Cheap Office Chairs vs. Expensive Office Chairs

  • What's the difference between a cheap office chair and an expensive one? In this video, we break down everything you need to know before deciding whether to save or splurge.
14,000 hours. If you have a full-time desk job, that’s the minimum amount of time you’ll spend sitting over the next 10 years. Add the nights you have to work late, the weekends you’re called into the office, and those unfortunate occasions you end up scarfing down lunch in front of your computer and the hour count only goes up from there.
We now know that any sustained ass-in-chair time can be detrimental to your health, but a bad chair only adds to the problem by putting you in positions that add to long-term risk. If you have a home office, finding a chair that makes your desk time more comfortable and better for your health is a worthwhile endeavor.
Be sure to check out our in-depth guide to the best office chairs, including our picks for cheap and expensive models:

You did a great job with this video with 1 caveat ....
It surprises me how many people take the time & energy to make
Excellent volume, very good presentation. If only all TH-cam video creators would get mic'd up
the way you have done, I wouldn't have to keep casting videos from my old laptop to our TV's,
    in order to hear them.
I just wanted to warn people *** NOTTT *** to buy those cheap plastic covered, faux leather, desk chairs
from Staples. They only last about 2 years before the plastic covering begins to flake off in tiny pieces
and from that point on, you will have a part time job of vacuuming that crap off your rug about 3 times
a week if you have solid rugs that will show black plastic flakes easily. I bought 3 of these chairs from
Staples and all of them have had this exact same problem. And there is no way to repair a chair
with this problem. I have placed a black shirt around the back of the chair, to try and deter some
of these fakes from falling on the rug but that is only marginally useful.
The chair you are reviewing is a completely different chair than the chairs we bought for approx $60.

I've never really rested my head on any office chair I've sat in before and frankly, i find the variant without the headrest (like the on in your video) much sleeker and cooler looking. If you guys think $200 is expensive then you haven't really researched any ergonomic office chairs. I understand that without context $200 is a lot of money, but most good quality chairs are well North of $200. Having said that, most people DO NOT need to spend that much. But if you have issues with your back, legs, etc. it's highly recommended to splurge a little. It's an investment in yourself...much like a great bed. You'll be spending 8 hrs a day in this thing....don't be cheap or it'll show up in your productivity and health.

Cheap ergonomic chairs (well 200 bucks isn't cheap at all) suck in terms of build quality when I sit in them I feel as if they will break under my weight. Lower priced Eco-leather "manager" chairs might not be "ergonomic" but at least they won't break easily. You can usually find one that fits your body decently and for 150$ is a great option in my opinion. Although expensive ergonomic mesh chairs are incredible, they are way too expensive for a chair, for common folks.

More expensive chairs are not always the best. I purchased a chair for about $170 from Office Max for my home office. The most comfortable chair I've had in years. My expensive "ergonomic" chair, provided by my employer, lacked in seat cushioning and the lumbar support was quite rigid. I found myself having to stand every 2 hours because my tailbone ached. When buying a chair comfort and quality are always first priority. The lack of moving parts also allows less opportunity for mechanisms to break. Expense and quality are not always synonymous with one another. Just look for a sturdy build and plenty of comfort.

Price. Having gone from several budget $100ish chairs to a midrange $300ish chair. I have learned not only are more expensive chairs more comfortable, but they save you money in the long run. But even my top grain leather armrests eventually started cracking and the padding is all but worthless at this point, so I think my next chair is going to be all mesh. I was originally thinking of getting a workpro from office depot since they seem to have pretty good reviews, but I am probably just going to bite the bullet and get an Aeron from Herman Miller since their build quality seems to be the stuff of legend.
If you use your chair a lot spend as much as you can afford. My experience with furniture in general is that spending less often ends up costing more.
