It may very well not be historcally accurate, but it is very thought-provoking nonetheless. The concept of humans being like caterpillars: they start out hungry, needy, crawling on their feet desperate for something higher than themselves for guidance, then they go into a state of stillness, contemplativeness, self-reflection, transformation, then they break free of their paralytic dread and rise above their more selfish and insecure instincts and learn to embrace the wider world of enlightenment and family.

I highly recommend 'Thus Spoke Zarasuthra' and 'Beyond Good and Evil'. Latter one is always the first in my favourites.
