- Learn how to tie the Figure 8 fencing knot and then we test its strength! This knot is a key component of many fencing techniques and is essential for fencing.
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to tie the figure 8 fencing knot and then we'll strength test it to breaking point. After mastering this knot, you'll be ready to start practicing your fencing skills!

I reckon I am a knot knuffy [Yes, a new word!], and of course TH-cam now supplies an endless number of demonstrations of different knots and their applications across the world. But this is the first I have seen to incorporate coloured wire in the demonstration. So easy to follow - and no more rewinding for me. Such a simple but brilliant idea! Well done Tim.
This knot is also known as the Fishermans knot (sometimes Fishermans Bend) when tied in rope.
So it looks like the Figure-eight knot strength exceeds the recommended strain of 184 kg by a huge margin (180%), even if it's below the wire breaking strength. I can live with that. Thanks for the test!
This is very interesting - I'm a piano technician and use this knot routinely to join piano string wire, like doing break repairs, So, obviously the knot is very robust. Knot away!!
Brilliant trick! Thank you very much!
I’ll certainly use it. Thanks
Perfect. Thank you!
Great video! I'm a seasoned PHD (post hole digger) ... Cattle fence in Virginia. Tim..... I've watched your interview with Tim White, fence builder, probably 10 times. Filming a guy like that is just awesome. Thanks for the good work!
Great vid mate
very clear pattern
Tim, your knot videos have made me look like a fencing pro at the Buffalo ranch. I have your videos downloaded to my phone for reference. You made me LOVE my Hayes Chain strainer!!!!! Thanks
Ripper mate. Great stuff
thank you much appreciated 👍
Thanks for this, Tim!! :)
This is the best wire- tying video you've done so far... thanks!!! Colors really help see under /over under over... and which wire
"Science" - 😂
"that tri-pod feels like me when I go to the accountant" ... 😂😂 ... me too!!
Thanks mate. I’ve used colours before, have you seen this one? th-cam.com/video/ngWdp96iMd0/w-d-xo.html
wow sir. to illustrat more visually, you put a board behind the knots - it was superb , u made 3 illustrations to know how to put the knot , good effort and very creative u are ! you nailed that method into my memory i reckon nobody would never forget this knot-making-method once they watch this video. good teacher u are
Much appreciated. Look out for more knots like this soon.
Good morning, Tim I love science as well when it's put into practice. Excellent demo. I had finished my coffee before watching. Just in case I got excited and spilled it. Cheers, I will be sharing this video.
Who is Chris?
@@ginojaco Thanks Gino, fixed
Thanks mate. Appreciated as always!
Very interesting, and the knot is stronger than the 50-55% I'd have guessed.
Nice
this may sound crazy... i was tuning the bass strings on my old upright piano... was not paying attention and tightening the wrong string and POP broke a wire... not easy to find one bass string and did not want to order a whole set... so i found this and with GREAT effort was able to bend the wire (piano wire is high carbon 400 ksi... not easy to work with)... make this knot and put it back on and tune it...and as the Aussies say... Bob's your uncle! Thanks!
Perfect timing. Been watching a bunch of your old fencing vids as well and have done a great fix up job around the property. Thanks mate! Would love to see you do a video on setting posts - especially in very stony ground. Our place is an old river bed so we can’t just use an auger. Any tips?
I'm trying to organise a rocky fence install to video at the moment. I'll be a while I think....
@@FarmLearningTim come to nz and I’ve got all the stony ground you could hope for. Keep up the great work anyway. Love the channel.
4:15 you gave your dog a heart attack.
Haha yeah… we made up….
That's a good advert for Spiral Fast.
And the beggars don’t even sponsor me…. Sheesh…
I was pulling away from my screen and cringing as you tensioned the wire ;-). Good info. I use barbless twisted smooth wire with horses here. Not serious tensile strain, but much flexing as horses push against it. Is this knot applicable, or is there a better choice for twisted pair cable? Cheers!
I will be releasing a video on the Tex Brown shortly. That would be the knot I recommend for Barbless Barb. Great to hear you have gone away from barbed wire!
Since the break happens where the knot bends back on itself, what if you were to put something inside the bending loop to prevent the bend from getting so small? Possibly, you could put a couple extra strands of wire, such that each end coming in is like a double wire, similar to barbed wire.
Pin and loop knot coming
Of all the things I don't want to "master" fencing is pretty high on the list. Right up there with roofing and asphalt work
You poor bugger. You’ll never know the satisfaction.
@@FarmLearningTim well spoken
Might seem like a waste of time to finish off with wraps but takes bugger all time, looks neater and leaves no sharp edges and dont need to cut any wire.
He blinded me with ... dirty maths
Discombobulation is my specialty.....
"the machine comes with a safety guard... I'm just not using it." Made me laugh. You do know this is why women live longer than men.
Yeah…
"Pigtails" you say but a 69 was just meant to be when you put a 6 in one length and a 9 in the other length 😂
😂
You have Knot done wire testing before.

@@FarmLearningTim yep Tim
That is not a figure 8 knot. I learned that knot as a "fisherman's splice"
If you’re a fencer it is. If you’re a fisherman then call it what you want
Tim, dangerous hate to see you lose an eye or worse. Anytime metal is under strain you never know where it will end up. Just like your camera getting taken out. I bet you didn't want that to happen.
All good mate. I left the guard off for the camera. I was standing out of range, behind solid steel. The camera fell off because the mount failed, not through hit. Thanks for the concern.
