Giga Texas is Tesla’s sleeping giant, and having quietly outpaced Giga Berlin in development, the factory is set to make Model Y production explode higher. Elon Musk is downplaying Tesla's newest Gigafactory, which will be fit with state of the art Giga Presses, Stamping machines, and a cutting edge paint shop. Giga Texas will produce full sized Giga castings for Model Y, followed by the Cybertruck, when the 8000 ton Giga Press arrives. While the Tesla Semi will also be produces at the Austin factory, ramp up of the 4680 battery cells will be critical for its release. That said, given that Giga Nevada is the driving force of the company so far, Giga Texas will do multiple times the production when it's fully complete.

I would like to add a clarification. The terms '6000 ton gigapress' and '8000 ton gigapress' do not describe the weight of the presses, but rather the pressure they can use to inject heated aluminum alloy into molds. Higher pressure results in faster injection and better conformance of the alloy to the mold shape.
They're large presses, absolutely - but they are nothing like as massive as thousands of tons.
I was confused on this point a few months ago, so I expect others will be, too. Best to get the clarification into viewers' heads. And content creators' heads, too.

The additional Tonnage rating also supports larger tools which can make larger parts. The sub frames for the Cybertruck will be larger than Model Y and also have the capability to scale up commercial vehicles like delivery vans and similar 1 ton commercial vehicles.

    • @TheJeffcurran

@@TMIOTesla Let me get a little technical. The tonnage rating is the clamping force applied to the closing of the tool. The larger the tool, the more pressure required to inject material into the tool. More pressure requires more clamping force to ensure that material fills the larger cavity.
Giga-Presses are really no different than horizontal plastic injection molding presses. They just substitute molten aluminum for molten plastic.
I think that the most "revolutionary" aspect of these is the temperature. It takes a lot more temp to melt aluminum than it does to melt plastic. That's why the giga-presses have furnaces. With plastic injection molding we use heaters.

Our western cultures are trained to not share "patents" or add affordable versions, like better built golf carts into family versions.

Just a comment about Texas and the number of "factories" being built. When Tesla built Shanghai, they only created a single produce (may have had multiple lines). In Berlin, they are only building out 1/4 of the diamond shaped factory and only the Model Y is known to be the current product. For Texas, they are building the entire diamond shape and it is speculated that the Cybertruck will also be made in this building shortly after the Y starts production. So, assuming 2 products out of Texas, Tesla is actually building 3 major lines at the same time from what we know. A few missing pieces and a bit of speculation... the Semi is to be released in 2022 and they expect it to be mass produced in Texas. What if the Texas site was being built out for Semi at the same time or just after Cybertruck. Reason for this speculation, Tesla in Shanghai has basically used 1/4 of the space for each product but Texas is doing all 4 quadrants at once. With 1 quadrant used for battery production, they should have space for the Y, Cybertruck and Semi. This could also explain why the building is being built in such a way, Model Y space done first and then enclosed, the Cybertruck space, then battery and the finally Semi to close up the space. Building them all at near the same time may also allow for a unique layout for vehicle assembly to improve over Singapore and Berlin.

Agreed, then Start the extended part for the new 25k car coming out in 2023, 3 or 4 lines on that one, I believe. It is going to be the best selling car in the world, taking over from the MY. IMO

The semi is probably going to be 2023 to 2024 TBH. Which might be a good thing given the amount of support infrastructure that's going to need to be built to sustain them. I suspect an entirely new level of charging is going to be needed level 4 charging disappoint the 1000 kilowatt hour battery packs which will inevitably become 2000 kilowatt-hour battery packs as the needs of the industry are met

    • @MyUniversalUniversity
      @MyUniversalUniversity 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mrspeigle1 I don’t disagree with your timeline. But the misconception is that most truck drivers drive a long distance. That is not true, 80% of semi’s drive 300 miles round-trip or less. Only 20% do long haul’s. Which means that we don’t need a charging infrastructure for most vehicles. The 300 mile range will be 500 kWh or less as Tesla’s batteries are getting better and they may need less. Tesla can build out superchargers for the truck as needed. Customers will have specific destinations so Tesla just need to deal with that first.

The Austin Phase 1 will produce the Model Y and most of the parts needed inhouse like seats, drivetrain, batteries, plastics etc. In the future other productionlines will be included like model 3 or model 2. Soon they will start construction of phase 2 for Cybertruck and Semitruck IMHO. Many think that CT will be build in phase 1 but i doubt it, it will produce parts but not the final assembly.

    • @MyUniversalUniversity
      @MyUniversalUniversity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If that is the case, then the CT will not deliver until the end of 2022 or early 2023? CT will have the SS body being made somewhere else, I believe, the Rear is a casting and no paint. I believe it will be a smaller amount of room needed, the Casting is a bit bigger then the others, but not by a lot.
I think some of the CT factory is in there already, maybe at the end of Phase 1 it will be completed. Elon has been saying that some CT's would come out in 2021 for the past 6 months, if it was phase 2, he would have never said that.
I don't think M3 will be included in Phase one. The MY is gaining huge traction and M3 is being cannibalized. SUV's are what people are buying in the US. The compact is not going to start until 2023, so that make no sense that they are doing anything for that model until next year. IMO

    • @PM_82

@@MyUniversalUniversity First CT will most likely come from fremont of nevada, i guess the test setup will be there for small volume production, employees deliveries, crashtest vehicles, show room models etc, then when perfected they will design and build their main facility in austin for final production. It will be a much simpeler factory because no battery and paintshop, just a GA line and logistics area. Ground is already cleared and ready to go. My guess where now the main parking lot is located. Customer deliveries for CT is already pushed back into 2022. I do think that austin will take over M3 from fremont and they will keep some M3 there for east coast after rebuilding it with the front and rear castings. They will have to make room in fremont for the roadster and more MY for eastcoast.

I suspect Elon has some additional strategic goals for Giga Texas concerning production of batteries and utility vehicles.
Better, cheaper batteries and electric motors are needed for satellites and spacecraft, and once he gets to other planetary bodies electrically powered surface transportation and machinery will be needed. Having your own industrial base in place to develop these technologies is useful to this end, especially when it is self-supporting and makes money for other efforts. And of course ultimately he will want to not just transport products but factories to distant destinations. Experience in developing automated machinery and automated production will be needed. Similarly, having capability and experience in boring large underground tunnels could be handy too. As well being able to quickly establish inter- and intra-planetary communications by setting up a constellation of inexpensive satellites.
I think Elon has a long game plan.

I think there may be more public announcements about Giga Berlin to keep Europeans enthralled and waiting for those Berlin Model Ys. Promoting Giga Texas would only result in Osborne Effecting Model Ys made in Fremont to Americans who can already buy Teslas.
I've got a September 2020 Model Y from Fremont. The paint is so soft - not good at all. I think paint is not so much a factor of the age of the factory, but it's location. California has very strict pollution laws. I would think paint processes that can be used in Germany and maybe Texas cannot be used in California.
Production Hell 2017. Always good to bring this up. It almost killed Tesla, but they got through it. I'll bet Musk's worst sleepless nights are when he spots another 'Production Hell' rearing its ugly head - but he knows they survived 2017 when he says they were a week away from bankruptcy three times. Now he says, "Time is the only limited resource." So whatever it is, Tesla will figure it out, make it work and then make it brilliant. That they're doing more for less money might indicate they could use more engineers and people.
"The machine that builds the machine." One key reason Musk is so determined to make Tesla factories robotic, is that everywhere there are no humans the machines can simply be speeded up. (For their 4680 battery lines they're looking for engineers who have skills working with very high rotational speeds. They could perhaps make batteries 100x faster if they can just figure out how to keep them from flying apart.)
Know how they ask authors, 'What three writers would you like at a dinner party?' And they all say Dickens, Shakespeare.... Well, if you were to ask anyone who really knows: What period in the history of technology would you like to witness? The answer is obvious: Space X and Tesla right now.

I thought maybe you were responding to my usual investment confidence timeline of 5-10 years. Which I think with experience any investor will realize is a really valuable concept. Today, tomorrow the rest of the year? no clue (day traders always go broke) 5 years? 100% confidence that Tesla will be at least 7x, 10x - very high probability.
So I don't think anyone knows what Space X, Tesla or Musk will be doing in 2040-50. Neither does he - he's stated his goals and he's got a great track record. However, the next 5-10 years? Yeah - it's not even that difficult to predict. Immediate future? timelines slip. Five years? millions of cars per year, stock price >7x, probably FSD, Starlink fully operational, moon transits, probably a landing, Tesla Energy in full gear.

Great demonstration of analytical techniques, and asking proper questions an Investor who can afford not to loose, but has to wait while the obstacles and deliberate off site obstructions are dealt with. Two years after this assessment has justified 3. & Y products but left us wondering where in the expected 20 year progress measure of battery design the collective industry is at. Mixed results of course.
The general shift to EVs is probably going to choke down FUD and accelerate. Cybertruck sales are defying some expectations, price wise? If the Semi is directly related to cell development, maybe it's only halfway to the on road production target?
So new designs, if they repeat the step change of 3 to Y on a workin line, means the current August target is feasible, Elon time or no.., and the drop in employees is drastic, but those people would be great experienced contributors if hired by othe EV manufacturers, and a long-term gain to Electrification in general. This is a fraught subject particularly when UAW apparently choose confrontation over negotiating philosophies on what they think is best for Members. (We've seen that before)
Feedback mechanisms are so far reflecting the policies of conflict, apart from the IRA?, and are continuing the fuddite fundamental obstruction practices.

There is not a lot more to the battery since the cost of doing the tabless likely saves a great deal on the actual manufacturing cost vs the tab style that requires soldering the tabs. Given the real output difference figure the cost is close to being awash but the range output is going to blow the other current batteries out of the water. I can see where the legacy makers of other vehicles are going to be super battery constrained so Tesla will be producing 2 million vehicles annually, while I would be surprised to see anything close to 100000 annually by all of the other car makers combined for the next few years

Lol @ 08:00, poor tesla.... facing the risk that some people have delayed their orders to get a car from another factory. Arent the cars sold out already? Lets hope this risk materialized big time already .... and that there is some secret demand to tapp into once more vehicles are built 👍😂

No one is waiting for Texas to finish, the batteries don't make a difference to the consumer. There is huge demand in the US for the Model Y, and it is going to keep growing. The are delivering 6 to 8 weeks into the future because of the demand. 1.3 million Cybertruck on order, even if half of them go through. 2023 35k car will be the best selling model in the world be 2 ro 3 times. Check back in 2023 when Tesla is making 4 million cars worldwide. LOLOLOLOLOL

Why Tesla not completing giga Nevada ?

Giga Texas seems to be already designed to be a Tera factory. I think Tesla is bulding now only the first 10-20% OF THE WHOLE FACTORY. The rest will come in time after production starts.

I thought that as well, but the factory is going to be used for 3 levels of production. The stories are up to 25 feet tall. We will see.Elon just shared this.
