Using the inside of dead, dry, down timber is a fantastic idea. Thanks for this video!

I need to do this. Not so much for the fire building itself.... but to learn to slow down. Take my time. And relax!

Great explanation of an invaluable skill. Once a person gets good at this, they can make a fire no matter what mother nature throws their way. I think a lot of people are going to find this very helpful. 👍👍👍

What a novel idea, using an axe to split wood. Here, I thought you had to baton it with your knife! 😊

I've seen so many YTubers do this, but you are the only one I've seen to explain it in such detail from beginning to end. Thanks!

You make really good, informative videos and can be quite an amusing fella. Thanks. So many people feel it’s hopeless to find dry tinder in the wet woods. Dan you turn bush noobs into Bush crafters

This is where the skill and practice of "whittling" comes in handy. Learn to carve and whittle a little....it will increase your dexterity to get fine shavings.
Also....gather much more than you think you need...make more shavings than you think you need. More is better in this situation.

A simple tool that can be used to make shavings quickly and easily can be found in your kitchen drawer, a potato peeler. Also, while you're in the kitchen or rummaging through your camp groceries you'll find some excellent fire starting aids: cooking oils, meat fats, oils from your tuna or sardine can or from the top of your peanut butter jar, potato chips, wax paper. Think along these lines and you will probably find many more item that can be used in small amounts to get a fire started.

Very clear & concise demo. Your videos are so encouraging. You don't need tons of "$$$ gear" or to be "Daniel Boone" (who's that?). Just, "KISS" - Keep It Simple Stup ...er...Saint ;-)
Take a break from the "rat race". Start in your yard or patio, practice a little. Then, get out there, relax, be safe, have some fun and enjoy nature! Thanks for the info.

And IF you have access to fat wood, one can use the spine on your knife and make shavings or scrapings.
