    I still struggle with stropping and enjoy seeing all the various versions of how-to. No doubt I’m getting better when I started using less pressure. But I love that tip on what you did on the back side for your v-tool and gouge. I’m gonna give that a go.

    Hi Johnny! I finally got the time to watch your stropping video. I really enjoyed your simple and clear explanation.
    I don’t know how you sharpen a gauge, but I start with something like a 200 grit sandpaper and work each blade through to a 1500 grit paper. Taking it slow and easy. I don’t have the room for an electric blade sharpener. Thanks Brother!

    I found this so much more helpful than other videos I've watched. I see now I was doing it all wrong and that's why my knifes were actually getting duller! How often, or do you have to, replace the leather?

    I copied your grinder build and love it just put a razor edge on a knife I've built myself 2 years and it's sharper then ever.anf It was dangerous scary before but improved.thanks for your video.
    I've a piece of deer skin I will test might be flexible for tiny gouges in tighter places.
    I already built a board much as yourself.thanks Johnny

    Hi Johnny , I’m a new subscriber to your channel and get a lot from each video , I’d just like to ask about the strop ! I have made my own too very like yours and it’s now quite dark now almost black and very shiny!! Should I remove the black shiny surface or just putting compound on top of it? If it’s best removed how would you take it off??

    • @JohnnyTheLayton
      @JohnnyTheLayton  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@trevsutton8185I heated it up with a heat gun every 3-4 months and scraped it off. But some folks leave it on there and never remove it. Your miles may vary. I didn't address it in the video because opinions on it differ so wildly, and I never really noticed a problem when I left it on for a while.

    How often do you need to refresh the compound? Is there a good way to tell when you need more?

    • @JohnnyTheLayton
      @JohnnyTheLayton  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @klconlin It's a balance kind of skill that just needs to be developed. An easy way to tell is if you see the strop getting blacker from use, but after a time it'll just be black and you won't be able to tell anymore by that method.
      Honestly, I've been using the same stick of compound for over a year, and I'm about halfway through it (i carve at least an hour a day). I probably overused the compoundif I'm honest with myself. A stick is gonna last a LONG time.
