Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

this is so wholesome. Shane’s reaction to going outside and initially seeing nothing- “did you get me a car? you know i can’t drive, right?” turned into “is this a trap?” turned into pure amazement and joy. 🤗
i am, however, struggling to believe that Hannah hadn’t orchestrated the geese conga line though…that’s too storybook to be accidental 😂

You're right SHANE. I think one of the BIGGEST LIFE realizations I made so far is that my life is created, sidetracked, hampered, or improved by my CHOICES.
So many people blame other things when things don't go their way or praise other things when things do go their way. I believe my future is mostly determined by my CHOICES, not OTHER things, although sometimes I do get help when I need it, as I've got good karma (which I believe is also due to making good choices).
I only recently realized the seriousness and importance of making decisions and that I am truly able to create the life I want moving forward if I just pay more attention to my decisions, and make the best, right, or necessary choices required to create the future I aspire to live.
You are awesome at seeing what's possible instead of what's impossible. We all need to have that kind of drive and focus.
Sometimes it's not always easy to choose the best thing for ourselves, as doing so can require great sacrifices, which is, I believe, why so often it's easier to just operate on DEFAULT or CRUISE CONTROL.
You're a shining example to everyone of huge success despite huge obstacles. Keep on truckin'.. full speed ahead.

Unfortunately, there truly are situations where we don’t have choices. I know my life has not been created by my choices. Disabilities, illnesses, death, lack of medical care. Access to help, services, support. No advocacy when laws are broken that create barriers. No, I can assure you I didn’t choose the crisis our family is in. The trauma we are enduring. Or the circumstances it’s caused . We did NOT choose this. The idea of if one person with a disability can accomplish something
“than anyone can do anything” is a load of crap. It doesn’t work that way.
And it just makes people who are in a situation beyond their control feel even more defeated . We also have the hero self proclaimed advocates , who when we contact them for help ,or advocacy, they only do the “feel good” advocacy. There are some situations in the disability community where there are absolutely no resources, no help, no one to enforce ADA laws , address accessibility, being refused accommodations or services. There are autistic children and adults being abused in mental hospitals and mental health programs. There are families who have consequences for reporting the abuse . There are parents with disabilities who loose their children BECAUSE they have a disability someone doesn’t understand, and there is absolutely no abuse or neglect. There are parents who are begging for help from our government who are putting disabled children in jail who have had interactions with police who didn’t know how to communicate properly or understand what was a disability vs something else. There are disabled children and adults being abused while adult and child protective are clueless on how to even interact with some with disabilities they are uneducated on. Or they have public guardians abusing the disability community because of ignorance and lack of knowledge on certain disabilities. Doing things to try to fix someone because of their diagnosis,means many are being abused by people who think they can fix them . Reporting this abuse to other uneducated court systems who are behind the times and have outdated views is pointless. I can assure you , familes I know who are begging for changes DID NOT make choices for the situations they are in. It’s the ignorance, lack of knowledge on disabilities other than the feel good ones . Glamorizing disabilities when there are some where you can’t “make the best of it” or there are no means to “make the best of it “ or there are issues of abuse in the systems we have to deal with . They don’t even have laws in almost every state in the US to protect parents with disabilities.
@@tastyrecipesonabudget1689 indeed, one shoe doesn’t fit all. I have been in dire situations I didn’t choose either, so I didn't mean ALL situations are chosen. It is unrealistic to suggest that. I was relating my personal experience to what Shane said and only talking about when we have different choices, that we should make the best decision possible. We all have limitations, even us who are able-bodied, and we have to live within whatever our personal limitations are. I might not be able to fly like a bird, but I can fly. I just have to get on a plane, etc., to succeed. I've watched people like Shane succeed because they find a way to succeed no matter what obstacles are in their way. Helen Keller, Susan Boyle, and Stephen Hawking are examples of people who did the same, but there are many others. But you’re right, not everyone has choices, like when what’s personally possible for them is severely limited. But so many people do have choices, despite their limitations, yet they don’t choose or don't choose very wisely. Some will try to achieve, see all of the obstacles, and give up. Others, like Shane, find a way over, through, under, or around whatever obstacles there are. No matter what is impossible, he succeeds by focusing on what's possible, and by doing that, his example inspires many of us to do the same, to try and find a way to succeed, too, no matter how impossible things might seem.

Happy birthday Shane the big 30🍺🎉 from Santa👍✌🎅 yeah we have a family of geese that had made our yard their raising of their young for the last five years I swear it's the same pair of geese what's funny when I go to let my dog out I always say OK time to go let's go come on guy's out and they all walk to the fence and there's a hole under the fence enough for them to go under and they all go under every time I say that so I know it's the same pair of geese that's coming back every year. The baby geese are funny when you watched him.
