Love this haircut. River is great in this film, even though he appears only in the beginning of it. His hair has a mind of its own in the film, and you've reconstructed it well. I have also done this haircut on a couple of friends--wish they would always keep their hair this way. Thanks!
Hi Dylan, I think the easiest way is to explain it with your hands. Say you want a weight line that starts straight across in the back and then gets longer in the front, as long as possible (you could also call it a bob). The undercut could be done after you get the basic shape right, just to be safe. I don't usually do such a shaved undercut, just a layered back below the weight line. Good luck!
I literally JUST cut my hair like this about 2 hours ago. Everybody loves it! Thank you Salon Guy, couldn't have done my hair as my fave actor without this video! Forever great ful I mean Until my hair falls out I guess Still tho Thx
Great video! I really miss River Phoenix, one of my favorite actors since I first saw him in Stand By Me. I was 13 years old when it was released back in 1986, and after seeing it twice in the theater, I remember thinking, wow, who is this kid River? At the time, The Goonies & Lucas had been released just prior, and both "Coreys" were pretty popular among teens. Then River just came out of nowhere, unless you saw Explorers. He was so good!! After the movie, I then saw the Stand By Me music video and was surprised on how different River looked with his blond hair grown out, parted w/gel, and wearing a black t-shirt. I always thought River had great hair, especially in Indiana Jones and I Love You to Death. Even in Dogfight, his Marine Corps high-n-tight was a perfect 0-3 inches, the same cut I had while in the Marines, always leaving the bangs long.
The last Crusade was filmed in summer '88. Prior to shooting River havd very long hair and as he was playing young Indy from 1912, his hair had to be cut. I'm guessing the undercut was done so River could keep some of the long length, as most of the time his hair is under his Boy Scouts hat.
Great video and loved his hair this way and every other way he ever wore it, he really did have the most beautiful hair, but it was 1988 or 1989 when he made Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade :-)
Huh, this is basically the edward furlong terminator 2 haircut. Thanks dude i've been looking for tutorials on similar haircuts and you've been the only one who could help.
Thank you soooo much very helpful!!! I didnt realize that the undercut was pretty low. It seems pretty simple thank your so much for this and yea I know he normally did flip his hair all over the place which I always found so cool about his hair styles. Again thanks sooo much really appreciate it!
TheSalonGuy Question would you recommend to use product while growing hair out? Im still working on getting to that hair length and you just blow dried it right?
TOP!! I didn´t realize how easy is to make this haircut. Only what must be done before this haircut is to leave hair grow, especially on the top. Thank you so much Steve, it´s a shame that I cannot visit you due to long distance between each other. Cheers!
First off, you are the ONLY person I watch for haircutting tutorials. You explain everything so clearly, and beautifully..plus I appreciate the fact you don't go a million miles an hour, so your AWESOME! Secondly, stupid question, but my friend wants to combine THIS specific "River - Young Indy" curtain fringe with a pompadour ( the pompadour being because he has very thin hair, especially on top) Is that at ALL possible?? I hope you see this, thank you SO much again, Steve, your amazing❤
It’s so easy you can do it at home. I don’t go to barbershops because I’m never fully satisfied what they do. As a plus you save some money which you can use to buy organic shampoo.
I have a middle part, medium length(on top of the ears) version of this and I get a lot of compliments for it. And BTW River Phoenix was in the 3rd film(Indiana Jones and The Last Cruesade), which is from 1989, not 1991.
absolutely love this cut thanks wanna have it when my hair grows more could u show the Rive phoenix hair style from My Own Private Idaho as id like to have it while my hair grows thanks steve
Technically speaking this movie came out in 1989 and they were filming in 1988 so River was actually sporting this haircut in the late 80's. Edward Furlong got the exact same haircut a few years later for Terminator 2. I don't know the origins of this haircut but I do know Japanese anime had many of their main characters using similar haircut in the early 80's. Lookup the Japanese anime Area 88 and the main character was sporting a similar style . upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/Area_88_Original_OVA_Series.jpg
just a little info for people wanting this h/c .if you have wavy hair you'll need some product ( like a gel ) and a blow dryer, for the sleek straight look try a flat iron ( they are some good inexpensive one's @ Walmart or Target) got curly hair ? no.Would look really cool with pieces of hilites in the angled area in front.
Oh what a coincidence I was watching the movie beginning again a couple of days ago and I've just came across another hit video of yours great guy.. I watched the movie at the time.. And I used to have the same haircut except mine wasn't perfectly straight.. Even the manquin's is not as Phoenix's... I guess his back wasn't undercut that blunt the undercut area was gradated..
I grew up in the 80's and 90's, and I had the undercut way back then, with my hair pulled up in a pony tail. I guess I'm old enough now to see how trend does a full circle because this younger generation thinks they came up with the undercut idea, but they didn't. Anyways, I wanted to know if you would do a tutorial on Edward Furlongs hair from Terminator 2: Judgment Day?
I tried different barbershops. Both cheap and expensive. All I want is a medium hair thats why I go for short trims but they always cut my hair short and they always use the trim scissors very low. Maybe one of the reasons is I look like 9 years old but Im really 20 atm. I like watching your vids. kinda compliments my frustrations and hope to get better haircut the next day. :)
Okay, I don't really know how it works that every time I want to cut my hair you post a video with that haircut, but I'm happy this actually happened. You did great job ( as always) but my mum will never let me shave my hair so here's a question- do you think this haircut would work without shaving?
I think a nice modern twist would be to have it not be straight across in the back but to have it angled down towards the contours of the nape area slightly.
Cool haircut man. what type of hair would you describe river phoenix's? What type of hair would this style work for? Thick, thin, straight, wavy? Thanks
Hi Steven, i had this exact same cut for about 6-7 months and I get a lot of compliments for it. I followed all your advices in this video to make it happen, but instead of a bowlcut like you did, i told my barber to taper the back nicely so that it's not such a hard line. With that being said, I don't really know how to use the blowdryer to achieve the look River and your mannequin have (where the hair fall beautifuly down, mines are sort of "spiking up"). You seemed to have blowdried the hairs in all sort of direction and it worked fine. Any advice ? Using a brush to lead the hair in one direction or not ? Thanks for the tuto !
Dylan My hair, when dry, sits at my chin. If I pull them all the way, maybe 2cm past it. But the style is better suited when the hair is just at the chin, not like mine (a bit too long), and yours (a bit to short) haha. Keep growing your hair a bit and it will look great ! I can send you pics if you want so that you can make an idea of what best for you ^^
Dear salon guy, I am going to comment this on a ton of your vids so it (hopefully) gains traction. PLEASE do a tutorial for Clayne Crawford's Martin Riggs
What would you recommend if i was starting with an undercut that was buzzed to a #1 on the sides and top that goes from 4" in the top/front to about 2" in the top/back. Should i just let it all grow out so should i still go get it cut once every month to month and a half?
Sick haircut. Can you do lane toran's hair. Huis hair is insane. And do you know what products are good for making thick wavy hair slick without hair getting too stiff.
Pleaaase do another River Phoenix video, when he had longer hair. his hair was just legendary. Rest in peace
x2
I wonder what the studio is like at night. A room full of bodyless creepy mannequin heads with amazing haircuts
lol
Yeah..I'm in hairdressing school and I have 4 heads in my room...You get used to it...
Fashionably dreadful
I love how the parted hair is in trend again. I loved 90s guy's haircut
You're a wizard with hair, man. Great work.
Preciate that!!!!
I love River so much, he was an amazing actor and I love his hair and his little nose omg
River Phoenix was - is - my favorite 80's actor ever!
I don't know if everyone will agree with me but River looked sexy with any haircut he had
Couldn't agree more!
Veggie Whxre HECK YES 👏🏻
True!
Yes mate
Is because he was handsome :)
Love this haircut. River is great in this film, even though he appears only in the beginning of it. His hair has a mind of its own in the film, and you've reconstructed it well. I have also done this haircut on a couple of friends--wish they would always keep their hair this way. Thanks!

Draw the shape with your hands.
I love your voice Salon Guy. I could listen to you all day.
Wow thx!!!
TheSalonGuy you should do the river Phoenix hair style in My Own Private Idaho when you get the chance! 😊
"I have a crush on this hairstyle"
2:01 I Laughed so hard imaging this head screaming
I literally JUST cut my hair like this about 2 hours ago. Everybody loves it! Thank you Salon Guy, couldn't have done my hair as my fave actor without this video! Forever great ful

Still tho

That's the skater haircut my brothers and their skater friends had from 88-92 ♥️♥️♥️ Miss that cut

This video made me smile. It really did look like rivers haircut, especially when you flipped it over. :)
River phoenix was ahead of his time.man what a guy
I'd love to see River Phoenix haircut from "Running On Empty". Anyway, good job!
Looking back on this video. This haircut is very popular now more so than it was when the video was made. Glad you made this video.
I actually have my own version of this hairstyle. Super cool.
The last Crusade was filmed in summer '88. Prior to shooting River havd very long hair and as he was playing young Indy from 1912, his hair had to be cut. I'm guessing the undercut was done so River could keep some of the long length, as most of the time his hair is under his Boy Scouts hat.

I'm amazed that such a fantastic haircut is so easy thank you so much for sharing
Finally, the perfect quarantine home hair cut. Thank you.
Huh, this is basically the edward furlong terminator 2 haircut. Thanks dude i've been looking for tutorials on similar haircuts and you've been the only one who could help.
This is the cut that I have looking for.. A big River Phoenix fan also...

Jacob Desciak 😓😲👏😍 A guy who attempts to look like and idolizes River 👍😶😚

I'd love this haircut but...I don't have the confidence in any of the barbers around me. None of them have your gift
James Greenway lmao I don't trust them either
It’s so easy you can do it at home. I don’t go to barbershops because I’m never fully satisfied what they do. As a plus you save some money which you can use to buy organic shampoo.

Doing this for my teen son who wants to keep it longish but needs a trim at back. Thanks
Btw I am a huge River fan 💓
some things never occur to you till you are shown. great job mate.
Cheers mate
That moment when a mannequin has a better hairline than yours...
do you expect them to put some janky hairline on it lmao
those mannequins were created to have better hairlines.
i would probably fall for any guys with this hair style.
That movie came out in 1989. River's part was filmed in September of '88.
This Haircut is so sexy!
ikr
Keep up the great work
Thanks a lot for the video, I always wanted to know how it was done. Hugs from Brazil.
River Phoenix devo nod haircut!!

what is the back of ur hair like, is it like the bowl or is the hair at the back cut off??
crooks It's a bowl cut.
Actually it 1989. So quite a way back from 1991.
But the haircut was cool. I always wanted to get the same style. Thanks salon guy.

I just loved how I saw an undercut ("mushroom cut") in a movie from 1989.
Woah. U did very well sir. Thanks for the tutorial. Godbless

Could you do one for River's hair in "My Own Private Idaho"? I guess the modern equivalent would be Robert Pattinson's hair.
I grew up in the 80's and 90's, and I had the undercut way back then, with my hair pulled up in a pony tail.
