One of the best films ever ever made, in my book at least. Have seen it a dozen of times already - and will now watch again. Romance, comedy and Englishness of a certain kind at its most entertaining. Perfectly scripted, shot and acted. Poor Julian Sands, never appeared in anything as excellent as this again.
This was one of the best films I had ever watched on TV during early 90’s in my upper elementary year. I thank you for uploading the full movie for everyone’s viewing pleasure. ❤
I adored this movie when it came out. I thought Helena Bonham Carter was amazing - incredibly talented and one of the most beautiful young women I had ever seen. I had a poster of this movie on my wall at Baxter College when I was at UNSW. Really looking forward to seeing it again - it has been literally decades. Thanks for posting. 😎
Why don't they make films like that anymore?Without shootout and action...just something pleasant that you can watch from start to finish with a smile on your face....
Thanks ! I’ve always to watch it for years. It didn’t disappoint me in any of my expectations! Beautiful movie, all the cast were amazing! Many of them so young. Really enjoyed it!
Maybe the most influencial movie on how I was experiencing LOVE and all the crazy feelings that came with it during my adolesence years. I think I was watching it more then a hundred times as a teenager..🙏❤💯💫🥰🙏
@@annapaik100 Please try to see them! Shadowlands is a true story and Anthony Hopkins is amazing in it! Hobson's Choice is charming and funny starring Charles Laughton and John Mills, directed by the great David Lean. I think it's free on TH-cam.
Watched it an extra time after the death of Maggie Smith. She is probably the real star of this movie although I like Helena Bonham Carter also very much in this movie... and the other characters.
The term 'English rose' has lost all of its original meaning. It used to refer to a delicate pink complexion, associated with fine features and blue eyes.. In other words, an Anglo-Saxon appearance. Bonham Carter is dark eyed, dark haired, strong jawed (lantern jawed) and not pale of complexion at all. She is of Jewish descent. She is a dusky and exotic looking actress. She has literally none of the physical attributes that are intended to attract the term English rose.
@@thinkingallowed7042You must be very young. She was labelled and typecast as the 'quintessential English Rose' for all of her early career to the point she got sick of it and married Tim Burton so she could break that image. Anyone familiar with 1980s and 1990s British cinema would know that. Every magazine then would call her the quintessential English Rose. She was the face of Yardley BECAUSE she had English Rose looks. Her features are all very delicate and she is anything but lantern jawed (that would be Jennifer Aniston and her jaw is very different from Helena's). Helena has a strong jaw, but a small chin. The requirements for being an English Rose are not set in stone so there's a reason that despite being a brown eyed brunette, she was constantly called that in the 80s and 90s by every magazine, publication, director, critic, etc.
Ruth Prawer Jhabvala made a stellar adaptation of Forster's novel (which has a rather messy ending.) This is the rare case when the movie is better than the book it's adapted from. A most well deserved Oscar to the screenwriter.
@@pinkpinkpink32 Cinema executes their storytelling differntly then novels, the former on images, the latter words, ie the reader imagination. Keep that in mind. A lot of new, read young scripwriters think they can do with less, much less. They're wrong.
Masterpiece! My favorite movie 🍿 it's like reading the same book. 😍🎉🎉. I can watch it on and on and on 🔥🔥🔥 Cast is brilliant❤. Julian opposite Daniel. I choosed Sands, now I have only The Great Daniel. Still it's to much🎉
Oh, what a wonderful movie! Perfect time to be seeing Dame Maggie, so young and beautiful, but sadly died only 10 days ago. 🥲 And also Dame Judi was in this movie, one of many they starred in together. The scenery, the costumes, the countryside, all amazing. Sadly, Julian Sands died so dreadfully, I wasn't aware at the time of him going missing, that it was him. I realized I had seen this movie before, but only because of the 3 men 'bathing' naked, and how funny that was 🤣🤣 But unfortunately the full, frontal nude scene was cut out😒😒 Watching from Auckland, New Zealand ❤❤
Julian Sands at 3:57 onwards. Gee he died a hideous death, so sad. This was the best movie he was in. Other good movies he was in were The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and Benediction (2021).
It was a beautiful film so well acted . Couldn’t watch the stabbing scene though. I want to escape the horrors of violence. I should have been born in that era.
Even though they are big screen actors, I found this film I M P O S S I B L Y B O R I N G, FRUSTRATING AND MONOTONOUS !! Julian Sands was the only reason for me to keep watching.
No that wasn’t the final scene, it was when the Emerson’s moved in and Freddy suggested a bathe. Perhaps there was a little too much dingly dangling of male penises in it for TH-cam.
Obviously a classical piece, I had seen it in my youth days and delightly understand more for each refreshing now, can any enlighten me why Cecil took his shoes off, at 1:30:29, in the first place?
Whoever shared this - my deepest thanks. ❤️
Is everyone watching this right now?? It's wonderful

You should watch him in Impromptu and The Killing Fields.
Agreed.Great adaptation.
@@einezcrespo2107 I was about to recommend that movie too, Julian Sands as Franz Liszt, superb acting!
An homage to Maggie Smith thank you.
First watched this when I was 16, during the break after my O-level exams. Brought back so many fond memories of that summer. Never gets old.❤
Where are you from dear?

Oh my, Julian Sands aka George, how wonderful he was. Tragically lost to us now but thank you for memories like these. RIP
I can't help feeling George Emerson would also have passed away as Julian Sands did, adventuring.

Today, Maggie Smith rest in peace!
Can't remember how many times I have watched this film and never tire of it
What a brilliant cast… and Julian Sands and Daniel Day Lewis… both very handsome!!!

Because we don't have people like that anymore.!!
Rest well, Dame Maggie Smith! She was nominated at the Oscars for her performance here.
I know Helena and Sands are fantastic but a moment please for dame maggie smith.. :)
She stole every scene she was in.
Thanks ! I’ve always to watch it for years. It didn’t disappoint me in any of my expectations! Beautiful movie, all the cast were amazing! Many of them so young. Really enjoyed it!
Merchant Ivory made some excellent films but this is the absolute best!
Howard''s End is even better. More literate. I do love this too, though.
Rest in peace Julian Sands....magnificent.....
And Dame Maggie Smith
Perfect soundtrack and the movie is sublime.
I LOVE this movie. It's one of my most favorite English movies ever. So funny.
That’s the beauty of the merchant ivory movies the characters are always “3 dimensional” - wonderful ❤
Love this era ❤ the hairstyles too such an elegant era indeed! 🎉

Should have left their future lives to the readers' imagination.
