    Removing the switch and applying a solder blob might be time consuming, but definitely the best long term fix.

  • @Gilmaris
    @Gilmaris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +153

    About weighing the lid down: you only need to do this at the very beginning, because all you need is for the console to recognise that there is indeed a readable disc inside. Once that has been established, you can remove the weight, and the game will play perfectly fine.

    • @buggaluggachug9570
      @buggaluggachug9570 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      depends on the game entirely. other games have loading screens within the game, those wont work.

    • @Gilmaris
      @Gilmaris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@buggaluggachug9570 The PS2 is indeed a strange beast. Some games on my quirky PS2 slim will load and play just fine without needing to do anything with the lid at all. Others require me to push the lid down for them to load. Others still require me to push the lid down, release when the disc starts to spin and then press down again. And some are almost hopeless to get going at all. And these are all PS2 DVD games, none of them platinum. And all of them spotless, without a single smudge or scratch (I take good care of my games). I have no idea why some games are more trouble than others.

    You saved my ass! I thought i was being clever by glueing down the door sensor. Made the same mistake and after watching this, bought a soldering iron for £12 and did the fix. Super easy and much more stable than the straw technique. I also unscrewed the disc brake (and kept it safely somewhere) so there's no need to tape that down as it doesn't last that long. Thanks!

      Does it play other game cds? If it plays nothing but it does spin, it could be the lens or the disc has a deep scratch or the lens is eventually going bad. Its cheaper to replace the lens because its only like $10.

    An alternative to the big blob of solder would be to solder small wire to connect all 4 of those pins. You could also use lead clippings from resistors if you have any laying around. I usually don't do a solder blob only because you risk leaving a burn mark on the board.

    Amazing fix!!! It took all of 20 minutes to open, crush that little button & remove the pieces (quicker than de-soldering), make a solder ball to connect the points, put it back together, and -BOOM- a working ps2 slim. Such a smart & easy fix.
    Why in the world did the even have that button?!?

    Haven’t had to do a “repair” in almost 8 years. And it makes me want to go try this again to an old one I have in a spare room put away because I didn’t think it worked, which I don’t know why I still have, like many people.
    8 years of no problem, 1 hour of cursing the books I would’ve read for a couple hours in place of plying ,and only 2 seconds of swabbing the lens quickly.
    So nice when suggestions work.
    Everything you see in this video... I can’t stress enough, stop!!!!! Stop!
    It’s amazing, maybe only mine and other people with super minor problems... 2 second non hard swipe of a clean cotton swab, q-tip to the lens and its back.

    I’m glad I found this vid cause a few months back my Slim PS2 was working perfectly fine until I put my Atv Quad power racing 2 disc into my Ps2 and that’s where the Disc read errors started stupidest part about it that one of my games what was working was the Cult Classic SSX3 where I was on peak 3 with Mac Frazier and Allegra Sauvgess with no cheat codes used and I also got my first platinum medal on Much-2-Much peak 3’s Big Air event with both Mac and Allegra. But I think I have another issue involving the thing that spins the discs it seems to slow down and starts possibly rubbing on something at the front of my Slim Ps2 disc tray and also it reads some of my blue coating Discs but doesn’t start up the game takes me back to the screen with my Memory Cards on it. Also even prior to my disc read error issues some of games didn’t even work them being the Cult classics of NFSUG1 and 2 and some of the Burnout games what’s weird cuz a few years ago my Slim Ps2 loaded up Burnout Revenge perfectly fine . Also my Burnout 3 also worked but it made my Ps2 make weird sounds made the Disc scrape on the Disc tray cuz it made the disc spin really fast and I didn’t even have the disc speed on fast

    I just had this issue. Took it apart and tested to see if the disc would spin and it did. Apparantly just doing that fixed my issue when I put it back together again. Either that or because I made sure the screws for the disc cover were nice and tight so it had very little give.

    I have not played Shadow of the Colossus since I was in high school, and I have been desperately trying to get my hands on a copy because I’m broke and I don’t have the money for a PS4, plus I lost my PS2 copy years ago. So i convinced my brother to give me the old PS2, and here I am booting it up, to see if it works, so that I can buy a used old copy from eBay. Then, digging in a drawer in my parents house, I FIND MY OLD COPY- so I am ECSTATIC, I put it in the old PS2, and am thinking “finally, after a decade of waiting, I can finally play this old classic again,” and then…
    “the disc could not be read.”
    TH-cam, save me
    Update: it worked:)

    Thanks so much for this helpful video!
    I used dollops of hot glue applied with the ends of uncooked fettuccini noodles to hold down the switches which were handicapping my ps2! Getting the application motion right was a little difficult, not sure I recommend this method.

    Such a helpful video! My disk spins fine, but after a while the ps2 has a hard time reading it, and this happens with most of my games. I'm thinking it might be the laser but i'm not very good with this stuff so i'm not sure
