    Love this group. ELO had their biggest hits in the 70's-80's & mixed modern rock pop songs with classical overtones. Jeff Lynne wrote most of their songs. They had a lot of great hits such as "Roll Over Beethoven", "Showdown", "Can't Get It Out Of My Head", "Evil Woman", "Strange Magic", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line", "Rockaria!", "Do Ya", "Turn to Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Wild West Hero", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Shine A Little Love", "Last Train To London", "Confusion", "Hold On Tight", "Twilight", "The Way Life's Meant To Be", "Here Is The News", "Ticket To The Moon" etc.

    Everyone always talks about Jeff Lynne like he was the only one in ELO. He’s a genius, no doubt, but this was a stellar *band*. This video features the classic lineup, with Bev Bevan, Richard Tandy, Kelly Groucutt (whose harmony vocals were amazing), Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell, and Melvyn Gale. This group of talented musicians created the classic ELO sound we all love, not just Jeff Lynne

    • @brettfolkerth7612
      @brettfolkerth7612 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Jeff Lynne wrote, arranged, and produced nearly every note of music that ELO recorded. Yes, everyone you listed were great musicians, but Jeff Lynne "Created" the sound, they just played it.

    • @johnhoerl7326
      @johnhoerl7326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@brettfolkerth7612 I know this has been a source of great discussion/controversy over the years, and unfortunately resulted in the estrangement of Jeff from the other band members. Jeff was the unquestioned musical leader after Roy Wood departed, and as you say was responsible for writing the lyrics and main musical elements of the songs. However, he most certainly did not write every single note for all of the other band members, who added their own flair and talent to each song. So much so, in fact, that Kelly among others wanted co-writer credit for many of the songs, which led to lengthy legal wrangling and much acrimony, sadly. Jeff also did not arrange the music by himself. The string arrangements, in particular, which put the “orchestra” in the Electric Light Orchestra during this classic period, were created by Jeff, Richard, and Louis Clark (a truly forgotten member of the ELO creative team) working together. To be clear, none of this takes away from Jeff’s genius in any way. My only point is that Jeff was not a one man show, but rather the leader of a gifted group of musicians working together to create amazing music.

    • @anthonyshats4427
      @anthonyshats4427 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for making that point

    • @Dude_Slick
      @Dude_Slick ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnhoerl7326 The other members worked for Jeff. They were all great musicians in their own right, but Jeff and ELO were one and the same. Why would he bring in people who were not capable of doing his music justice? Of course their contributions mattered, but they played what Jeff wanted. Anything they may have added, was still subject to his approval. He wasn't a one man band, because it was an orchestra and Jeff was writer and conductor. He was however a one man creative force.

    ELO was one of the bands we used to play when my unit was attached to protection duties in refugee camps when I was in the British Royal Marine Commandos. We found their music was always a amazing way to reach the refugees, especially the children, by dancing badly along to the songs. The children were always the first to show us how to dance along properly, we leant that after listening the Queen's performance during Live Aid in 1985 whilst my company was in Ethiopia.

    The distinct sound that George Harrison had during his 80s and 90s comeback was an amalgamation of his later work with the Beatles and the work of Jeff Lynne as producer (which then, of course, eventually resulted in the formation of the Traveling Wilburys).

    I saw them at the Lloyd Noble in Norman. Early 80's. Hall and Oates opened. That was a heck of of a concert. Good music. My cousin was on the floor dancing on a chair and fell off. She was fine. I was happy in the nose bleed section. Their light show was awesome.

    When my best friend and I were in high school in the mid-80s, we were driving around one eveing (because that's really the only thing there was to do if you were underage) and this song came. She started singing, at the top of her lungs, "illegal woman". I was laughing so damn hard that I had to pull the car over. She stared at me, like "what?' So I gently explained to her the correct lyrics and have proceeded to mercilessly tease her about for the last 36 years. (Don't worry, there's plenty of stuff she won't let me live down either.)

    Great song... this is from their Face the Music album... another song on that album is "Fire On High". One of my favorites by ELO. it is instrumental except for some vocals at beginning that is spoke backwards. At the time that album came out there was a big furor over secret messages put in songs backwards... there was a group that thought it was devil worship or attempts at mind control. ELO put the back masking in just to make fun of the movement...

    Jeff Lynne wrote and produced all of the songs. He is the only constant. All other members quit, retired or died.
    ELO is still active!
    Jeff Lynne is also the co-writer and co-producer for the late Roy Orbison, the late Tom Petty, Bryan Adams and many other singers. RIP Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison.
    JL co-produced the final Beatles songs.
    JL played acoustic guitar in the epic performance of My Guitar Gently Weeps where the late Prince stole the show!
    Suggested video: Tom Petty. I Won't Back Down. Guest musicians were the late George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. Ringo Starr was only in the video. He did not play in the studio.
