Hi, Damo! I was also introduced to this piece at the age of 13/14, and I'm now 62. We studied it for 'O' Level music. I still have my heavily-annotated Eulenberg score. Did you study it for 'O' level too? It is still one of my favourite pieces of music.
Not absolutely sure about the history bit - the majority of Handel's oratorios were written in the 1740s, so the implication seems to be that the concerti grossi were composed in advance for use on future occasions. Do we actually know exactly whether and if so when he used them BEFORE Walsh's 1739 publication?

The Concerto Grosso Opus 6 no. 6 in G minor is the most interesting among which Georg Friedrich Händel composed, it's wonderful!
