casanovafunkenstein5090 The very first Gold foils were made by a guy in Japan who's job was to come up with a super cheap PU that could be surface mounted so they need not route a hole in the guitar and literally glue on the PU. The PU was copper wire wrapped around a fridge magnet. Fridge magnets were produced by the thousands and dirt cheap, the wire is minimal and there is no bobin.

    9m52s you mentioned that the fret ends aren't flush with the fingerboard (aka fret sprout). I suspect the particular Jupiter you got has been stored somewhere with lower humidity and the fretboard has shrunken a bit. If so that isn't Harmony's fault. I know a lot of people would cry over it since it’s cool to hate Gibson and they are the only ones whose wood shrinks lol 😉. A little F1 oil on the fret board during a string change almost solved it. Dude. Play a Gibson Les Paul Tribute. Amazing guitar, but the fretboard edge is anything but rounded. I think the reason the Harmony has a sharp fretboard edge is because it’s like the same ones used by Harmony. I think Gibson doesn’t round its edges because their “nice” guitars have binding on the neck. I’m guess if this thing had a binding, it would feel more comfortable, but it’s an “affordable” guitar, so we’re not going to see that. Anyway… awesome review! Thanks, man.

    Someone had control of the Harmony name, post-bankruptcy but pre-Bandlab. I had this cheap Harmony-branded (clearly not the real thing) Strat copy from roughly 1990-1991 that my Dad picked up for me from Sears (it was a catalog return that he got for pennies on the dollar… I also got a sweet MIK Cort Viva that way, but that’s a story for another day).
    Plywood body, sunburst finish, maple fretboard. I still have the neck, which is actually fairly OK (I had to donate the body to someone many moons ago because… reasons). I think this version of Harmony (branding) was again related to Sears in some way, or possibly Synsonics, whoever they were. Just recently I saw an old Sears Catalog that had the exact same guitar (headstock shape and all), but with Synsonics branding.
    I’m sure it was all Cort, in the end. Everything is Cort, and Cort is everything. Long live our Cor-Tek overlords!

    I had a Harmony Rebel for about a week. What I loved, the aesthetic, locking tuners, light, simple lay out, no coil tap, nitro, the pick-ups were gorgeous, the nicest bridge clean tone I’ve ever played, which is so awesome, still a hum-bucker so can be still be driven and chugged, (a single pick-up guitar could be really cool), Super vibey guitar. What I hated, the push push knob to change to in-series, constantly paranoid that it had been pushed and no way of knowing, and it’s a sound I don’t like, but is subtle can just make you think that the guitar or amp just sounds shit today. The neck dive was unusable, was frankly aggressive, the guitar would throw it self to the ground. So the guitar had to go back. Such a shame.

I think they are making so many new guitars and alot of the old woods that used to be used building guitars aren't around anymore. So alot of new guitars are from newish woods which would have more moisture and cause shrinking more. Not a deal breaker, but I’m not a fan of the knobs aesthetic. That’s just a subjective thing though obviously. They just appear to be cheap I guess. Like I said though, it’s just an opinion and that’s subjective.
    Cool to see Hunter standing up and rocking out! That’s just a fact!! 😎👍
