    Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
    Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
    Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

    Hannah your most embarrassing moment was at Carleton right? Could be unrelated but your explanation instantly triggered that obscure rumor from years ago lmao.

      you don't need to do anything unless the kid is being aggressive or cruel (not just naive, brash, etc in the sense that they're a kid and don't know any better). the disabled person is used to it and can handle it (if you mean the kid is going up to them). staring is fine for a kid-- they're just looking! if they're asking YOU questions, just answer them! it's totally normal to be curious; I'm curious when I see people with disabilities I've never seen before and I'm disabled myself!

    • @nicole3265
      @nicole3265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SpecialBlanket When I was a kid I was staring at another kid my age (who was also in the audience with us) with a disability. Their mom or caregiver came up to me and yelled at me in front of everyone which was of course embarassing. I wasn't trying to be rude, I was just curious. I wanted to tell her that but I didn't know how to stick up for myself and convey my curiosity to an adult at that age.

      Children are naturally inquisitive. Looking is ok. I've worked with many disabled that were extremely disfigured and it was quite normal for people to look. Adults and children. It's only a problem when people openly stare and or are rude. I've had to deal with that.
      I had two guys behind me in a queue saying, look at that person over there, they look like the elephant Man. I turned round and politely said, actually that is a beautiful lady and she has more love and compassion in her little finger than you do in your entire body. I was very upset inside but I had to deal with it in a way to make them think. He walked out after apologizing and left his friend behind.
      They were in there 20's.
      Should have known better.
      Still we all have to learn. Just some learn early on. We aren't all dressed in the same clothes. We come in many wonderful and beautiful packages.
      Some like trinkets and bows and some like brown paper. I'm a brown paper and a bit of ribbon. 😂

    Thank you for bringing up the “inspiration porn” topic. I have probably been guilty of this because I truly do find inspiration from people doing mundane things. I suffer from severe depression and many days even getting out of bed is a huge struggle so seeing people living their “normal” lives can be motivating for me. I hadn’t thought about it from the other perspective. I will still see things as encouraging or inspiring but I’ll definitely be more careful about voicing those things as I can now understand how they might feel for the other person.

      They are expressing their point of view, which isn’t a representation of all disabled people. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad or wrong for expressing yourself or how you feel. Inspiration is subjective, it’s not theirs to say that someone is wrong for being inspired by something. To a depressed person, someone getting out of bed could be inspirational. To someone who suffers from agoraphobia, a person walking out of their house could be inspirational. It’s very personal and makes no sense to me to try to take that away from someone.

    Yeah, disability inspiration porn makes me SO uncomfortable! It's like saying "Oh, wow. I could never." Which is totally insulting. I have experienced something similar being an adoptive parent. I adopted my son out of foster care when he was 9. Everyone tells me how that is so inspiring and what an angel I am and how they could never etc. etc. It's super uncomfortable for so many reasons. I always answer with something like "No, I'm the lucky one!" or I try to joke about it "Really, I'm just lazy and got him 50% off" (Because he was 9... half of 18.). Also, I don't consider myself a role model parent. I suppose I'd consider myself a good enough parent.. but really, there are so many things I could have done differently/better. Finally, it's frustrating because there are so many kids in foster care who need homes, and it frustrates me that more people don't adopt, and it also makes me feel guilty that I only had 1 kid and probably won't adopt another because parenting is exhausting and a lot harder than I thought (Just dropped him off at college a few weeks ago, and he's doing amazing, of course, 'cause he's a really awesome human being. No idea if he'll do his homework or whatever, but he's happy and enthusiastic, and I'm totally loving watching him turn into an incredible young man).

    The thing that I hate about the whole inspiration porn thing is when people act like it's so great and it's such a big deal when a non disabled person makes friends with or reaches out to a disabled person - So it's so special or they're a hero or something. This is especially common with autistic kids. There was an autistic kid who went on, I think, the Kathy Lee Gifford show because one of his classmates sat with him at lunch. Him and the classmate were on there and they were making such a big deal about it and treating the neurotypical kid like he's a hero. They even had a woman sing this terrible song about friendship and reaching out. It was so embarrassing for the autistic kid. They talked about it on the Howard Stern show and Howard was saying how what the neurotypical kid did, shouldn't be seen as a big deal and how they should've never put them on TV. I totally agree with him. Look up "Howard Stern autistic kid embarrassed on TV," to find what I'm talking about.

    Hannah's reaction to Shane's re-creating her choking sounds was hysterical... I watched it 3 times! I also want to comment on the conversation about "inspirational porn" which is a term I'd never heard. I don't thing I've been guilty of it in the past, but still, it was something to watch for going forward!! Hope you all have a great week!
