They were unique with their sound. Jeff Lynne was their singer, and basically all around guru. He was their producer, arranger, and wrote well over 90% of the songs. They have the distinction of having the most top 40 hits (20), without ever having a #1. Not sure what you've already reacted to, but Livin Thing, Telephone Line and Evil Woman are must listens.

ELO had a sound that transcended decades. You've done five of their songs so far (this, "Last Train to London", "Evil Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", and "Tight Rope"), all from their 70s discography... but they had some awesome 80s tunes that you should also check out. "Xanadu" (feat. Olivia Newton John), "All Over the World", "Hold On Tight", and one of my personal favorites, "Rock and Roll is King". The lead singer is the legendary Jeff Lynne, whom you've also seen as part of the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, Roy Oribson, George Harrison, and Tom Petty.

This was one of ELO's earliest hits, after Jeff Lynne's father said his music had no melody. So Lynne focused on that for the next album. Great next songs from ELO would include "Sweet Talkin' Woman," "Turn to Stone," "Don't Bring Me Down," and "Rockaria!", an out-and-out blending of rock and opera/classical.

Wait! Have they heard "Evil Woman" by ELO yet? (I do love ELO, though and have several of their albums.) That song popularized ELO in the USA, and came prior to these other songs. They'd likely love that one. However, if they are looking for smooth, beautiful, gentle and flowing music they must try "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart.

One of the reasons you guys are so popular is you are on top of your game with your choices of bands and songs to react to. ELO is another awesome band from the 70s and one of those bands that literally have well over twenty amazing songs you could listen to. I'll have to see what songs you've already reacted to but I'll add a nice ELO hits list shortly. Lead singer is the great Jeff Lynn who wrote and sang everything. At one time he was producing Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan all around the same time. This is how the Travel Wilburys were created which he was in and produced. Just a genius for sure. Thank God he started finally touring again just before Covid hit. He'll be touring again as soon as things get to normal. If you get the chance to seem him live don't miss it!! Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit!

Probably posted but the lead singer is Jeff Lynne. He was singer and guitarist with the original ELO. He later went on to re-work all of ELO's hits, where he played guitar, drums, keyboard, and bass with the help of Richard Tandy, who played keyboard for the original line-up. Lynne has also produced the Beatles, including the 'found' tape "Free As A Bird" by John Lennon after his death. Also Lynne was an integral member of the Travelling Wilburys with The Big O, George Harrison, Tom Petty, et al.

Jeff Lynne, a genius in his genre, went to classical music school. To have named his group Electric Light ORCHESTRA was not without reason. He recovered, from scholarly music, what is called the "full sound". In short, although ELO was not a symphony orchestra, Jeff Lynne arranged his musical composition so that the result sounded like the full sound of a symphony or philharmonic orchestra. Thanks to you two.

    • @longoan

Jeff Lynne didn’t go to music school. He was self taught. He doesn’t know how to read or write music - he doesn’t need to, music is in him and he is in the music. Amazing creator.

      @sagitt1856 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@longoan I thought I was specific enough, but it seems not and I apologize for that. I stated, because this is confirmed by some of his high school friends, that he had "gone" to a classical music school but in the sense of "attending" without attendance (besides, he was not registered and gave up very quickly); I did not want to suggest that he was a graduate or even that he had followed a virtuoso course. And I totally agree with your formula: "[...] music is in him and he is in the music". Sincerely.

Their whole "The Very Best of ELO" album is fantastic. It's a good sampler of their many different sounds over the years.

Speaking of floating, you should listen to "Float On" by The Floaters. It's about as floating as you could get musically. As far as ELO, I'm still waiting for "Telephone Line" and "Turn To Stone." Those are 100% bangers!!!

And it was because the song is a masterpiece.
I did love the ELO before knowing this song, but after that I was 100% sure this band will be with me forever. And it's my favorite band with The Beatles.
Please, do "All Over the World" and you will definitely love them.

Jeff Lynne is one of my top 5 singers of all time. This is 1 of my favs. Next reaction should be Sweet Talkin' Woman. You will trip on that one. The arrangement is extraordinary. It's kinda like futuristic 50's do-wop.

ELO was one of those bands that I grew up heating on the radio, but never put it together until I was older that it was the same band doing all these songs I liked. They did the music (mostly) for a much maligned movie called "Xanadu" that you should check out at some point.

Jeff Lynne is the lead singer, songwriter, producer and there is a lot of variety to ELO but all of it is excellent. He also worked with George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, The Beatles! The wistfulness of this, the rockin' "Do Ya", you've done some of their disco bangers, how about the 50's tribute "Rock And Roll Is King", "Rockaria" which is their nod to Chuck Berry and "Roll Over, Beethoven" (which they also did a cover version) and "All Over The World", 4 minutes of pure uplift.

When George Harrison was in The Traveling Wilbury’s with Jeff Lynn he reportedly said that ELO carried on the Beatles musical traditions. That concept is clearly heard on this track. ✌️

I listen to ELO a lot and they remain one of my favourite bands. Jeff Lynne is an absolute musical genius - in terms of musical ability, production, lyrics, arrangements, etc. He has a real mastership of it all and even now at the age of 74, his voice is still brilliant as you can see from recent live videos. They have a very unique sound and in terms of their overall place in music lore, I think they serve as somewhat of a bridge between The Beatles and Queen. Definitely a band worth checking out even more on your channel. This particular song is a popular one but having watched a few reactions to it on YT, not many people seem to have noted the dreamlike, ethereal quality of it all - from the more muted singing to the tone of the instruments - so was great to hear Amber note that. It's a very skillfully put together song.

1976, only once did my school put on a variety show and one act stole the show. As the curtain opened, there were nine musicians in tuxedoes with (Einstein like) white wigs. They were in a frozen position, as if they were mannequins. There was an old style coin box on a pole in front of them. A person walked across the stage and gave the band a curious look. He put a coin in the coin box and a sound effect went off like a coin dropping through a slot. Nothing happened and the person shrugged their shoulders and walked off stage. We then heard the opening bars of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (DAH DAH DAH DUMMMM). Five of the musicians kicked in, playing ELO's Roll Over Beethoven. The crowd went nuts. During the center section of the song, the two Cellists and two violin players kicked in. Dust had been placed strategically on their shoulders. As the string players went into a frenzy, a cloud of dust just consumed the stage. The audience shot to their feet and rocked out. When the song finished, the musicians went back to their frozen positions but a five minute ovation came from the audience. It was THE coolest thing I have ever seen in my life.

Yes, Jeff Lynne is Mr. ELO
You should find one from their LIVE from Wembley show
Lots of video on TH-cam from that show
Jeff recently reformed and toured ELO with a whole band of top notch musicians. They captured from their sold out Wembley show from 2018
The concert footage is absolutely beautiful and they sound so much like their original recordings. We'll worth it
Had the pleasure of seeing this tour twice. Hopefully they bring it back one more time
