    I was addicted to opiates and Adderall throughout my 20's. From Vicodin, to Suboxone, to kratom. After many attempts at quitting I will be 4 years sober this year. I have held the same perspective about my "recovery", seeing it more as a healing journey that eventually leads to a thriving life well lived. And it has. I am so grateful for what I went through, and for the darkness that had a hold of my heart and mind. But today I am free. No one can tell me different. It was refreshing hearing another sing the same tune. Thank you for sharing ❤️

      It’s so refreshing for me to hear from you as well. I was expecting a lot of hate from this video but I knew there were others out there who must have thought about it like this. So awesome to hear that you have 4 years under your belt. I hope to be there soon myself 🙏❤️

    I think once you truly DECIDE you’re done (not just decide…. but DECIDE) and you experience that "shift" that you talk about…. then there’s no going back to using. You can call it recovery. You can call it anything. It doesn’t even need a name. You just know.

    • @SmilesforMiles2024
      @SmilesforMiles2024  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I wholeheartedly agree with you. And I certainly have no problem when people refer to that as “being in recovery.” I have just found it helpful for me to think of it a little differently. Thank you. I love the distinction you made between deciding and DECIDING. That really resonates. I found that once I DECIDED, it also came along with a refocusing, a real engagement with other things that were more important to me. And with that new focus the fear I had around drugs fell away and instead I just was no longer interested in them in any way. ❤️

    Happy that you have recovered from the compulsion to use, that often comes after choosing to stop. That lingers

    • @SmilesforMiles2024
      @SmilesforMiles2024  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It definitely lingers for a quite a while. At least that was my experience. When it finally fell away it was so exciting because it was replaced with this excitement for all of the other possibilities, all of the other options I had to refocus on what really mattered to me in this life. Thank you so much for commenting 🙏🙂

    The very first paragraph of the Foreword, in the Big Book, states "recovered" twice. After 13 years now, I am recovered. It took a couple years to get that way. In fact, I rarely mention my "past" at all. I simply dont drink, and dont use drugs of any sort. A Buddhist monk also helped me early on. Good for you!

    Wise words. Recovery is possible. After recovery to a physical and mental homeostasis then continued growth through hard work patience and continual compassion towards yourself and others happens. I am so glad to have gotten 4 1/2 years of therapy, thank you Washington State. It's like what a very older wise counselor told me when I was 25 he said you guys are lucky you're here at a young age and an ability to do something about your issues work on them and be able to grow and make the changes in your life possible to have peace with yourself and others. Very very wise old Vietnam veteran who had put the time and work into his own life.

  • @tbheady73
    @tbheady73 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Totally agree about the importance of framing… it’s always made me sad to hear people describe themselves as a “chronic relapser” because that assigns ownership and identity to the relapse instead of the part of themselves pursuing sobriety. Anyway, I think you’ll find lots of folks in 12 step who use the “recovered” terminology, even the literature uses the recovered terminology. After 15 years, I’m no longer active in 12 step but still identify with being “in recovery” similar to being in remission but still not cured. The addict is still in there but it’s just feeding on a more healthy diet (only now I call it a “passion for running” lol 😂)

  • @SarahHeartzUnicorns

    • @SmilesforMiles2024
      @SmilesforMiles2024  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree. We definitely can’t undo what we saw, what we did, or what we know. It’s a huge learning experience, but that experience can make us so much more aware of so many new ways to approach our lives and our relationships with others. Thank you so much for commenting 🙏🙂

      Some do, some dont. Its more common today to have staff that assist with opioids specifically due to the increasing numbers of addicts. Having a clinic and Doctor you already get maintenance drugs from helps also, then you could possibly get a script sent while incarcerated if they stock and dispense it. I personally had to dry up in a cell cold turkey, it sucks and I dont recommend it at all.

    @cookymarie82 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I like thinking of it this way. Yeah, you might need programs and systems initially but after? I don't want to be 60 something on methadone. I don't want a lifetime of meetings and talking about how I was an active addict. I'm on drugs now & my life doesn't revolve around them that much! All posting on Facebook about how long they have off drugs - funny enough, a good percentage of those people get back on later. There's so much in life that has nothing to do with them so unless it's tied to your job, it seems so limiting to get stuck in that phase.

      I've sincerely and desperately gone to so many meetings and have been given horrible advice by "my sponsor". I had three sponsors in a row relapse - well, the second guy got a young woman pregnant and bounced - what any good man does... He's dead from an OD now. The third guy I relapsed with. He had 5 years, working the steps. Then there was the big book thumper with 20 years who blew his head off... Is that recovery? I want it to work, but I think the people that it works for probably also could've done nothing and would stop using. There's no rhyme or reason, either one stops and suffers or not. I stopped counting the days but I suffered my way through polysubstance dependence.

    This guy is a CON. He’s not in recovery or clean and sober of his own volition. He’s a convicted felon who got caught. And now he’s entertaining people with stories. He’s dangerous. He claims he could get his nursing license back if he wanted to. In some cases this is true. I certainly wouldn’t want a convicted felon taking care of anyone I love. Recovery requires courage and humility and self honesty. He’s fooling everyone especially himself. Once he’s free I’d bet anything he uses again. Don’t bother responding to my comments. I won’t ever be on this irresponsible site again. Do snark amongst yourselves.
