Pimping has narcissism written all over it. Shaming someone is never the answer. But I guess it gives you tough skin. They always pacify narcissistic behavior

It’s so important that something positive comes from these experiences!! I’m graduating in August, and I’ve had some nightmare experiences. But one of my most significant learning moments was when my CRNA said, “ I want your wrong answers too, so we can improve on your weaknesses.” This took so much pressure away from the situation, and I still recall what I learned from that day. I know this is how I’ll treat my students after I graduate.

I am an anaesthetic assistant in the OR. I have been pimped on a few occasions. All they questions I have been asked are really difficult and if you don't know the answer they just seem to ask more difficult questions. You just feel horrible after the shift is over. Some of the anaesthetic doctors that I worked with would ask me questions that would ask their anaesthetic trainee. e.g. the pharmacological mechanism of anaesthetic drugs. what is the MAC of certain inhalational drugs. anatomy questions relating to certain regional blocks.

Bolt, as I watch more and more of your videos, I'm garnering the impression that you and I have a lot similar. I'm about your age (32), I'm graduating my program soon, have a lot of the same viewpoints as you, and I've had very similar situations in regards to pimping. I also have vowed similarly for when I'm practicing with how I will teach students in the future. There is simply a better way to teach than pimping. It is inferior and belittling. Cheers!

I got rapid fire quick questioning by an MDA while observing in the OR while in school for my BSN, I wouldn’t have guessed that was what was happening at the time. He was nice, but the questions got progressively more in depth, and it did feel like we were being grilled a little bit as students. It was questions all about the PNS, alpha 1&2 & Beta 1&2 and meds that could help in various scenarios involving these receptors and thankfully we’d recently studied and I was able to answer many quickly, but when it got to anesthetic meds I quickly conceded I didn’t know because we don’t study those. He was a good teacher and seemed to enjoy teaching, but it definitely felt like being grilled all while he was doing a spinal block for an OB pt in the OR with just me another student, the pt, and himself 😅.

    • @BoltCRNA
      @BoltCRNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh yes, just wait until it's you trying to place the spinal, sweating in your sterile garb and the provider actually getting upset when you don't know.

Great post. Reminds me of my husband's stories of his Plebe year at U.S. Naval Academy. Surviving it, he said, helped him. No matter how bad a situation was, even a fire fight in Vietnam, he would think "at least this is not as bad as Plebe year." Like you, he said he never wanted to be that kind of Midshipman. Forewarned is fore armed.

There are better ways to teach . I always tell them at the beginning of the day, there are no dumb questions when you’re taking care of human beings. I ask questions too, but at times where they aren’t doing a dangerous new skill. I also let them know if they get the wrong answer it is ok. That’s why they are in school. Sometimes they ask me questions that I have forgotten and we look it up together.

I think there’s a fine balance between reasonably/fairly putting someone on the spot in training and shaming them. Those experiences harden people for sure but it poses the risk of perpetuating that culture. I view it as multiple routes to get to the same destination. In the end I think people learn best when they are self motivated and are given the tools they need to enhance their knowledge. Also, some people are just plain not meant to be teachers in any capacity.

    That’s very wrong.
I really hope these inappropriate people that is doing this pimping thing have a lot of legal issues to force them to stop BS.
I don’t like that and I think people should react against these abusive situation.
This is not teaching, that’s ridiculous.
I think make sense people recording this situation and start using some evidence for a legal process.
There is a huge difference between suggesting bad studies that they are not ready for that thing or position, than humiliating people.
I am sorry about this situation.

  • @christylouis2611

I will say that while I understand the benefits of pimping for educational purposes, it shouldn't go as far as insulting the student's intelligence and belittling them. At that point, it's blatant that it's a personal attack, which crosses the line of unprofessionalism. These higher ups who do this better be careful because they may mess around with the wrong student one day, whose mommy and daddy have influence in the judicial branch lol

Sometimes you need to bend the bamboo so as it learns not to break when a storm comes. I remember my batchmate saying to me " Nobody rattles my feathers " after medical clerkship. I bet you all want a doctor who doesn't break under pressure in saving you from death!
