Duane Jones really humanized the character of Ben. No one could have done it better. That monologue he had where he was talking about the diner scene still gets me to this day. Rest in peace Duane. You will always be remembered. Thank you so much for doing this GrimmLife. Happy Halloween 🎃.

So true! When he describes the truck on fire racing past with dead hanging off... no need for special effects with this kind of story telling.

Romero picked him for that lead because he was the best actor of the group. Later his race became a discussion and deeper layer to the movie.

I hate that scene where he survives the night before he dies because he’s mistaken for a zombie it pissed me off then and still does I was 4 and my dad and me saw it

Night of the Living Dead is one of my favorite movies. But, I would argue that 1964's "The Last Man On Earth" was the real grandfather of modern zombie movies. The book, "I am Legend," (Richard Matheson) was also the basis for the Will Smith zombie movie of the same name.

Shoot the horror movies we see today wouldn't be around. If it wasn't for that movie it took horror to a whole nother level

The ending to "Night of the Living Dead" makes me so sad and angry. But that was the point to the film. Duane gave such a beautiful performance that still touches the lives of so many 50+ years later.

    • @JustinLodes

True. It was sad. At least in the remake he gets shot after turning into a zombie which is a better ending him

I was 11 when I first saw Night Of The Living Dead and I remember feeling so drawn in by Ben. I felt like I was him. I felt like I was in his shoes throughout the entire film once he was introduced. He had that special affect on the audience. NOTLD is watched often in my home and on every Halloween as tribute. Thank you so much for this.

Duane Jones will always be viewed as a very memorable actor. I was six years old when Night of the Living Dead came out, so my memory of him goes way back to the beginning. Rest in peace, Mr. Jones and thanks for making the film such a classic. 👍

In horror films, anyone is fair game I suppose. Even the main characters. They thought he was a zombie, he thought they were zombies. I wonder what would have happened if he'd called out for help?

Because I'm assuming Mr. Jones wanted it to be provocotive in that Did they shoot the hero Because they thought he was also a Flesh eating zombie OR did they shoot him because they seen a black man with a gun and did they even care they shot an innocent man ???

About the Romero zombie films; black men always had pivotal roles, starting with Duane in Night of the Living Dead, then Ken Foree in Dawn, after that the irreplaceable Terry Alexander in Day, Tony Todd in the remake of Night of the Living Dead (1990) and finally Ving Rhames in Dawn of the Dead remake (2004).

That first zombie you see in the cemetery, near the start of the film? I got to meet him once. His name is Bill Hinzman, and he was a heckuva nice guy in real life. Not sure if he is still living. And it was funny as hell, too. It was a Zombie Jamboree - the 25th Anniversary FanCon for the film in Pittsburgh. I was there kinda wandering around (like a zombie I guess, LOL), and I happened upon this display showing the backdrop of that scene, and a mannequin of that zombie. And there was this older gentleman standing there, kinda casual like, and being a dumbass I at first didn't realize who it was. Then he asked me if I wanted an autograph, and it dawned on me who he was. Great & funny memory. Thanks for another great vid, and as always "Happy Halloween!"

I really liked him in it, but I liked Duane Jones portrayal of 'Ben,' MORE.
