Wife here. Love The Band ! Such a talented group of musicians. Sooo many great songs . Up on Cripple creek , The Weight, Stagefright , It makes no difference , Ophelia , The Night they drove old Dixie down. Enjoy masterpieces .
Wow, I married a girl with the same first name, wife. Well actually first , middle, last, unless I was in trouble... We don't talk about those names anymore .. ..edit, i dont care where you live or stand , if The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down dont make you feel like Foghorn Leghorn at a tent revival, well .. we aren't cut the same i guess is all
Adore the Band so much. Man they were players and Richard Manuel could really sing. My favourite by the band though is It Makes No Difference with Rick Danko singing lead. Will break your heart. Version from the Last Waltz is great.
Great choice and great reaction, gentleman. This one features their “third” lead vocalist, Richard Manuel. His voice was perfect for this song. And the carnival-like organ fills from Garth Hudson make it unmistakably The Band’s work.
Garth Hudson. One of the most unique and eccentric keyboard masters that ever was. Watch him live. He literally sits in the middle of a PILE of keyboards like some mad scientist. Last I heard he was in his 90's in some nursing home.
This is a great one. Richard Manuel was the 3rd vocalist!! Middle level, Rick Danko up high, and Levon Helm down low. The secret weapon “JPJ” of the Band is Garth Hudson, the only one still alive. 3 part vocal harmonies, Robbie’s guitar, no wonder they inspired everyone. Also, the greatest “Americana” Band is actually 4 Canadians and Levon from Arkansas. Dig on that! Dylan had them back him up cause he knew how great a weapon they were for him to “plug in”. You can’t miss with anything from the first 4 albums. Love to see more.
The Band were a *huge* influence on everybody in the 70s, including SD. FUN FACT: Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs covered this song in the DUkes of September
Imagine my excitement when I saw this in my feed and audibly squeaked! The Band is fused with my soul at this point. Great reaction! This is the rabbit hole I’ve been waiting for.
The Band the only band that a genre was named around ( back then) they were a teenage band who was so good Ronnie Hawkins took them as his band , then they were great on their on then Bob Dylan asked them to be his band on his first electric tour. Their voices are so young in this recording. I’m so used to later on when they have a bit more gravel in their sound. Love love love them
What a great song to start the Holiday Weekend!! Such a great blend of lyrics and music nothing like The Band! Thanks Guys Have A Great Holiday Weekend!!
Great observation about how the opening does kind of sound like Steely dan. Man I love The Band so much. It just feels so good. And they had so many classic songs. People love to cover their songs at jams and parties and cookouts and bonfires and so forth. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is renowned for that. And it's such a good song.
Fellas ... ABOUT TIME you found your way to THE Band. Astute ear on the "Steely Dan" intro, although a few years before SD ... Lastly ... PLEASE make "It Makes No Difference" your next dip in this pond. The guitar work is especially strong (Robby), great lyrics, great delivery, tight (but loose) overall structure. Right up your alley.
This stuff is what the musicians of the day listened to on their time. Hell, Clapton wanted to join the group! Took music in a different direction! Gold standard!
I loved this reaction. I saw The Band numerous times and they kicked ass every time. 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' is a monumental song you might like. 'Up On Cripple Creek' is a very funny song to check out. Cheers guys.
Live version of “King Harvest (has surely come)”. An amazing song written about the 1930s depression. The live version has horns and really makes the song.
My first record was The Band Rag Mama Rag as a single it was given to me, It wasn''t till years later that I appreciated there music because of Bob Dylan.... Great Band ...
Go out yonder,, peace in the valley. Come downtown to the rumble in the alley... Saw the Dead, the Band, and the Allman Brothers at Watkins Glen in 1973..600,000 people...awesome...thanks guys. PS The Band was the best performance that day IMHO...
The Dead opened Sunday in sunshine as I recall + I loved it. The Band was great as well + toughed it out during the downpour, poor Garth. Saturday was outstanding @ Watkins Glen.
Well gd this is a delight!! 😀 I haven't heard this Band song before - and that totally sounded like Steely there. Garth and that organ, man... Thanks so much for this one!!
NOBODY sounded like The Band. They had amazing influences and became heavy hitters because every major musician in the scene loved them..for good reason!
Now here's a Band that you definitely should watch their movie The last waltz....it's their final live proformance with all kinds of crazy guest appearances by Bob Dylan, the staple sisters and many Many more
The Band was so good. They all had soulful voices, four of them Rick, Levon, Richard and occasionally Robbie. Garth was the only one who didn't sing. He's the only one remaining. His parents thought rock was sketchy. So he arranged to give music lessons to the other 4! So he could spin it like he was an instructor instead of a rock musician. At the beginning. Then they had success, so it was all good. They hit Big with their first album in '68. And of course their concert film around '78
La and Che, you opened up a door to a deep rabbit hole!! It's an excellent band with 5 excellent musicians!! You should also consider watching Were Once Brothers. Writing by Robbie Robertson. Thanks for keeping my Memorial weekend going strong ! La and Che, I hope that you and everyone that watches has a great holiday weekend!! And as always, excellent reaction fellas 👏👏❤❤😊😊
Normally I say that the best version of a song to hear is the studio version for a first listen, but in the case of The Band, the best versions of most of their songs are from The Last Waltz movie soundtrack. This song included. The only one that is not worth bothering with is the song "The Weight" with the Staple Singers. There is a live version from The Last Waltz of The Band playing the song by themselves on stage though. That's the one to find and listen to.
Grew up in the town where the house was where they recorded the Big Pink record. I played baseball with and against the bassists, Rick Danko's, stepson. Used to see him at games often.
The Band is one of my favorites because their music, at the time they were writing, sounded like nobody else. It makes no difference is one of my favorite songs of all time! La & Chi - you gotta do more Band and do It makes no difference from The Last Waltz - the uncut version! It’s great!
@PuckTH-cam .. and Bob Dylan's first backing band during his infamous 1966 world tour 😎 ps: they played on Dylan's underrated Planet Waves album in... 74?
Hope you guys make it checking out the old bootlegged recordings these guys recorded with Bob Dylan in the basement of an old rural NY house, the said recordings, The Basement Tapes. It’s some of the best and most interesting music you’ll ever hear. And the Steely Dan mention, hit the nail on the head.
This album was produced by the great Todd Rundgren, and he was about 22 years at the time. Without Todd Rundgren’s 50 years of work in music (songwriting, singing, multi-instrumentalist, a member of Utopia, a member of Ringo’s All Star Band). Yes. Genius! This was pre-rap by a few decades.
From their most underrated album. I play it more often than the others. Every track is a gem. I especially love The Rumor. I totally agree with the Steely Dan comparison. If the Dan boys came from the boonies instead of New York, maybe, and didn't listen to bebop
So many good songs by this incredible group. A few of my favorites are the soulful Don’t Do It from the live Rock of Ages album (you’ll love that one - written by Motown legends Holland Dozier Holland, by the way), the gorgeous I Shall Be Released from the live Before the Flood album with Bob Dylan and Acadian Driftwood from the later Northern Lights-Southern Cross album. Check ‘em out, boys!
I totally heard the Steely Dan once you mentioned it! I'm not too familiar with The Band, I know who they are and Robbie Robertson is very famous, but had never heard this song. Thanks for the introduction, I really love this song.
Loved Levon Helm.. He turned out to be a pretty good actor as well, turning up in many movies with that perfect southern accent and delivery. The Band was just a good combination of quality musicians and some very original writing... Good choice guys... This song always reminds me of Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well...
The Band is the ONLY Band that Eric Clapton really wanted to be a part of but wasn't. Their music - even though most of the members are Canadian - is the literal melting pot of Americana: bluegrass, country, folk & Rock w/ a little pop sensibilities thrown in - GREAT HOOKS. So many great tunes .. you guys should do 'Ophelia' next but the LIVE version from The Last Waltz (seminal Rock documentary directed by Martin Scorsese) #rockOn :)
The song is about ending up on Skid Row. Written by Robbie Robertson, CCR, etc.. This particular album was fraught with disagreements about direction and tone. But it was magical. What a great song thanks for playing it.
“It makes no difference” from the last Waltz is a must listen.
Garth’s sax at the end is so beautiful.
This
👍
I 2nd this!
I actually much prefer the studio version from "Northern Lights - Southern Cross". That one will forever be part of the playlist of my life.
One of the greatest and most influential rock bands of all time.
Invented Americana . Great antidote to overblown prog rock.
The Band was chock full of awesome talent at every corner.
Garth Hudson on the organ … a master of the keyboard.
Almost sounds proto new wave
And the saxaphone, clarinet, accordian
Also, he’s the only surviving member of the original lineup.
@@stillstanding8286 That’s true.. I hadn’t thought about that…
Wife here. Love The Band ! Such a talented group of musicians. Sooo many great songs . Up on Cripple creek , The Weight, Stagefright , It makes no difference , Ophelia , The Night they drove old Dixie down. Enjoy masterpieces .

Very nice sounds amazing thanks guys
I heavily suggest It Makes No Difference (longer uncut/unedited version) & The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down both from the Last Waltz
The organ stole the show! That's some foot tapping music and catchy lyrics.
love watching you guys groove to the music...
What a band !
Great choice and great reaction, gentleman. This one features their “third” lead vocalist, Richard Manuel. His voice was perfect for this song. And the carnival-like organ fills from Garth Hudson make it unmistakably The Band’s work.
Sorry, meant “gentlemen”. Have a great weekend.
Life is a Carnival....😉
@@lisarainbow9703Two Bits a Shot (1970s prices; quite a bit more now)
Whispering Pines by Richard will make you cry.
*He was the first lead vocalist actually
Out of all the commentators put there you guys are the best. Intelligent reactions with music knowledge. Thank you for doing what you do.
My Southern Ontario boys! Love this song! (SOB’s)
Even the Notorious Big was dancing on your shirt! lol
Cheers!
You are so right on the Steeley Dan intro.
Garth Hudson. One of the most unique and eccentric keyboard masters that ever was. Watch him live. He literally sits in the middle of a PILE of keyboards like some mad scientist. Last I heard he was in his 90's in some nursing home.
In his late eighties. Only one left. Miss them all, especially Rick and Robbie.
Definitely should check out the Last Waltz
Love it! The Band's song Chest Fever is another great one of their songs with Garth amazing on the organ.
I love the Band, but the greatest Americana band is Grateful Dead. No contest.
Love this album
Interesting choice. Not too many reactors are likely to do this one. Definitely a fan of The Band. Unique group.
When The Band un-retired in the 90s, i was at several shows dancing my a off ... they are just that good.
"The best band in the history of the universe" -George Harrison.
This is a great rabbit hole to enter. The band is special, beautiful music
LOVE THE BAND!!!! La, their drummer is a great vocalist. He also played Sissy Spacek's father in Coal Miner's Daughter.
The BEST band name ever! A favorite, for sure.
The Band were a *huge* influence on everybody in the 70s, including SD.
FUN FACT: Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs covered this song in the DUkes of September
The band is THE BAND
Imagine my excitement when I saw this in my feed and audibly squeaked! The Band is fused with my soul at this point. Great reaction! This is the rabbit hole I’ve been waiting for.
It's the joy that raises this channel so high.
The Band has no bad songs period.
Do more of The Band! So many great live videos available!
The Band the only band that a genre was named around ( back then) they were a teenage band who was so good Ronnie Hawkins took them as his band , then they were great on their on then Bob Dylan asked them to be his band on his first electric tour. The Band 🎼🎹🎼🎸🥁. Nuff Said
So many great songs by The Band. Try “Chest Fever” next.
What a great song to start the Holiday Weekend!! Such a great blend of lyrics and music nothing like The Band! Thanks Guys Have A Great Holiday Weekend!!
These guys can play anything. Check out their song Life Is A Carnival with Allen Toussaint.
Love the Band, you guys have to do The Last Waltz.
love love love this tune
Great observation about how the opening does kind of sound like Steely dan. Man I love The Band so much. It just feels so good. And they had so many classic songs. People love to cover their songs at jams and parties and cookouts and bonfires and so forth. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is renowned for that. And it's such a good song.
These guys made "rock music" in a very unlocked way, unusual instrumentation, country beats, old timey feel
You guys make my day. Love listening and watching with you talk and appreciate music. I usually learn a thing or two at the same time
Stage Fright is a great album.
Fellas ... ABOUT TIME you found your way to THE Band.

True I was there also … heavy rain during the band set
I miss The Glen, beautiful country

The band is awesome......"Long black veil" is a must listen.....thier version is the best I've ever heard
Yes, Rick kills it in "Long Black Veil", but then Rick almost always kills it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE The Band!!!!
Well that got me moving this morning, I enjoyed it very much. Thank you both and good morning.
I love the way the drums are mixed on all of these old recordings
That analog richness
Excellent reaction my bruthas...
This Song and this LP album came out in 1970 and I have it in my Vinyl Record Collection in Mint condition! 🎸🥁
Great reaction! A rollicking classic to start the day. I loved your Steely Dan insight, I hear it too!

I love that story about Garth. You can totally see it.
So happy you hit this. Great start to the weekend! Cheers Fellas.
It’s got that subtle giddyup
its like I m rolling home after the bar
'Chest Fever' is a great one from their debut album. Also, 'This Wheel's on Fire' and 'I Shall be Released' too!
I love you guys so much. You teach me about my own music! Steely Dan omg you are right. I love the connection to rap lyrics too. Rock On
La and Che, you opened up a door to a deep rabbit hole!! It's an excellent band with 5 excellent musicians!! You should also consider watching Were Once Brothers. Writing by Robbie Robertson. Good catch on the Steely Dan vibe, I've listened toi both for 50 years and never noticed it, but you're spot on!!!!! What a twist!
I would love It if y’all reacted to It Makes No Difference (Live at The Last Waltz). such a talented group
A great band rocking along together is bliss. That's why I still love watching live pub music.
You guys are truly insightful in your reactions. That Steely Dan intro call out was 💯
Rag Mama Rag is a great Band tune that doesn't get to reacted to as much as it should.
Great reaction to one of my favorite bands!

The Band is one of my favorites because their music, at the time they were writing, sounded like nobody else. It makes no difference is one of my favorite songs of all time!
La & Chi - you gotta do more Band and do It makes no difference from The Last Waltz - the uncut version! It’s great!
Everything by the Band is good!
More like Steely Dan sounding like The Band. These guys had been together for a decade by the time Steely Dan were formed.
@PuckTH-cam Yes, drummer Levon was with Ronnie from 1959, and the others joined over the next few years.
@PuckTH-cam
.. and Bob Dylan's first backing band during his infamous 1966 world
tour 😎
ps: they played on Dylan's underrated Planet Waves album in... 74?

It’s some of the best and most interesting music you’ll ever hear. And the Steely Dan mention, hit the nail on the head.
I love The Basement Tapes. When I need a musical reset that’s one of the main albums are turn to.
I had to laugh when he said he was going down to the water and he just assumed we thought he was jumping in.
Richard sings this one. Garth on organ extraordinaire. The Band came before Steely Dan so the intro is all them.
Check out "Daniel and the Sacred Harp" from the same album (Stage Fright).
Strawberry Wine is another good one. The whole Last Waltz live performance is worth a review.
Great song, but y’all should do the live one from The Last Waltz movie
This album was produced by the great Todd Rundgren, and he was about 22 years at the time. Without Todd Rundgren’s 50 years of work in music (songwriting, singing, multi-instrumentalist, a member of Utopia, a member of Ringo’s All Star Band). Yes. Genius! This was pre-rap by a few decades.

Also from the last waltz a great version of Helpless with Neil Young with Joni Mitchell on back up vocals
Greetings from the Great White North 🇨🇦 Another great reaction to classic Canadian rock gentlemen keep up the great work 👍
This is leading straight to ‘the last waltz’. Neil Young’s performance of ‘helpless’ and dr. John doing ‘such a night’ are personal favorites.
I totally heard the Steely Dan once you mentioned it! I'm not too familiar with The Band, I know who they are and Robbie Robertson is very famous, but had never heard this song. Thanks for the introduction, I really love this song.
