Easy DIY Fix For RV Drawer Bottoms

  • In this TH-cam video, we show you how we reinforced the drawer bottoms in our RV kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. So if you were wondering how to fix a drawer bottom that falls out, our DIY drawer bottom fix is easy and simple to complete.
    As you know, we tour many RVs and we find that the drawer bottom plywood in most RVs is too thin, weak, and flimsy to hold any weight in them. So when we bought our RV, one of the first things we did was to come up with a DIY solution to strengthen and reinforce all of the drawers in our camper.
    We show you the materials we used to reinforce and support our droopy drawer bottoms, the tools we needed for our easy DIY repair, how we removed the drawer guides, and how we made our saggy drawer bottoms much stronger.
    We also used our Air Compressor and a Nail Gun to make the drawer bottom repairs. Here are the links to these two products that we highly recommend you keep on board your RV too!
    ❇️ Air Compressor - VIAIR 450P-RVS (Class A Motorhome)
    The Air Compressor is not cheap but we also use it to inflate our RV tires.

    Hi Everyone,
    We hope you enjoyed our video! For the record, we love our motorhome. Yes the drawers weren't the constructed the best way possible and required a little DIY mods but that's ok. No RV is perfect and we expect to make many minor repairs along the way. Please say hello by leaving a comment below!
    Also, please feel free to ask any questions or just tell us about yourselves. We want to get to know you and share our RV experiences.

    Keeping in mind an RV on the highway is a rolling 4.0 earthquake, we bought our Grand Design trailer new in 2019 and immediately put short wood screws and washers on a bunch of the panels and drawer bottoms that are known to eventually come loose. That included the wheel skirts. So far so good 4 years later. Thanks for the great subject. Cheers from Utah

    I have made hundreds of drawers and cabinet doors, this is just not acceptable. I fully understand the cost pressure, that every manufacturer faces, but it literally takes another 30 seconds to rip another groove in the back and completely eliminate this issue. Your solution is relatively effective but you still have your fasteners under tension and the solution is always better under shear. Very good video explaining to every RV'er that solutions are available for all issues, just get creative.

    I fully understand what you are saying about the catches. We presently have a 2021 Sunseeker Classic 2860 and it has the same latches in them that you showed. However, I have had three fifth wheels and the middle one, a Coachmen Northridge had the stapled drawers. The only way I could fix the bottom droop was to glue and fasten a piece of 1/4 round molding on the inside of the drawer along the back edge. Yes, that drawere rear panel is cut to sit on top of the bottom, as the bottom is the last piece to be slid in before finishing the assembly! The manufacturers, except for the high end units, are all made fast and with simple butt joint and staple fastening. Pretty darn flimsy, but you don't see this behind the fancy fronts unless you know what to look for! Anyway, fastening the 1/4 round to the inside bottom gives the opportunity to use some flat head wood screws, which hold better than staples, or pin nails and they won't interfere with the door catches now being used. Just given as an alternative to all the work shown in the video. Nice job though.

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Art,
      I used 18 gauge 1 1/4 inch brad nails but the nail length really depends on the thickness of the wood you use to reinforce the drawer bottoms.
      Hope that helps!

    I have had this happen to several different RV's and it is a shame we pay so much for such poor quality. I am fortunate that i taught woods for 30 years and have the tools I need to rebuild the whole box. I know most of you would not be able to do this, but I would make dovetailed boxes with the grooves on all four sides. Also, replacing the bottom veneered panels with 1/4" real plywood. What was done here certainly is acceptable for a DIY fix and should last for a while.

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are all great ideas. Wouldn’t be possible to replace the bottom with thicker wood without replacing the entire drawer system. We’re hoping this works. Thanks Bill!

    Thanks for showing us how to fix draw problems.
    It looks like a simple way to reinforce weak draw bottoms.
    Besides the draws you also have other trim related problems.
    Have you talked to the manufacturer and the dealership where you bought this rig from?
    Sorry, don’t mean to mix in, I’m just curious as to what happened.

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert! You are welcome. Our bathroom door came out of the track so Mike had to fix that. We did visit the manufacturer to get some warranty work done so it's been a process! 😂

  • @billgeorge1774
    @billgeorge1774 ปีที่แล้ว

    Without going out to my Sunseeker, I can not say if the bottom sheet side and front grooves are cut to accept 1/4" or 5 mm wood. My guess, remembering from other RV's and how loose the drawer bottoms were, slightly thicker wood would work.
    Another thought on reinforcing the back edge. You could glue a length of base shoe molding, or 1/4 round molding to the back inside of the drawer , tight to the inside bottom of the drawer panel. I would secure the bottom to that molding with small #6 flat head screws rather than nails, or staples. Screws would be less likely to pull out over time.

    • @RVBlogger
      @RVBlogger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill,
      Most drawer bottoms in RVs these days have staples all along the front and back edge where the drawer bottom meets the drawer side so I don't think a thicker drawer bottom would not solve this problem.
      On our drawers we could not attach anything to the width of the drawer bottom because it would interfere with the latch mechanism...so watch out for that. I completely agree about the screws!
      Thanks very much for commenting!
      Mike

    Great repair to a disappointing problem. If they build the drawers with a dado in the front and back they wouldn't add much more weight and the drawer would be much stronger. Frustrating to see they cut corners on your new rig cabinet construction.

    I agree no RV is perfect but this is not a defect! This is a design defect where these drawers can’t possibly perform the function they are intended to do. A simple thicker bottom along with glue at the back would take care of this. Staples are only intended to hold the bottom in place while the glue dries! All of these units should be recalled as those drawers are junk!
