- For my birthday I treated myself to an ultra that I'd had my eye on (as I really wanted to run in the Peak District) but that was a bit too expensive for me at £90 for 50km. It was the Ultra X England 50 which was a circular from Edale taking in some iconic climbs and ridge lines.
Having never run in the Peak District I was super excited about this race however I ran with a really nasty viral infection that I didn't know I had. I didn't really get out of bed for the 10 days after this race, I was really, really poorly! I'm pleased in retrospect as my balance was shocking in this race and I kept tripping over my feet repeatedly which was a really strange experience on the day. At least now I understand why I was feeling so weird!
The route was brilliant and remarkably taped with almost no navigation needed and the Peak District was stunning. I did enjoy my race experience but wouldn't pay this amount for a 50km race again as I left feeling a bit ripped off. £125 for a 50km with parking and a T-shirt prices runners like me out of the market. Still... I'm pleased I ran the race because I met so many incredible people.
I always love new experiences, especially when they involve running so no regrets!
Happy running,
Nicola :)
Awesome effort & video! Interesting to see the course changes since I did it 🙈 Shame about the snack situation 😉 🍫🍪 I’m still mind blown at the picnic situation at “Rat Races” .. I basically had a 3 course meal at every checkpoint 😍🤣
Thanks 🤗 See I'm used to races where it's more of a moving picnic too so I was like 😳😢😔 where's dinner?! 😜🤣 I did hear they were thinking of changing this and providing checkpoint food... I'm not sure if they did or not though 🤷🏻♀️
Nice scenery and commentary......those days when you're not feeling it but get it done are special in their own way!
Thank you, I guess you're right as that's when you really achieve as they're the really hard days 🤗
Thank you for sharing, this will be my first ultra this year, great to get an idea of what to expect! Thank you and well done!
You're more than welcome, pleased you found it helpful. I think they've changed it so the checkpoints have fuel now 🎉🎉🎉 Hope you have the best race 😃 it's a stunning route, fingers crossed for the weather 🤞
Oh wow fantastic running with virus. It really knocked me back! Looked stunning there. Went with the scouts and hated it - was cold and wet! Thanks for sharing.
Oh bless you! I do keep thinking I will go back this summer on a warm and beautiful day... Maybe Al and I can run and camp or something 😃
WMN Summer Camp 2023 😍
@@barnabynorman157 ooooh now that would be good! 😃
Well done. Great run!! I use the Tailwind Powder...my favourite being the Raspberry Caffeine Buzz.
Ooh now that sounds like one I should try! Raspberry is one of my favourite flavours 😃
Well done , bit of a rip off , wouldnt have killed them to supply a few wispas and lucozade sport drinks lol Hope you and Poppy are feeling better , love to see a new Nicola video 😀
I agree for £90 some watermelon and crisps and chocolate, fizzy sugary drinks as well are a must. Got a trail marathon next week and I know there is beans and jacket at the end plus hot cross buns and sausage rolls etc during the race. Step up supply this stuff guys.
Thank you 🤗 Oh my goodness imagine if there had been a Wispa at the aid stations! 🤤 I'd have been over the moon! It's the little things that make the difference when you're tired 🏃♀️
@@Tonyr2 which race is this?! It sounds incredible!!!! And 🍉 is delicious, definitely one of my favourite aid station foods 😋
Nicola it's Beachy Head Marathon.and it's next Saturday, so you probably wouldn't do it as it'll stop you doing parkrun, starting and finishing in Eastbourne. Views are brilliant, running it with 5 other members of my running club Fairlands Valley Spartans. Going to be epic, my third time doing it can't wait although trying to shake off a hamstring at the mo.
@@Tonyr2 oh that sounds AWESOME! Apart from the hamstring! Yeah can't miss parkrun plus that is FAR from Leeds 🙃 Hope you have the best time 🏃♂️
Well done Nic! That looked like it would have been a lovely run on the right day, and I'm very supportive of how candid you are when things either don't feel right or go right on the day. As a bloke it can be uncomfortable to hear about "lady issues" but that's my problem and a cultural / upbringing thing rather than it being something that shouldn't be discussed! It certainly makes me more aware of how Mrs R might feel when we have races coming up. Thanks for taking the time to film and share.
Thank you ☺️ Lol I do always have a giggle to myself as I know several men who would feel super uncomfortable being so open but it's part of life so I'm like 🤷🏻♀️ Al and I always laugh because once a month I'll just cry if he says hello or I'll be so angry for absolutely no reason... Even if he's being really nice 🙈🤣 It's not easy being a woman! Definitely give the Mrs a hug when she's struggling because honestly... this race, I literally kept not being able to breathe as I was about to start crying and I wasn't actually upset about anything?! Nothing at all! 🤣 It's such a weird feeling! Plus I found this video hard to make because I've never been at event where I didn't love it but I did feel disappointed by what we got for our money. You're right though, on the right day it's definitely an epic route 😍 I'm choosing to take positives away from the day 😃
I'm doing this race in September, really useful to be able to watch you navigate the course and see what I'm in for. Thanks for the video :)
Enjoy, it's a beautiful route. I hope you get better weather! I hear they do food at checkpoints now too! 🎉 But maybe check with them as it was just a rumour 🙃 Good luck, I hope you love it. I've done loads of ultras and this was one of the easiest to navigate as it was so well flagged 😀
@@NicolaRuns That would great if that's the case. As you say, a lot of money to pay for just a couple of snacks at a checkpoint. My main worry was getting lost on the course, seen too much footage of people going the wrong way and making their race much longer. Looking forward to the event :)
@@jamesluscombe1234 I think if you have the route on a device you'll be fine. It's so well flagged so if the flags stop then you've gone wrong! 🙃
@@NicolaRunsHi Nicola. Just thought I’d update you on my Ultra X England experience from last weekend. Completed the 50k, very tough. Took me 9hrs and 34min but very pleased with the event and the whole experience. Aid stations were great and lots of food and very helpful staff. No food at the end still but cheap cafe and pizza van on site. It was nice to mental reference points from watching this video 👍
That's AWESOME! I'm so happy that you completed it, that there was food, that you found the video useful and that you had a positive race experience. Huge congratulations! 🎉🎉🎉
Oh bless you, just watching the outro and even the night before whilst packing you didn't quite have the 'Nichola zing zing' glad you are recovering and really impressed that you managed a vile v conditions ultra whilst nurturing a bug xx
Thanks Emma, yeah not my best race 🤦🏻♀️ wish I'd known just how poorly I was so I could have understood why I wasn't feeling it! 🙃
Great video, pretty much convinced me to enter for the 2024 event closing in. Although their excuse for poor feed station supplies is really terrible. If that was the case then in their rather professional literature they would surely warn people of the lack of supplies. I think it's £120 this year and for that price there should be a large supply of high quality nutrition available for every runner
I'm pretty sure they changed it the year after this as the feedback was so poor about the sad aid stations 🤣 definitely worth checking with them but it's an awesome race... Really beautiful 🤩 Good luck, I hope you have a brilliant day out there! 😍
Wow £90 that's a cost of running crisis right there... Well done always enjoyable to watch xx
Thanks 🤗 And massive lol 🤣🤣🤣 definitely a cost of running crisis! I can't be affording races like that! 😱
Well done 🙂 We camped up near CP2 last month, and it was hard work, though amazing, even walking round there!
Thanks, yeah it's a bit hilly isn't it! 🙃🤣
Congratulations on finishing despite feeling bad! I hope you rethink the birthday spa experience for next year. IMO going to a spa is ok, but a race is memorable. Just find one with a good buffet at the checkpoints and get a friend to meet you at the finish line with a cake and a beer! Again, congratulations and happy belated birthday 🎉
Thank you, ooh a race buffet and a cake and beer at the finish sounds about perfect... Maybe I will reconsider 🙃🥰
I'm here for the cat :)
We've got 2, they look so alike but one is a bit smaller, that's the only way to tell them apart 😂 apart from personality of course! 🐈⬛🐈⬛
Well done Nicola - that must have been so tough when you were obviously coming down with something so nasty. Thank you for the video and thanks for the tips - love the idea of arm warmers! And I'm definitely going to be trying Vaseline whenever I'm running from now on! Hope you're feeling better x
Thank you 🤗 arm warmers are the absolute best! I love them!!! Vaseline is okay but the zinc oxide tape is incredible! 😱😃🥰
I'm signed up for this race this year and I must say I'm devastated about the food situation 😆
Ooh Amy please check because I did hear rumours they were changing this going forwards. It certainly put me off doing another one of their events as I'm basically there for the picnic 😜🤣🤣🤣 it's a really beautiful route and so well marked. I hope you have an awesome time... And better weather! 🏃♀️
Love the 'what would a marble do' 😂
It's an ace rule 😃
Nicola you toughed that one out what with the vial loading against you ! Well done 👊🏃🏻♀️. I use tailwind always and bring sachets for checkpoint refuelling. Race events often give it out but it’s way to weak and best to know what you’re taking👊. Do a lot of LDWA challenge events, cheap, and they welcome runners and feed us with amazing snacks and sandwiches etc at checkpoints .
I've done a couple of LDWA events and they're spectacular value! They're like the polar opposite of Ultra X! 🙃 It's like £12 for an ultra and you get a weeks worth of food 😂
@@NicolaRuns absolutely why I do about 4 or 5 every year - to stock up and graze ! 😂
Congratulations on getting through a tough day of running. What an amazing route, looks like a good run to do even if the rewards are below standard. As for events I would recommend, Two Castles Run (10k) which takes you from Warwick Castle to Kenilworth Castle.
Thanks, yes it was an awesome route for sure! 😃 Ooh I love a castle, thanks for the suggestion 🤗
i remember parking on snake pass rd ,A57, running up Win hill then across to Lose hill and then back up Win hill and back to the car.
I hope I find some child free time to return there for a run soon. Failing that maybe it'll just be a walk with Poppy to appreciate it all while not feeling tired or poorly 😍
Well done, very impressive. Maybe one day but can’t imagine running that far! got my WMN top today #cooldown
Thanks 🤗 Hooray for cooldown 🥳🎉
@@NicolaRuns Boo to Warmdown!
@@Rubix78 always 😜🤣
P. M. T. And pre viral... Yikes 😱 plus really shoddy non buffet... I would be despondent too.. I found out the hard way that not all ultras are equal... But wow what a location!!! Xx
Yeah fab route but non buffet is a polite way to describe it 🤣 all ultras are definitely not equal! 🙃
Well done 👏
Thank you 🤗
Awesome video 😁
Thank you 🤗
Have so enjoyed watching your videos while on the treadmill! Thanks for all the filming you do! Quick question, do you do any extra workout/training or do you stick with running?
Thanks, you're so welcome 🤗 I go to the gym to strength train around 3 times a week. I used to do an absolute load of cycling but since I got knocked off by a disqualified driver who drove off and left me on the road I've not been out on my bike like I used to. I keep meaning to pick it back up though because I absolutely love it! 🚴♀️
Thanks for the insight into the background training you do to get so many great running events smashed. I’m so sorry that you were treated so poorly and hope that you’re able to return to the thing that you enjoy! Thanks again and look forward to future run and bike updates ☺️
@@LoadsmanJ thanks, we were away this summer but when the weather is better I should definitely get back out there on the bike 😃
Well done Nicola, that must have seemed like an awfully long 50km when you were going down with a virus. I think I would have rather been in Pateley Bridge as well !!!
Thank you. Yeah it's funny as in retrospect I think I did really well but at the time I was just fighting with the narrative of "why are you being so shit today?" In my head 🤦🏻♀️ Just kept tripping over my feet and felt wobbly and unbalanced on the edgy bits. Not my best race! Still... Learnt a lot and now I know I can still run 50km when I'm poorly, I've also learnt that it's a really really bad idea to! 😂
Well done on completing despite feeling grotty Nicola, a great achievement. Don't buy that excuse from Ultra X - it may well be a step up to their bigger events, but lots of people will end up doing that because that's their limit and have no intention of stepping up. For £90 it's very disappointing and very steep for very little. Proper health support, free water stations and goody bag at the finish (including free water) are the standard for most races from 5k onwards, so for just shy of £100, I think they're not being entirely genuine
Yeah I think they've priced it totally wrong. It was loads of people's first ever ultra and I think it would have put me off if it was my first... But like I said... I'm all about the race picnic 😋
Nicola what was the name of the tape u used for your sports bra
Mine is Ultimate Performance, that's the brand but any zinc oxide sports tape will do the job 😃
Hope you better now. Walked mam tor from Castleton, there was a tea van at the top, no way would I run it!!
That sounds ace! Where was the tea van for us?! 🙃😂 It was super miserable conditions on the top of mam tor but luckily it was only about 5km to go from there 😊
And muffins, mmm mmm 😁😁😁😁😁
try properly fuelling from the get go instead of when you’re already tired - also eat something significant with 30g+ of carbs per hour - then you can enjoy your time out
Thanks, yeah I eat a bowl of nuts, muesli and coconut milk just beforehand (less than an hour before I start, sometimes on the startline depending on where my car is) and then eat every half an hour to top up my glycogen ☺️ It turned out I had covid here... Negative tests when I was testing but confirmed as covid by the doctor so that's where the tiredness came from 🤦🏻♀️ and that explained my weird lack of balance and being so stumbly. I didn't even know I was ill until the next day. And I was tired and emotional as it was the day before my period. Not my best race! 🤣 These things happen 🙃
