I agree even panel lining my gunpla seems to be a hard job but it's even worse done in a flat piece of paper no matter how much I concentrate or force my hand to stay sturdy I can never get a clean line like that 😭

Crazy how many katanas were made back then and most of them had some of the most complex designs. Crazy how humanity was always capable for most things

If they saw a rapier they would copy it 100% its longer and lighter than a katana means greater reach, polearm are more efficient than a yari or naginata, you cannot cut anyone with full armor with naginata or yari. perfect for killing people, which is the essence why weapons are made.

You see in Japan social class craftsman mostly lving in the riverside even the finest craftsmans like lets say samonji and sanjou, They are underfunded, because they are poor by nature of their social class as they are the 2nd lowest class above Merchant. But still quite impressive how they made good swords in that kind of situation.
This guy is just drawing out a blade from a single chain link which is pretty straightforward. Actual japanese sword is made from two or more layers of metal with different hardness, so combining them by hand and forging out a blade would take weeks if not months just to create a single sword
Imagine being cut with a grinder, stuck in a furnace, and then beaten repeatedly until you conform into what the person doing all of it wants to see... i really hope that chain isn't sentient

You had to watch for the flames "color" to be right for tempering, and no cutting to shape as Lapat Jani mentioned it had to be hammered into shape. That katama looks brittle for 35inches...
After all that work,why did he drill a hole through the tang at the top and make the wrap look like crap when he could have drilled it at the bottom and added a brass pommel piece and wrapped over it? A katana is held together by all the pieces fitting tightly. Some people make really nice handles by just throwing some glue on the bottom of the handle and hammering a thin brass or steel cap onto the end and it works fine actually using it in a utilitarian way for years.
You mean at 3:01 ? If you watch his fingers he's using them as a ruler/stopper against the metal. He's pinching the marker and pushing his finger against the blade as a guide. It's relatively easy to draw a straight line that way.
This is always something I wish I could do. Maybe as I get a bit older and more settled down I will check into it but I do love watching stuff like this.
haha you can learn that in a week. I smith sword and what he is doing is very easy not even smithing bdw. just get yourself a grinder and go f it. Difficult f example is fire welding. He is just grinding out a stealbar to a sword.

You might buy a sword that was once part of a suit of armor that was a handful of other swords, that were part of a battering ram that was a large pile of nails.
The first time I watched this video I was high, I mean absolutely baked, cooked, however you call it. I was absolutely mesmerized by this exquisite content, the end result was so satisfying, seeing it all come together and all your hard work make an amazing piece of work. It was powerful, seeing this amazing katana being hand crafted (especially while I was high). Keep up the great work king💪💪
That moment when you realize how much work the Japanese went through to make their Katanas. This guy has all these modern tools and he still had a lot of work to make a Katana. Now just imagine how difficult this was in the Samurai era.
Funny enough the hardest part was probably making the steel good enough to use. Japanese steel was notoriously horrible. The process of folding the steel was to remove as much impurity as they possibly could. It’s actually really interesting
he used one finger as a "ruler" that was relying on the edge of the katana itselt. Is a common technique and very basic, it looks really smoth on camera.
Dude theres still a guy in Japan who makes these the old way and its nuts. He only uses steal from a certain area in Japan, does all the forging and annealing by eye. He gets a job, locks himself away for 3 months and makes it. He's in his 80s and his 'apprentice' who's been under him for decades takes over when dies. They spend a month sharpening it, Next level bro.

@@rockycoffee i've made steel from iron chains by using a japanese resmelting technique as described in yoshindos book, but honestly i find it quite an enjoyable skill to poses, swords nowadays are somewhat useless but it pays to know how to make a decent knife or tool just by lightning some charcoal, feeding air to it, and beating the crap out of your new tool, hell i'll sometimes make tools to finish a tool 😂

Modern tools really help the process. Imagine doing this 500 years ago with hand tools only, and your sword master demands over 1000 folds into an ingot hammered out into a paperthin sheet. 😳
actually, its only 11 folds, its 2000 layers. also, assuming you are forging from the same metal, there would be no need to fold it because it is already fairly pure.

Well it sure was difficult af back then. But each sword was pricey and very durable. Alot of swords still exist today and some are even 600-700 years old.
And they even made it from two or three types of steel(shingane, kawagane, hagane) that came from a single bloom steel, which the bladesmith needs to separate. The differential tempering also produces a good temper line(hamon) which didn't succeed from this video.

Technology just makes tedious work shorter. In older days a katana probably took many months to a year to complete. That's why the samurai treasured their swords and it was a massive honor to recieve such a blade from a master craftsmen.
Well, it isn't really a "Katana", It's a replica of a Katana, a fake if you will. We'll just start out with the almost forging, he doesn't "fold" the metal, meaning that it will overall have less durability and strength than a Katana forged the correct way. His sharpening process is incredibly fast, which isn't good, and is probably rushed. He doesn't harden the Katana either, his Katana will bend VERY easily when deflecting blows/making cuts. His handle is incredibly plain, and the process is more akin to making knives than Katanas. His handle also looks incredibly weak, like the I hit someones chainmain and the wood in my handle broke, type of weak. It's a replica, nothing more
@@proctiger4891 do you know what katanas metal was folded in the past? I'm guessing you don't It's folded because the iron found in Japan is very poor quality (has a crazy amount of impurities) and the only way to get them impurities out of the metal is to fold it over and over again. But if you start with a high quality steel their is no need to fold the metal. You just need to temper the metal correctly and it would probably be just as strong as a "traditional" katana. But like you said this one was not heated correctly so will probably be weak.

The first time I watched this video I was high, I mean absolutely baked, cooked, however you call it. I was absolutely mesmerized by this exquisite content, the end result was so satisfying, seeing it all come together and all your hard work make an amazing piece of work. That moment when you realize how much work the Japanese went through to make their Katanas. This guy has all these modern tools and he still had a lot of work to make a Katana. Now just imagine how difficult this was in the Samurai era.

Funny enough the hardest part was probably making the steel good enough to use. Japanese steel was notoriously horrible. The process of folding the steel was to remove as much impurity as they possibly could. It’s actually really interesting

Dude theres still a guy in Japan who makes these the old way and its nuts. He only uses steal from a certain area in Japan, does all the forging and annealing by eye. He gets a job, locks himself away for 3 months and makes it. He's in his 80s and his 'apprentice' who's been under him for decades takes over when dies. They spend a month sharpening it, Next level bro.

@@rockycoffee i've made steel from iron chains by using a japanese resmelting technique as described in yoshindos book, but honestly i find it quite an enjoyable skill to poses, swords nowadays are somewhat useless but it pays to know how to make a decent knife or tool just by lightning some charcoal, feeding air to it, and beating the crap out of your new tool, hell i'll sometimes make tools to finish a tool 😂

Its a very nice technique yes, just use your finger as a guide on the side of the object your drawing on, and youre able to create straight lines.

Modern tools really help the process. Imagine doing this 500 years ago with hand tools only, and your sword master demands over 1000 folds into an ingot hammered out into a paperthin sheet. 😳

actually, its only 11 folds, its 2000 layers. also, assuming you are forging from the same metal, there would be no need to fold it because it is already fairly pure.

I can’t even imagine how hard it would have been for the Japanese blacksmiths making them for samurai WITHOUT tools and electricity
Well it sure was difficult af back then. But each sword was pricey and very durable.
Alot of swords still exist today and some are even 600-700 years old.
I would imagine working with stock metal instead of a rusty chain does make the task a bit easier, though.
I guess there's a reason they say that it takes 30 days to make a katana.
And they even made it from two or three types of steel(shingane, kawagane, hagane) that came from a single bloom steel, which the bladesmith needs to separate. The differential tempering also produces a good temper line(hamon) which didn't succeed from this video.

This makes me wonder how people in the past forged even better katanas with extreme precision but without the technology nowadays
Technology just makes tedious work shorter. In older days a katana probably took many months to a year to complete. That's why the samurai treasured their swords and it was a massive honor to recieve such a blade from a master craftsmen.
Well, it isn't really a "Katana", It's a replica of a Katana, a fake if you will. We'll just start out with the almost forging, he doesn't "fold" the metal, meaning that it will overall have less durability and strength than a Katana forged the correct way. His sharpening process is incredibly fast, which isn't good, and is probably rushed. He doesn't harden the Katana either, his Katana will bend VERY easily when deflecting blows/making cuts. His handle is incredibly plain, and the process is more akin to making knives than Katanas. His handle also looks incredibly weak, like the I hit someones chainmain and the wood in my handle broke, type of weak.

I'm guessing you don't
It's folded because the iron found in Japan is very poor quality (has a crazy amount of impurities)
and the only way to get them impurities out of the metal is to fold it over and over again.
But if you start with a high quality steel their is no need to fold the metal. You just need to temper the metal correctly and it would probably be just as strong as a "traditional" katana.
But like you said this one was not heated correctly so will probably be weak.
