I think we in the west (Canada for us) have become complacent and so politically correct that it is far behind Thailand in many ways. Great video, Hua Lamphong will be missed but I suppose the new Bang Sue Grand Station demonstrates an investment in the Thai rail network, which can only be a good thing. I hope the railways of Thailand have a bright future ahead!
Hoping you may still see Hua Lamphong active (but likely will be in a reduced capacity). Bang Sue Grand Station is set to open in November. However, this is just for the 'official' / ribbon-cutting opening, not full operation. Mainly for daily operation of the Red Line from Rangsit -Bang Sue (which also opens for free public trials July 22) and the Taling Chan SRT light red line. The main old diesel trains (long distance runs) may remain for a bit at HL as they transition, so the exact transition timeline remains to be seen.

i like hua lamphong train station. also because we have always lived nearby. I do not understand why the train station does not remain as a feeder. does everything old have to go now?
Love your neighbourhood! Read they'll be adding some feeder shuttles and suggestions others can use the MRT/subway. But this won't help poorer locals who rely on the old train for inner city commutes (said to be as high as 30,000 folks). Grateful they'll be keeping her as a museum (vs the usual 'progress') but sure hope at least a few trains keep running out of HL just to keep it 'alive' so to speak. We shall see, fingers crossed.
@@SideTripLife yes hope. from bangrak with the mrt is cumbersome and too far to walk with a suitcase. it is the same with the bts. if that's gone then it's gone. mistakes are made like in Germany. and I believe that hua Lamphong will be demolished for hotels in the near future. when the new mrt line is ready in 10 years (hua Lamphong after bang sue). Thanks for the memories. You even captured my evening train to Nakhon Si Thamarrat on the board. Just another example of Bangkok aping Singapore. Out with the old in with the tasteless. Any thoughts on why Thai's do not like to travel by train? They always opt for a bus.
The proposed high speed train could apparently do the Bangkok - Chiang mai run in 3.5 hours. Of course it remains to be seen what actual speeds/time a real life operation may achieve. The original completion date was proposed for 2025 but this was before several setbacks and even project cancellation discussions. Thus, best we wait on updates. EDIT to add: the #s are: Needed daily passengers to be profitable: 50K. Projected daily: 10K. This is the 'problem' of longer distance 'destination' orientated high speed rail vs flying. Low cost flights costs similar as rail, but the flight is just over an hour. Personally? I like the 'ol clackity clack slow train, watching the scenery going by, sleeping overnight and all in all a uniquie Thailand travel experience which I wish could be kept as an option.

Sadly, in some ways yes. Particularly some expats complain and complain about Thailand's imperfections but careful what you wish for... Having said that, always enjoy visiting Singapore, just wouldn't want to live there.

Mostly for the people. Thais are overall extremely polite, respectful and very kind hearted. The amazing places and sights to see all over Thailand just add to it.

Great video. Thanks. Such a sad shame it's closing. They are in such a rush to wipe away they that they see as bad and replace it with what they see as food being modern. Everything that is charming and unique is being wipes out for "progress" That new station is an ugly souless monstrosity that could be new York, London, Paris, or anywhere. It's boring with no personality.
Thanks TWMB. The new Bang Sue Grand Station does look a bit out of a futuristic Gotham or something... but will reserve final judgement till it opens and gets 'lived in' a bit first. Considering they needed something to house 12 sets of tracks and platforms on the 2cnd floor, plus 10 sets of same for future high speed rail on the 3rd floor, being of a monstrous size was unavoidable. And again, thankfully at least beloved Hua Lamphong's slated to be preserved rather than replaced by a high-rise etc. Just hope she will be permitted to also run a few of the proposed special trains just to keep her alive so to speak, vs a static museum. So will wait and see.

It does seem though there is a drive to "modernize" in BKK with great swaths of old neighborhoods wiped out. Many of the street vendors are gone. Much of what makes bkk so unique and charming is vanishing. Sure there is a need for changes but a lot of this seems unnecessary and the cost is too high. The train station is a prime example. Here in the UK most of our stations are hundreds of years old. Take Euston for example it was built in 1836 and is still here. Nobody felt the need to knock it down or stop using it. It's been modernized and expanded but in use. The same could have been done with this station. IF they do preserve it, that's IF, that's something at least. I guess time will tell. I suppose it's hard not to be emotional about it. I have great memories of it. Only time will tell what will happen. Thanks for the reply :-)
