She is, for me the GOAT in women's tennis. Her shots, most notably her forehand is a sight to behold. It's second to none not to mention her movement, speed, a wicked slice backhand, her serve, her icy demeanor on court and what have you...

She has always been TOPS! THE BEST! Nobody had her foot speed, the way she covered the court..her racquet head speed, needed for that serve..and just her mental toughness is why she is and will always be my all time favorite!!

For me Steffi is definitely the real GOAT. She achieved everything she had won within 17 years while Serena needed 27 years.

Winner of the golden grand slam - all 4 majors in a calendar year, AND an Olympic gold singles.
No one else has done that. Ever.
And she had won 22 grand slams before she was 30. She retired a few more weeks after her 30th birthday. If you look at Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, Roger has 20, Rafa has 22 (equal), and Novak has 24 grand slam titles. BUT, Rafa only had 14 by the time he was 30 years old, and Novak only had 12.
The only reason Rafa and Novak are even in the discussion, is that where Steffi retired after collecting so many, the guys had to keep playing to catch or pass her, for many years after. Frankly, Novak was only half way to his current 24 by the same age that Steffi had retired!
Steffi was just much more dominant.
As an aside, Monica Seles was potentially even more dominant, because she had won 8 grand slam titles as a teenager. What a sad story that was... We will never know what could have been.

In 1988 when Steffi's Golden Slam happened, Steffi got a huge power in her mind from the people in West Germany, it seems to me so. Guess what kind of power?
At that time, they were in the amazing and realistic hope for the REUNIFICATION with East Germany, you know. And they felt happy for their own country's happiness including Steffi's wins. What a pressure......NO! It was Steffi's power in her mind! I believe she is really a tender, and peace-hoping person, never forgetting other's grieves.
This is why I like Steffi "SO MUCH."
What is more, she had sad eyes when in a line judge trouble. And so did Andre Agassi. Then they married! I felt as if in a dream! Far beyond surprised. Just impressed!!! I was a fan of Andre, too. I shed tears in 1999 when he finally won French Open after his hard and long time struggle, you know. So their marriage was so special for me.......Wow......

When Steffi won the Golden Slam in October 1988 no one in Germany had any hope of reunification.
The collapse of communist East Germany in summer/fall of 1989 (and the 1990 reunification) was a black swan event nobody had expected.

Steffi sadly does not get the credit she is due. Understandably the more recent players get all the praise and are in the GOAT discussion but Steffi definitely deserves her place in the GOAT discussion. She won 22 GS in her relatively short 17year tennis career. Only player, man or women to win the Golden Slam. Only player, male or female to have won all 4 GS titles atleast 4 times on all surfaces, longest one timespan @number 1 at 186weeks, tied with Serena, overall longest weeks at number for a female at 377weeks. One of the highest career winning percentages for any male or female. GOAT stats and deserving of thr GOAT discussion

She is very private & shy person who doesn't wanted to remain in the limelight as other legends does. But outside of USA she is still consided by many to be the female GOAT but USA biased media like Sports illustrated, ESPN, tennis channel etc heavily influenced the so called ' Serena GOAT debate '. If go by stats Martina, Court, Graf or even Evert beat Serena in most categories. Yeah Serena won most slams in the open era but outside of that she didn't held any records. There is always a fair GOAT debate on big 3 because neither of them were black or American but Serena being the both hugely tipped that GOAT scale infront of her. If Serena happened to be blonde girl born in some European countries then believe me no single USA media would called her GOAT. It's now total politics.

I am sure that Steffi sometimes thinks about her former opponents.
When she thinks about Seles she most probably also thinks about how she lost her #1 ranking to the Serb due to a nasty blackmail scandal (which also cost her several slams in the early 90s).

  • @SonTimba

For me the only reason Steffi is considered is due to the unfortunate event that happened to Monica Seles. There is the GOAT, along with Serena; these are my two all time favorites…

    • @carrerau7138
      @carrerau7138 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Without the stabbing Steffi would be even more clearly the GOAT.
For instance she would most certainly have won Wimbledon 94 as well.
And beaten up Seles for sure at the USO 93 and the AO 94. And won at least 2 FOs in 93-95.

Marion Bartoli is a way better Tennis player than Steffi Graf.
Marion bartoli had belief in herself that Steffi Graff as a great tennis player doesn't have even being world no.1 to win Wimbledon.
Wimbledon is a grass court tournament and therefore amongst the medium surfaces. which means medium rallies dictated by serve and therefore less exertion of energy during a point and shorter matches in general. you get value for your shot! fat and short or tall and thin!
when you play 3 sets against 5 sets for men, it is always an advantage.
Marion Bartoli played a more strategic than a grind type of tennis in tournaments. good volleying skills as compared to Steffi Graff even in execution.
Marion Bartoli had the belief that she could win and in contrast to Steffi Graff who believed that Bartoli would wear herself down and just lose(not that they don't have to play, just that they had to hang in there long enough for her to break down). Most of them slightly underestimated what she was doing in tournaments. She was an inexperienced player by that point who had proven herself as a former top 10 player.
Her winning was really a surprise i.e out of the blue with already having made the finals twice but her consistency was questionable.
She had unique two handed forehands and backhands. That was easy to replicate and master but once mastered it was going to be lethal. That was what spectators saw in tournaments of Marion Bartoli to a great extent.
at Wimbledon 2013 she had some luck from the draw as 15th seed. she never played a top 10 player en route to her victory. the finalist she played: Venus Williams had already beaten Agnieszka Radwańska en route to the final.
Venus Williams was playing her best but was probably worn out a lot by her battles with Agnieszka Radwańska and others. Venus Williams was in the form of her life but Bartoli had the luck of the draw.
Regardless of whether your fat or not, if you make your shots even Steffi Graff may not be able to return it at Wimbledon. so if you are playing near perfection and having consistency with your shots then you are playing on a level field.
then speaking of fat, technically Marion Bartoli may be classified as fat, yet she was the most successful female tennis player.
Bartoli wasn’t really playing a specific style and really had weakness in tournaments and most of her shots had some vigor in it that Steffi Graf generally doesn't necessarily have. Here return games were spot on and had more errors and more importantly she can get Steffi Graff to errors first.
all in all, this was a victory that was easily replicable or Bartoli after this mediocre run. She had belief and luck along with inexperience that allowed her to win her only Grand Slam. Marion Bartoli was dubbed as unfit and fat. She still made it to Grand Slam finals. Even in her Wembdon win 2013 she wasn’t fit. Marion Bartoli is an inspiration.
It was really a fluke because Bartoli won by dropping sets and beat a few top 20 players along the way.
Winning by dropping a set means you played really close to perfection along with dropping the level enough that allowed anyone to comeback and take a set from you.
being fat may seem a hindrance, but is a limitation if you want it to be one.
Honestly calling her fat in tournaments is really justifiable because she wasn’t thin but fat is really appropriate.
And yes, tall and lanky players like Steffi Graf don’t always win , especially in the topsy turvy women’s tour. slightly fatter players can generate more power than extremely thin and tall players like Steffi Graff.

Graf does not have the most tournament titles, nor the most GS titles. Not the best at the AO, FO, Wim, or USO. Not the best on grass, hardcourts, clay, or carpet. Not the best winning percentage, streaks, or anything in those categories. Not the best at the tour finals. Need I go on? She does have the most weeks at number one and the most German Open titles, so there is that. Put that goat out to pasture.

And your point? Neither does Novak or Serena, yet they were thrown into the GOAT discussion? Notable records she holds include the Golden Slam, Longest streak at number 1 tied with Senera at 186weeks. Overall longest world number 1 for a female at 377 weeks, only recentlt surpassed by Novak. Only male or female to have won all 4 GS titles atleast 4 times across all surfaces. And she did that all in a shorter career of 17 years compared to Novak at 21years and Serena on 27years of playing tennis.

      - 22 slams
      - each one at least 4 times
      - at least 6 on every surface
      - at least 3 in 5 different years
      - 21 within a decade
