Sometimes you don't always have the outside berth and are stuck trying to get out of the inside. Here we have a few things that made this job a bit more challenging than others.
As a retired Fort Lauderdale diesel bunkerman, running a 38,000 gallon tug and barge for Peterson Fuel. I can truly appreciate your skill level. You are a real Captain, worthy of praise. Thanks and good luck. Capt. Jeff McGee USMM
Thank you for watch and for the kind words Jeff. One of my best friends I grew up with had a great Peterson Fuel story from years ago. (I'm sure you know him. He owns Cape Ann Towing). Thank you again and please consider Subscribing if you haven't already. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
Tim, I was a Refinery Superintendent at the Hess Port Reading Refinery for many years. I retired shortly after the refinery was shut down & terminal operations were sold to Buckeye. Although I was responsible for the entire complex during off hours, I very rarely had any issues at the terminal, 2nd reserve or with barge operations. So obvious Kudos to you & your safe tug boat skills, that we never crossed paths !
Thank you very much for watching and subscribing Barry! I'm sure it is no surprise to you that all of us love what we call "The old Hess Docks". Everywhere you guys built docks, no one fendered them up as well as you guys did! #CUOTO
Awesome video!! You know what they say about good judgment.... “Good judgement comes from experience... which comes from bad judgement.” Nicely done getting out of a tight spot! #CUOTO
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words. I am currently playing with a 360 camera and that should give you the viewer the ability to move your prospective around the boat. #CUOTO
Impressive skills honed by hundreds of hours maneuvering. It’s apparent that patience is the key to maintaining positive control and staying ahead of the ship.
Damn Tim. You did a mighty fine job of backing out of that spot.. I was thinking a bow spring off the wharf and you did it all without a line, once again it shows your experience and knowledge.. great stuff. I think Capt Ron would love being a tug boat captain haha..
The more I watch your videos, the more likely I'm sure it is to happen, but gosh it is weird to hear yourself over radios... But always good to hear from the Mighty Elk River on my nights at work!
@@TimBatSea I am indeed! I'm on one of the overnight sections, just finished talking to you a few times last night/this morning actually! I'm the one in this video at the 14:00 mark, 15:50 mark, not sure how much you differentiate our voices but that one's mine haha
@@whackypanda You guys do an incredibly good job. I can't think of many government operations that work as well with the public and provide such a valuable service. And most people don't even know you guys are there. Thank you very much for the work you do and for your support of the channel. I hope to get back to see you guys soon to shoot the long anticipated VTS video! #CUOTO
Some of those docks were built back when a 20-30,000 barrel barge was considered big! Nice job. Also, a tug of 1,000 to 1,800 HP Single Screw was considered a power house!
Loved watching this one. I was an armchair quarterback with parts. have, years ago, taken a barge out of one of those inside berths at that terminal, with a single screw, 1800 HP tug, built in 1959, with flanking rudders. Don't really recall how we got the barge out, but we did. If I was trying to do the job Tim did, I would have had a spring line out to work the stern off the dock. Tim, Just want to make sure, you were doing that at the start of the ebb tide, right? Nicely done. And, yes, you do sound cool and calm as mentioned by someone else.
Nice and slow, that's the way to go!! I used to see so many people at my marina try to rush in and out of their dock space. They always had trouble. You make it look easy!!
Just watched that movie again two nights ago.. great movie... What I find so fascinating is that this video grabs me and holds my interest tight until it is over.. and it is basically the same thing most of the time.. I am blown away at how this intrigues me so much.. every time I watch you pilot that tug with a barge.. I am just glued to the screen.. Rather strange the things that will fascinate a person isn't it.. Well Tim my brother.. this is great of you to share your time and work with us like this..You seem like a real good man to me and a fellow I would gladly call friend.. You take care of yourself, be safe and carry on!
watched this on a slow connection it took 65 mins to watch. I could not stop watching the progress. At times movements need all the power a tug can give. On others finesse. “ ill just stop and let her settle down” a brilliant action. The situating gets clearer, the options all open up, and the next move is in the right direction. If you attempt to power on its often the case that you have to power to correct . It was slow. It did use all the space. The eyes of the crew were there to give feedback and so spacial awareness. Judging distances is difficult from one place. A crew working together, AGAIN.. I Love these, the simple to the difficult, the normal to the unusual. Keep them coming they always are watchable, they always are informative and show the ability of people working together for one purpose....Amacf
Another great video thanks Tim. All my boating has been on UK inland waterways on nothing longer than 35 feet so would give the stern a good shove off before jumping aboard myself. It's not quite so easy for you!
I have spent days (and nights) worried about getting my little boat out of an inside berth with tidal currents. Impressive as usual watching you pilot all that mass, thanks again.
Nice Job Tim I really enjoyed that video I can relate on a smaller scale the boat that I run in Portland is big for the slipway that we are in when the big yachts are in there it gets pretty tight anyway once again I enjoyed the video Thanks

Hi Tim: I love-love your weekly video Blogs. I find them very interesting and educational. You've come a long way since your first couple of videos. Bravo!! You have a great way and disposition about you. Thank you. I 've been a boater my entire life - growing up on the Great lakes and learning old school navigation (speed, distance & time) from my grandfather and then Dad. I now live in So CA and we have a 51' Riviera. Even with all the latest and greatest electronics gear I still make trip worksheets to navigate our speed, distance & time routes and waypoints. You are an amazing Pro and so enjoyable and easy to watch each week. Thank you for your time, effort and commitment to improve your new craft. God Bless you Tim.
Good Morning Steve. Well that was a great way to start my day off! Thank you very much for the kind words and for watching. Terrestrial Navigation, Dead Reckoning, Shooting a Running Fix are all very importin skills that many are loosing because they are relying on the electronics. Good for you. Keep doing it. Even something as simple as knowing you have 21 miles to go and you are making 7 knots, of course you know that you will be there in three hours, but many would rather look at the plotter and get the TTG because they are in the habit. Stay safe and I'll #CUOTO
