  • We hit the zebra migration jackpot on our wildlife photography adventure in Makgadikgadi National Park when we come across a massive herd of zebra in the East of the park.
    Makgadikgadi Pans
The Makgadikgadi Pan is a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana, is one of the largest salt flats in the world. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up tens of thousands of years ago.
    Makgadikgadi National Park
Evoking images of the world famous salt pans stretching from one side of the horizon to the other, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is one of the most unique places in Africa. Located just northeast of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and neighbouring Nxai Pan National Park, Makgadikgadi was travelled on foot centuries ago by legendary discoverer, Sir David Livingstone. Today, it is traversed by adventure-seekers wanting a change of scenery, a breath of fresh air, a destination like no other.
    Njuca Campsite
We move from the SKL campsite at Kumaga to this more remote location closer to the migration. Njuca Campsite is a pair of remote hilltop sites in the far east of the Makgadikgadi Pans section of the park. They have a neglected air but there's plenty of shade, the surrounding grasslands are attractive and the sense of isolation is palpable.
    Makgadikgadi’s Zebra Migration
Although not as famous as the Great Wildebeest Migration up in East Africa, the zebra migration is still a spectacular sight and is unique to this corner of Botswana. This particular migration, Africa’s second largest after the Serengeti migration, takes place after the December/January rains which, by February/ March, have transformed the arid expanse of the massive Makgadikgadi salt pans into a paradise of shallow streams, large pool-like puddles and vibrant green vistas.

Hahaha Thanks Kyle. Keep it in mind the next time you see zebras. We were the only ones in the park so we weren't disturbing anyone. Other travellers might not enjoy this tip too much come to think of it

Thanks Dirk. I am glad you liked it. Amazing to think of the contrast between the zebra migration here and in East Africa. We were literally the only people there. In the Serengeti I have seen videos were there are hundreds of vehicles
