I knew that as soon as you tried the original screw was too big for the Noctua fans, that the Noctua screw was going to be too big for the fan mounting hole.
    I had to chuckle!

If you didn't want silent fans you could've used the warranty of course.

Yup love the lifetime warranty! HPE will not send out a replacement fan they’ll send you a whole new switch!

Impressed how much empty space there is inside that HP switch - you could probably fit 2 switches inside it :)

I was thinking something similar, that the power supply could be moved closer to the front and have a shorter switch

Brilliant scope Paul. I have a Picoscope, but its sometimes too big and clunky with the laptop. Ordering one off Amazon shortly.

Check out the Owon scope meters, they have a better display than the Hantek models. 👍

Careful, you might run out of available ports....you need another switch or two in that rack, it has the slots open....

You actually got lucky with that fan replacement hahahaha. I have a couple of 2510G-24's and one 2510-48 and the original fans make a really loud whining noise, that gets amplified by the metal body. The fans have the 3-pin BRY connectors but a standard fan wont work. Apparently the switch doesn't use the traditional tach signal from something like a pc fan to detect if the fan is working, but it's more like "if the voltage on this pin is close to 0, the fan is installed". So after accidentally burning 2 boards i just shorted the tach pin to chassis ground and now my noctua fans work without triggering the Fan fault light. Thanks HP for not using the universal pinout.

"First step..." Did an Aussie write the manual? :-)
When we were boys, my friend and I often visited a local longhaired electronics engineer for advice and parts. His greeting was: "Whatcanidoforya", and every noun that he used had adjectives prepended to it. Bad adjectives.

Not quite sure how putting in boutique priced, diarrhea colored noctua fans which have less than a third of the rated airflow and a whopping 7% of the static pressure of the originals (and a sleeve bearing vs dual ball) is considered an upgrade, but hey... not my switch and I don't have to deal with any eventual overheating problems so... eh 🤷‍♂
At least it's not at all hard to see how they're so quiet when they barely move any air even when going full tilt

Yeah CFM are important when so open most of switch you never see any radiators or dissipators on chips. So use that fan in your garage were loosing packets is not important but never use that in corporate switch

how's your experience with hp switches? i wanted to update the firmware on my old one recently and with all the company transfers all the files for mine are basically lost to time.

Nice work I do love those quiet fans.
I do like the HP lifetime warranty compared to Ubiquiti that is only one year.

Fans on core switches are usualy replaced while doing their job, that's why the fault is cleared without booting

Lots of reasons for this... multi-vendor interoperability (and often bug revelation!) is big, but also gaining experience working in the various operating systems and environments is useful. Plus, who doesn't love a chock full rack?
