At New York City's WNYX, newly hired manager Dave Nelson has his work cut out for him. Excited about such a high-profile assignment, Dave first sets out to fire his predecessor, which station owner Jimmy James has failed to do. But once that's done, there are more challenges ahead, thanks to a staff that includes headstrong on-air personalities Bill McNeal and Catherine Duke, high-strung writer Matthew Brock, offbeat secretary Beth, imaginative and tech-savvy electrician Joe Garrelli, and Lisa Miller, a veteran producer who thinks she should be running the show. Whether fighting to ban smoking from the newsroom, struggling to allocate staff bonuses during a budget crunch, or dealing with sexual affairs in the workplace, the enthusiastic yet naïve Dave looks to hang on to his old Midwestern values as he learns to cope with the new challenges of big-city life.

This might be the strongest pilot episode I've ever seen. The shows identity is already on full display and so funny.

This has always been my favorite sitcom
First time I have every watched this, why on earth was it cancelled and why wasn't it bigger. This far better than the other crappy sitcoms out of the 90's.
It was never a ratings hit even though it had devoted fans(like myself). After Phil Hartman was killed in 1998 the show was never the same.
They had just been renewed for more seasons when Phil Hartmann died. Jon Lovitz replaced him but it wasn't same kind of show from then on. Sad really because it really was a good show. Maura Tierney went on to ER after that and also inot movies. She played the female lead in the movie Liar Liar with Jim Carrey. Interesting that they replaced both Rick with Joe Rogan and then had a different actress play Katherine Duke after this episode.
Jimmy James would be the absolute best and worst boss at the same time.
Maura Tierny was my 90s crush, even hotter in ER. Plus, I think they should bring back the sax riff. You couldn't have a sitcom without a sax riff.
I used to watch this back in the day.

Of course they would post these two days after I bought Seasons 1&2 on DVD!
