Night of the Living Dead is one of my favorite movies. But, I would argue that 1964's "The Last Man On Earth" was the real grandfather of modern zombie movies. The book, "I am Legend," (Richard Matheson) was also the basis for the Will Smith zombie movie of the same name.
The ending to "Night of the Living Dead" makes me so sad and angry. But that was the point to the film. Duane gave such a beautiful performance that still touches the lives of so many 50+ years later.
I was 11 when I first saw Night Of The Living Dead and I remember feeling so drawn in by Ben. I felt like I was him. I felt like I was in his shoes throughout the entire film once he was introduced. He had that special affect on the audience. NOTLD is watched often in my home and on every Halloween as tribute. Thank you so much for this.

My wife and I did the Weekend of the Dead in 2022, went on the filming locations tour and especially the cemetery. It was one of the highlights of my adult life.

Im 65 years old and can remember my parents taking us to the drive in to see this movie. I have 2 sisters and three brothers. We were scare out of minds. Cemeteries were off limits. May my mom and dad both rip along with mr. Jones. ❤😢

That first zombie you see in the cemetery, near the start of the film? I got to meet him once. His name is Bill Hinzman, and he was a heckuva nice guy in real life. Not sure if he is still living. And it was funny as hell, too. It was a Zombie Jamboree - the 25th Anniversary FanCon for the film in Pittsburgh. I was there kinda wandering around (like a zombie I guess, LOL), and I happened upon this display showing the backdrop of that scene, and a mannequin of that zombie. And there was this older gentleman standing there, kinda casual like, and being a dumbass I at first didn't realize who it was. Then he asked me if I wanted an autograph, and it dawned on me who he was. Great & funny memory. Thanks for another great vid, and as always "Happy Halloween!"
I actually liked HIS character MORE in the ORIGINAL Than Tony Todd's in the 1990 remake. I really liked him in it, but I liked Duane Jones portrayal of 'Ben,' MORE.

Romero picked him for that lead because he was the best actor of the group. Later his race became a discussion and deeper layer to the movie.
