How To Read & Understand Wood Grain
Grain direction is fundamental to carving success, if you get this down you'll only have to focus on learning how to find shapes in wood. While this is a relatively easy subject i find WAY too many of us, and myself included, just assume they already know and don't bother to try and determine if they know enough. Don't be like me, watch this video and learn from my mistakes.
Some links mentioned in the video if you want to deep dive.

    I’ve got a question. I’ve got a jig and cut my basswood blocks into triangles on my bandsaw. Looking at the top or bottom of the block, how do I determine which corner to cut. If there’s any way you could show a picture of which way to cut the corner I would really appreciate it. Thanks for the videos. Great content and enthusiasm!

    • @JohnnyTheLayton
      @JohnnyTheLayton วันที่ผ่านมา

      Trying to understand what you mean exactly. If you have a 4 inch long block of basswood, that's say 1.5inches by 1.5 inches. And you cut it diagonally down the middle. The grain would be running vertically. You can treat either end as the top or bottom. So long as you orient your carving as the grain direction being vertical, you should be golden. Does that help?

    Good job nice handle! 😃 Another way you could do it is to use a liner about the same width as the blade and just cut the shape of the tang in it and sandwich the liner and blade without having to chisel out the wood. Personally I use one piece of wood and drill a little slot in the end like how the original handle was fitted. It all does the same job in the end.

    • @JohnnyTheLayton

      My first Etsy sale was a tiny little "frightened Ghoul" I posted him to social media as if he was an orphan ghoul looking for a good home. I wrote a cute little paragraph about his likes and dislikes. He sold 30 minutes later. Go the extra mile is the only advice i can offer. That first sale was a $20 carving on sale for 30% off. I didn't make much money, the goal at that point was to make a sale. Then to keep making sales. 1 sale turns into 2. Turn two into 5, then work on getting to 10.
