My CD spins alright, but after a few seconds it says "The disc could not be read."
same but not for games
Does it play other game cds? If it plays nothing but it does spin, it could be the lens or the disc has a deep scratch or the lens is eventually going bad. Its cheaper to replace the lens because its only like $10.
For all of you, I first recommend adjusting the potentiometer. If that doesn't work, it's most likely because your laser has weakened and needs to be replaced
Mě tooo
Me too
Removing the switch and applying a solder blob might be time consuming, but definitely the best long term fix.
Who else is returning to his old console because of the coronavirus?
edit: my god... so many.. i wrote this half year ago lol
btw my ps2 still not working even after this video.. so.. have fun everyone
Mee to bro

Yeah me too
Yep. Gettin’ my Final Fantasy XII on!
Man y'all too!?!?! I just plugged mines in and started playing some NFS Underground 😎
You saved my ass! I thought i was being clever by glueing down the door sensor. Made the same mistake and after watching this, bought a soldering iron for £12 and did the fix. Super easy and much more stable than the straw technique. I also unscrewed the disc brake (and kept it safely somewhere) so there's no need to tape that down as it doesn't last that long. Thanks!
This better work cuz I want to be able to play grand turismo 4 with my dad again
Slavic Humor that’s what im here for
Same
i play that too
@Strange things are happening to Woody how do you know if thier double layered my slim reads some disc's and not others could this be why
Same tho
Mate we looked at your video and laughed at the dumbbell idea.Long story short we placed a dumbbell and it worked.Thank you for making my life great
Is it working right now ?
When i open ps2 or reset ps2 or put a cd, it makes a drrrrt sounds
Same with mine
mine too
Yes same sad face
@@novasclipdumb6987 did you clean the fan?
When i opens my ps2 it is only loading can anyone tell me what can i do
About weighing the lid down: you only need to do this at the very beginning, because all you need is for the console to recognise that there is indeed a readable disc inside. Once that has been established, you can remove the weight, and the game will play perfectly fine.
depends on the game entirely. other games have loading screens within the game, those wont work.
@@buggaluggachug9570 The PS2 is indeed a strange beast. Some games on my quirky PS2 slim will load and play just fine without needing to do anything with the lid at all. Others require me to push the lid down for them to load. Others still require me to push the lid down, release when the disc starts to spin and then press down again. And some are almost hopeless to get going at all. And these are all PS2 DVD games, none of them platinum. And all of them spotless, without a single smudge or scratch (I take good care of my games). I have no idea why some games are more trouble than others.
@@Gilmaris haha right. i just fixed mine. just used duct tape on the part he said!
@@buggaluggachug9570 I already did. Still I need to coax it in order to read certain games.
@@Gilmaris im sry :( ya i just ordered one from amazon and they sent it all busted and shit. like seriously wtf. but its all good. got it working.
When dealing with electronics, never use the "hope" method...can easily result in grey smoke escaping. ; )
And replacement smoke is really expensive and hard to come by. Best i have been able to source is Lucas OEM wire harness smoke. ;P
My ps2 stops reading the disc and a few seconds later it reads the disc and then stops reading and then reads the disc.
Same fam
i didn't play it for a while and it doesn't have the problem anymore.
So that's how you solve the problem?!
Minds the same
Bas van Delft I think this has happened to me before as well I used my fat Ps2 my dad got me off of EBay but recently I knocked the Graphics card loose in it so now the picture is out of wack when I use it.
Thank you so much! I hadn't used my old PS2 in years and with the help of your video it worked like new :D
An alternative to the big blob of solder would be to solder small wire to connect all 4 of those pins. You could also use lead clippings from resistors if you have any laying around. I usually don't do a solder blob only because you risk leaving a burn mark on the board.
You are amazing! We(me and my dad) opened it up and followed your instructions, after it did some attempts to read the disc but then stopped spinning again it worked flawlessly! You gave me a wonderful gaming night with my dad! Thank you!
Awesome, glad I could help!
Dude! You saved my PS2 slim! I also suck at soldering but I went for the switch removal/soldering permanent fix and it worked like a charm! I had to rework the blob of soldering about a dozen times but finally got it to work. I even got the blob to look like I knew what I was doing from the start. lol
Ur weight idea along with the breakdown of the console, which I mostly did the dusting, helped me fix my PS2 8 years later. Thank u.
Nice!
Thank you so much, it WORKED !! I bought recently used PS2 in very good condition, stored for 7 years in previous owner's closet. 2 of 6 games worked perfectly, 4 nothing - cant read the disc. Thanks to you - very easy solution :)
what worked?
Massive thank you for this video. You just helped me fix my PS2 that I thought I'd have to throw away!,
Glad I could help!
I need help for me my place station 2 repair closing not properly disc could not read my number is 7550251085, anybody service
Thanks man so helpful, I already managed to open my ps2 but those tiny safety buttons seemed to not be fully pressed so now I can fix my problem
I can’t even get into the damn thing, the screw just won’t come out. I’m about to lose my mind, I have no internet and I can’t go anywhere because the world is going to poop
Hang in there bro!
Your screws might be stripped. Did you ever get them out? There are tutorials for removing stripped screws on the internet.
I assume you were following righty tighty, lefty loosey?
Jae go to Walmart and buy the $20 variety screw pack and try all, it took me an hour even with that
Jae go to Walmart and buy the $20 variety screw pack and try all, it took me an hour even with that
@MateoThe Pro
I was on my phone using data at the time. I didn’t have internet on my PC so I couldn’t play games on there lol
Fish Bee.... You the dude. i have been trying to play FF 12 for 3 weeks now. And something as simple as putting a weight on the back of my PS2. It started. Thanks this video is awesome.
Thank you for that tip. I was thinking about a thing like this but with your video I managed to fix it in a couple of minutes.
The idea of putting something on top was actually smart, and is sounded like my ps2 was working again. I need to see the video output though!
I turned it over, and turned it back around and it worked. I could play kingdom hearts again ✊ omg I was shook
This is EXACTLY why I’m trying to fix mine 😭
Dude! Thank you brother. Bought a slim for my brothers birthday because we grew up on PS2. That was our childhood. I bought it off some website and it would on and off work, very frustrating.
Solution #3 worked for me!!!! You the man.
Nice, glad I could help!
I've found with mine it was the front switch that was the culprit. I found putting some tape under the power button board (underneath the switchboard on the plastic casing), this gave it some leverage to hit the button on startup. helped with my issue completely.
Who are seeing in 2024😂😂
Me
Who is*
I am actually, tryingvto troubleshoot my special edition silver console, still plays games but not movies
Me 😅
You rock, dude! Thanks for the video. Taping down the back button did the trick for me.
Pressure at the back worked like a charm. THANKS!😊😊😊
the tape method in step 3 seriously fixed my ps2’s reading issue. though i got super lucky those two pieces didn’t break off
I had this issue after digging out my childhood ps2 from my aunts house. I tried cleaning the laser reader, no luck. I tried to tilt the ps2 vertically and it worked perfectly fine after that. Maybe try that first before digging in just in case.
Thank you for the video, the soldering fix worked perfectly for me! :)
FANTASTIC. i fixed my father-in-law's PS2. Good, clean vid. Excellent production.
oh dude thank you so much. just tried to use my old ps2 and hadn´t played for like 6 years or more.
the trick with the tape worked well and my motor is working again.
much love
Worked first try after turning upside down ! Thank so much dude !
YESSS the third solution worked now I can play gta san andreas, juiced 2 and alot of other stuff back!
My ps2 does read some discs perfectly fine even though they have some scratches but, when I play a clean copy of Socom 1 or Gran turismo 3 the disc stops spinning occasionally
After blowing 3.14kg of dust of my ps2, I had the same issue and this fixed it. Thank you!
Nice!
I was just wondering what's going on with my ps2 slim it won't read one of my games called Pacman but will read my other games and when I put my Pacman game in a different ps2 slim it works fine
omg the weight solution worked for me. Thank you thank you thank you. I've had this ps2 since I was a kid and I didn't want to have to let it go.
My laser just comes down even when i touch its sensor . i have removed the lid off and have done as you did . But the laser still comes down with pressure . It doesnt have sensor problem nor is motor damaged . But the cd wont spin and laser comes down and makes noise . what do i do? Ihave ps2 slim
finally my problem solved..buy another one.
Bought 3. The rrod of it's time for sure
Lol
Amazing fix!!! It took all of 20 minutes to open, crush that little button & remove the pieces (quicker than de-soldering), make a solder ball to connect the points, put it back together, and -BOOM- a working ps2 slim. Such a smart & easy fix.
Why in the world did the even have that button?!?
I think its there to check when the lid is closed, to prevent people from doing disc swap tricks and other nonsense. There's probably multiple sensors that detect if the lid is closed
This helped a lot thank you. I thought I bought a fake copy of a very rare ps2 game because all my games were read except that specific one… I opened up the ps2 and taped down both black buttons in the video and it started playing ! Thank you I would be devastated if it didn’t
Nice!
Ur video really helped me out it was the only video that knew what to do and all the other videos that I watched didn't help but ur I really that u cause I thought I was gonna never play it again🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💯💯💯
I turned mine upside down and it worked! Nice one!! Thankyou.
You are the 🐐 just fixed it right now since it wasn’t workin last night Started playin Scarface !!
Nice! Glad I could help
my ps2 works sometimes n sometimes it doesn't. i can hear the game spin for like 3 seconds then it stops then i have to tap or shake the ps2 a bit sometimes that makes it play but mostly does nothing. but other times it starts with no problem so idk
Sounds like mentioned lid switch issue. Mine only is able to read DVD's not game disks, so i'l try operating switches manually to confirm and then try calibrating laser and finally replacing it if that does not work.
My ps2 slim is basically lasering a big ring around the disc?? It’s like it’s not scratched on the surface but there’s a ring around the whole disk on the other side of the plastic? And its causing the disc not to be readable!
Already got another one on the way but if you ever find a disc with a perfect ring around it and no direct scratches then don’t use more discs! Just killed alien vs predator and 4x4 evo 2!
When I press on the two switches inside and hit power, the disc will spin a bit, but then spin intermittently, and stop eventually - and it never crops up on the title screen, like the system still doesn't seem to recognize the disc (and the disc is clean and never had problems before whatsoever). What should be done?
Hey man, same issue here. The weight thing worked for a couple of years, but now it won't get past a slow rotation. Did you Find anything yet?
Yooooo awesome just fixed mine was that back switch just broke away the plastic and put some solder and it’s now working after stopping 5 years ago cheers bro
Awesome!
Solid tips, although none of them applied to my console i ended up cutting the little soring loaded disc stopper because it was creating too much friction for the disc to spin.
IT WORKED thank you so much it really helped
My PS2 just came in today and after putting 3 disc in that couldnt be read I was getting worried. Tried the first trick of flipping it upside down and it worked immediately! Genuinely, thank you so much! ❤🎮
Its not working for me, when I reset I am getting black screen when I insert cd and without CD I can see option plz help
@@gamerxnoob9913 hi
FishBell thanks man. I’ve had some issues here or there. I didn’t do much but rest my hand on it until it read the disk.
The upside down trick works best for me!!!! Appreciate it!!
Thanks buddy, you saved me a lot of heartache
I have a SCPH-75000 model, bought it in Japan back in the days and now I went to turn it on to play and I was surprised.
It gets to the system browser part but never loads, and the dots that dance in circular formation are all in one as a one dot.
This was actually really helpful, thanks very much
Thank you a lot. It took me probably like 10 minutes.
Another tip, before prying up on the part you're desoldering make sure to lightly push on the side of the part to make sure the solder is melted and the part is loose. I've ripped many pads off boards when I was just becoming an electronic tech.
What if none of these fixes work? I have tried all except #4 since the lense moves in all cases but the spindle don't. Have even changed to a new spindle and still not working
Brooo thank you.. the first step already helped me 😭
Haven’t had to do a “repair” in almost 8 years. And it makes me want to go try this again to an old one I have in a spare room put away because I didn’t think it worked, which I don’t know why I still have, like many people.
8 years of no problem, 1 hour of cursing the books I would’ve read for a couple hours in place of plying ,and only 2 seconds of swabbing the lens quickly.
So nice when suggestions work.
Everything you see in this video... I can’t stress enough, stop!!!!! Stop!
It’s amazing, maybe only mine and other people with super minor problems... 2 second non hard swipe of a clean cotton swab, q-tip to the lens and its back.
Ok, so I just bought Persona 3 (Original, in case anyone was wandering) and I put it in to my PS2 Slim, and it wont turn on. Hope this video works...
It started to work when I put weight on the top! Thank you! I now need to waist 65 hours of my life...
thank you! was able to fix using tape on the main sensor and a bit of weight on the lid. appreciate ya
Lol dude this is the sneakiest shit ever. "Oh I've never done this before, oh gee wizz look my warrantee sticker including serial is still there. NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, nothing to see here, officer." i love it
I don’t know how to get it spinning faster. I already went to settings and turned on fast spin. I’ll try turning it off though to see if that helps.
Very surprised, but this was actually it!
Thank you for the video!
Mine is all other cd is not working at all (black screen) the other one is when u progress to the next level its just black screen (when you enter the subway in the game called
EVE OF EXTINCTION)
there is a cd that is fully working (americas 10 most wanted etc)
Mine has a broken tape the orange copper tape is kinda broken but everything else works i dont know what to do 🥺how am u suppose to fix the copper coloured tape that helps in moving the cd
Thank you for this video I jus hooked up my ps2 again after thinking it was unfixable for a while jus to see if I could do something and this video really helped me now my discs load consistently. Sometimes it don’t work but for the most part it does😁
Glad I could help!
@@FishBeeProductions I do have one question what should I do if it’s reading the disc but when the game tries to load it’s a black screen
Mine playing with skipping in the intro of 2 of my 4 games and the other two start up with the intro but backstreet or freeze before the start screen first 2 ways didn't help and either did cleaning . Any ideas?
I’m glad I found this vid cause a few months back my Slim PS2 was working perfectly fine until I put my Atv Quad power racing 2 disc into my Ps2 and that’s where the Disc read errors started stupidest part about it that one of my games what was working was the Cult Classic SSX3 where I was on peak 3 with Mac Frazier and Allegra Sauvgess with no cheat codes used and I also got my first platinum medal on Much-2-Much peak 3’s Big Air event with both Mac and Allegra. But I think I have another issue involving the thing that spins the discs it seems to slow down and starts possibly rubbing on something at the front of my Slim Ps2 disc tray and also it reads some of my blue coating Discs but doesn’t start up the game takes me back to the screen with my Memory Cards on it. Also even prior to my disc read error issues some of games didn’t even work them being the Cult classics of NFSUG1 and 2 and some of the Burnout games what’s weird cuz a few years ago my Slim Ps2 loaded up Burnout Revenge perfectly fine . Also my Burnout 3 also worked but it made my Ps2 make weird sounds made the Disc scrape on the Disc tray cuz it made the disc spin really fast and I didn’t even have the disc speed on fast
My ps 2 did start working i just pressed place where i did feel the disc slow down and there came this dish sound and then it just started spinning it normaly and i could play need for speed most wanted again
When I put the disk and turn on the device, it puts me a disk image, and if I press a circle, it puts me in the browser menu and the modification of the device information, and if I press x it takes me back to the same disk list, is it the same problem?
Look if you have tried All these and it's still not working, Try putting Some oil on the long Screw thing at 6:26 As you can see on the left. This makes the cd scanner more efficient at reading discs. Since most cases are due to that. *(Can Be any type of oil)*
Holy crap putting it upside actually worked, thank you!
I can't figure this out. I've tried all the steps befor the last, and no luck. After shelling it and manually holding down the little switches, the disc spins for about half a second, then stops, then starts again, and just winds down to a stop. :/
I held my hand on top of the disc cover pushing it down lightly while I booted it up and it worked
Same with mine too. I thought it was the release catch on the front tho.
I modded my ps2 slim and it reads ps2 and other region games...but ps1 burned discs causes a goddamn clicking sound that comes from the DVD drive and the ps1 burned disc's cannot be read 80% percent of the time. Sometimes they do work so I don't even know wtf is causing this
Thanks dude
Your video saved my evening
Greetings from Germany
Awesome glad I could help!
I have a ps2 slim I just got it last year in 2018 now it's starting to read a error on my gta san andreas can I use a dry cotton swab to clean the lens because I can't survive without this game help me
Did the solder blob method as suggested put the laser in again and it was just making a noise and buzzing. The laser was also near the spindle the whole time. Tried adjusting the laser again and may have broke cable in process as the laser is doing nothing now. any suggestions?
Hey guys I lost my PS2 Slim Disc Brake Spring. Do you know where I can get a replacement spring for my PS2?
1st and 2nd options both work! Had to turn my PS2 upside down and use a 5 pound weight for extra support
Omf- You have made me the happiest girl to ever live!! I tried the tape method and it worked wonderfully! I got my ps2 for $5 at a garage sale and I always had to add weight for it to work but sometimes it didn't work. You just saved me some money! I was about to give up and buy a new one.
Awesome!
I TRY'D it TOO and it worked for me , i was so HAPPY!! Yes!
On my ps2 slim I put a game in and the it takes me back to the browser what is making it do that
Is it possible the Ps2 reads some discs while not others? Because I have two clean discs that both freeze once it asks about the memory card, yet my Ps2 can play another disc fine that has like a hundred scratches. Makes no sense.
My ps2 laser hesitantly moves away from the front of the console only, it doesn't return the light doesn't come on in the laser, but the points seem to be in great condition as well as the lid. Im very confused as to what thile issue or issues could be and would be very appreciative if i could get some sort of assistance.
Thanks so much for this helpful video!
I used dollops of hot glue applied with the ends of uncooked fettuccini noodles to hold down the switches which were handicapping my ps2! Getting the application motion right was a little difficult, not sure I recommend this method.
Hi I just got one and mine only reads BLUE DISC and not the Silver ones, how can I fix this problem???
It worked when I put the tape over the button in the back, but I noticed that the disc stops spinning on its own after a while of me pushing down the button up front. Is that normal? Also, the disc reading error still came up once I tried actually launching the game on the TV. :(
The issue with mine is that it creates a 360 degree ring around the whole disk, though it still plays them fine. But if there's a fix on that I'd love to know, because online the only thing I see is to push the laser forward or back, which seems kinda dumb since that moves around to read the disk anyway :v
So I soldered the points together, now when I push the front one down, it kills the power. Any suggestions??
Same looks like we destroyed our Ps2.
My PS2 slim couldn't read a cd and make a loud fan noise. Can you help? Thank you.
My ps2 slim reading cd cleaning but my games can not be read with it 😓 i have more 5 ps2 and they works fine with this games. It tell can not be read
Mine has a red screen with a few squares saying Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc
Does that mean the discs in buy in Japan is fked
Solid advice and really helped thank you!
My ps2 has the same problem and I used the same temporary solution by using a weight on the disc tray but that doesn't work anymore. I just now opened it up and tested if it would read the disc but the laser just moves up and down a little bit and nothing happens
I cound't get the switch to come off. I heated up the pads and nothing happened. It wouldn't come off.
