The big question is why haven’t they been inspecting the ships before this happened. Calif thinks a fee or a fine takes care of the problem. The delta is one of calif best fisheries. It’s a shame they haven’t done there job to keep it free of mussels. Stockton area is my favorite place to fish .
When mussels are discovered, are they collected for study and, if so, where are they being stored for research? For those not retained for study, how are they destroyed? I think one of your guests said they found “a” mussel at Port of Stockton. And some at San Luis fore bay. Didn’t they also say the state does’t have enough financial resources to adequately deal with the mussel problem? Is that another way of saying that our Legislature hasn’t been convinced the problem is worthy of proper funding? That said, what is the status of funding requests submitted to the state for resolution of mussel issues? Your guests kept referring to the success of the quagga and zebra muscle program in Cali without backing it up with any definitive data to prove the system has in fact been effective. I understand the potential severity of what we face. But the rollout of corrective action at best so far has been disjointed and confusing.
All good questions and funding will be the key. Remember the working folks at CDFW can only do the research and make suggestions. I belive the success of the quagga and zebra mussel has been containing them so they have not invaded Northern Calif. I also agree that the roll out has been very disjointed. It is a verry difficult problem so I am willing to see what happens in the next month or so before I start jumping to conclusions. Thanks for the comment and imput.
Great information. How about our politicians getting the shipping companies involved in bringing this into the Delta to step up and pay for the costs of the problem. Why do fishermen have to pay for this problem when the problem comes from a foreign country and shipping companies? Why are we not asking them to support our fish. Are the bass fisherman in China lakes experiencing this issue since they are coming from China via shipping companies?
All good questions. I am in the process of talking to a friend who is in the Coast Guard and I would like to know the protocall on checking ships before they enter the delta.
A good question that’s been asked. After decades of shipping to Stockton and Sacramento why now? Perhaps the water infrastructure development and flooding and new port facilities in china have created the possibility of ships picking up water with less salt with veligers (larvae). Ships transporting invasive species is not new. California /Feds have dropped the ball big time
That is a good question. Just yesterday I was in contact with a Tug boat caption, he seems to have extensive knowledge of the laws reguarding what you bring up and also how they are implemented. I will make contact after christmas and hope to get some honest answers how how the inspection works. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comment. I will be checking in the next couple of days and see what I can find. No promises but I would like to find out and see where the weak link in the chain is.
It may come to that but it's way to early to tell. I hjust hope it will not be boaters that take all the financial burden. My big fear is that the mussel will effect the farming and next we have higher prices for groceries.
Why punish the fishermen? Why not make the freighters who bring these over pay for it? Also why don’t they inspect these over seas ships before they enter our waters? We are always reactive, never proactive!
This is the fault of the state inspectors and shipping companies. The people shouldn’t have to pay anything or be hindered by boat inspection or decontamination. The people need to start a class action lawsuit against those who are responsible.
I agree with the shipping co. and inspectors being the biggest part of the equation and I would love to see a class action suit but we both know thats not going to happen. I think our best bet as anglers is to unite and push for a universal banding tag. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you Steve. And a huge thank you to the folks who are trying to deal with the mussel situation. It’s a bad situation with a lot of folks thinking there’s an easy answer that’s being hidden from them, or that the people trying to help have some vague, nefarious intent. There’s no easy answer, and no one’s out to do something evil. It is what it is. Thank God someone’s trying to mitigate the damage the mussels may cause.
The odds of other bodies of water having the golden mussels is probably high. Just think how long they've been in Delta before being discovered and how many trips to other bodies of water were made by boaters in that time period. I wouldn't be surprised if there are reports of them in orher places in the near future. Just my 2 cents.
How is this guy a spokesperson he can’t even get a sentence out clearly. I’m sorry but they really didn’t say anything of value. We don’t have a plan to stop the spread and we don’t have an approach on a banding system for multiple lakes use. This is shameful representation. Tournament fishing multiple bodies of water is officially dead. Appreciate all that you do for the community Steve!
I would have really liked you to ask the question about inter-agency reciprocity on the boat tags. Right now we are limited to fishing one body of water since the tags from one lake are honored at another.
I spoke with the fish and game at Del Valle this past Friday about this subject. They are also frustrated by the lack of clear communication around a band that would work at multiple lacks.
Steve TYVM. Great info. Ladies and gents, as I watch this there is 1400 views and only 92 likes. Help Steve out and like this video! And on a sidenote, one of the few things that keeps me from leaving this state is the fact that I have so many great fisheries near the area where I live.
The clams are not edible for human consumption. They are filter feaders and retain toxins so they may not provide any long term sustainable food source for fish. Think about the start of the food chain, plankton, think about the pos. millions of mussels filtering the water, think about what happens to every species of fish in the river when you remove the base of the food chain. Not Good.
@ Havasu the sunfish grew to record size because they started to munch on the mussels there. I remembered in the 90’s catching giant red ears in the delta until everyone cleared them out by the early 2000’s. I only catch n release bass n sunfish in all bodies of water. Would never eat shellfish out the delta. Back in June I was back east and fished a small lake that had mussels and the bluegills were beefy from the mussel diet. Fish will adjust to the new food source.
In those 90 years over 150 invasive species have been introduced. This one has more serious implications. Messing with the bottom of the food web is a dangerous game.
I would love to get more detailed information on the "clean, drain and dry" process as this is likely the most important way each individual can do his part in preventing the spread.
Every water agency with all our water resources need to get together and have a united front with everyone on the same page. There are too many people going in too many directions. That would help all of us if there was one standard for all waterways.
That is the problem in a nut shell. Maybe we as anglers need to help mother load lake managers to get togather and come up with a universal banding system. I know So Cal has been banding for over 10 years and still no banding system.
The ability to go from one lake to another is essential for tournament fishing beginning in the Spring which is not that far off. Some tournament are not 30 days apart so unless a standard green tag is adapted soon not later for all lakes this will jeopardize the tournament season. Someone with the authority must organize and establish a team to develop the state wide format. This team must include subject experts such as tournament directors, fishermen, biologists, etc. Please keep the politicians out of it because they rarely add value and want to do a lengthy study which is not I repeat not what is needed.
Mussels don't float around and attach themselves to boats or get sucked into livewells and what not. If they did every body of water in the state would be infested with them. I bet just a tiny percentage of boaters actually properly decontaminated their boat after pulling them out of the water. How about trailers which are a bigger threat of moving a species that's not a fish from one body of water to another? Cleaning the trailer was never mentioned in "clean, drain, and dry". It's all about controlling the water. I wouldn't put it past the state to have sent a diver to the delta with a jar full of mussels to get the infestation started. The state doesn't care about the cost or the impact because they're not paying for it we are. It's obvious the State doesn't have a clue and were going to suffer by losing our boating rights. Anybody in this state that makes money from freshwater boating or fishing needs to start thinking about transitioning into some other line of work or plan on getting by on half their current income.
Thanks Steve, Keep up the great work, much appreciated! Merry Christmas! What bodies of water are currently close and or have restrictions? Is there a web page to get up to date information you could post?
So the Delta has this muscle and they say there is no way to remove them once they are here? Do they plan to close the Delta to all fishing and pleasure boats to prevent the spread? If they could eradicate this golden muscle from the Delta they would just arrive again on the ships coming from China, so the biggest question to ask these folks is what is being done to stop the cause of this which is the ships coming into the Delta from overseas? Or do they plan to ignore the source and just act like they are addressing this by closing lakes and reservoirs?
yes... its all part of a big con to take our water and pump it down south so billionaire farmers can grow crops that will be exported over seas! those guys were nervous bumbling buffoons.
@@nathancooper4954 I watched the video and appreciate the time you put into getting this information and starting this dialog. Those big ships will keep bringing the muscles into the Delta if that is not addressed (which it won't be due to politics and $$$), so if they are not going to close the Delta how to you stop this from spreading? The answer to this is, if we fish the Delta you will not be allowed to fish other bodies of water at some near point. The other question would be why would they keep the other lake closed down south that was mentioned in your video and then keep the Delta open if the reasoning for keeping the Delta open is the "Drain and Dry" really works? Sounds like the cows got loose and there is no way to get them back in the barn to me and I'm with others that have no confidence in those at the state working on this, especially after watching the response they gave in your video.

The east coast is littered with mussels. There’s great bass fishing still. Like finger lakes? This all blows, but the biologist seem a bit unclear to ,e.
It may not be the anglers that get the stick on this one. Farming may take the big hit. In Brazil, where the golden mussel first showed in S America in the mid 80s they are spending 100s of millions in farm maintenance due to the mussels. Remember east coast lakes are not the same as out here in the west. The calcium ballance with the water minerals make our lakes the perfect storm for growing mussels. Will they take hold? I hope not, but I'm not a biologist so I'll wait to see what science says and then I we'll see where we stand. Hope you have a great mussel free holiday and thanks for the comment.

If a lot of the reservoirs filling out of the delta, then why are boats being restricted? Seems like the boats aren’t ultimately a problem so why the limitations on boats
So when I've fished clear lake, they use vinegar to flush lines and bilges.....let it sit in the lines and the boat, it kills any mussels that might have been in the trace amounts. I decon my boat everytime with vinegar and when I go the the Colorado River, I pour it into my livewell lines as well as the bilge once all the water is drained.....let it sit overnight then open and drive home. Yes my boat smells like a Cesar salad, but it's non toxic once you go fishing again and kills all them little possible mussels.
Couple questions because i know that those mussels have been for years they didn’t just show up in October and now there found everywhere threw out the delta and week later in the oniell for bay . Question 1 how often do you do “ maintenance checks “ and what are you checking . So you say you tested one and it came back positive as a golden mussel .what was and where did your test species come from . Did you fly a golden mussel in from china our did already have one to compare to lastly did you just do 1 test and does this test have the possibility to have false positives because we have seen that some where before . Where you could test positive but not really be true . Not saying that i don’t have trust in my state ran agencies . But heck look at the great job our state agencies are doing already . Pretty liberal questions like a soft ball interview for our sitting president don’t want to confuse any body . Bottom line its hard to believe these people because every time we turn around there trying to find ways to tax our charge us more fees . Look at the quagga mussel fee its not even helping anything he said it hisself there no eradication plan . So they just closed that lake indefinitely . With no talks of reopening it our fixing the problem so what does that fee pay for besides another sticker on the side of my boat . Any ways just asking for a friend . Merry Christmas all .
They identified them using modern scientific methods. They have sent multiple specimens in for DNA testing. Its a difficult issue and these guys know as much as anyone. Takes time to figure more things out. We know they aren't good, that's for sure.
Why when I listen to these guys do I feel like government bureaucracies doing the thing that they do best news flash, not much...... and I wonder what kind of scrutiny these damn ships have coming from other countries. Obviously, it's above my pay grade.
It's also above my pay grade but I go a comment from one of the Tug Boat captions and he has all the info on how they check, believe me, there are regs in place that should have that covered. I asked if I could call him after X-mas to get the skinny. I will keep you posted, I had the same question.
@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 I just don't have any trust in the institution anymore. But I really do appreciate the efforts amd work you put into getting these interviews and stories. It's a lot of work amd well done. Thanks, ps you still owe me a fishing trip 🤪
Thanks for the comment George. What I got out of the interview was that the mussels can spread really fast-that can cause tons of maintenance problems for farmers that will in turn make our food prices go up. I think we need to give the biologist time to formulate a plan and go from there. We will need a plan put in place for a universal banding program. I think we as anglers may need to try and have a seat at the table to help.
Way to go Steve going above and beyond. I wish you would’ve asked them if you’re clean drained and dry why you’re not good enough to go boating. I don’t have barnacles on my boat like a tanker. I just can’t see these things being reproduce by a couple drops of water. Huge frustration.Camoguy
Disappointed? These guys have no clue how much this effects the fishing economy. Tackle stores, guides, local tourism, they’re taking food out of their mouths. Why the hell arent they keeping things open but providing inspections? Shit, even if they charged for them. Thats what they did for the quagga mussels, but now they wanna quarantine boats for a month, to fish 1 day on a lake. Not sustainable. Hate this states politcal bs, this is just a water grab for politicians to put money in their own pockets
But another reason to leave this insane state of California!! Put the blame on cargo ships and stop making the rest of us pay and pay we will when you all re-open marinas with big fat ramp fee increases and boat registration expenses etc.
I'm hoping the marinas stay open. I understand New Molenes is in the process of getting the cleaning truck and and the cleaning will be free so lets see what happens.
Well, I guess we better hope and you better hope that they don’t close the Delta like they did San Justo. Otherwise, your channel is gonna be in deep and not on the Delta.
What a bunch of crap. Now there worrying about it? Those ships have been coming into the port of Stockton for years and years and dumping their bilge . Sounds like closing the barn door after the horse is out. Sounds like some one hasn't been doing their job. To little to late.
That may be a fed. iss. I have been in contact with friends in the coast guard and can't seem to find any information on who ships are inspected before entering the bay. I do know it is not legal to dump ballast water within so many miles of shore. I do not know the distance they need to be off shore to dump.

The way your department mismanages our fishery you should all be fired.
How is it mismanaged, some examples?
are these the same clowns who release the baby salmon at the peak of striper season so they get demolished?
@@razerginnWe can start with how much it costs DFW to raise stockable trout for ca which according to their budgets is around $50/lb.
@@markphilippsjr Let's see what happens.
Nothing of real substance there. We need a real plan to be communicated to us.
Good question. Hopfuly that will be OK in the near future. I don't think CDFG has the say on what goes on at every lake.
What a joke
Disappointed? These guys have no clue how much this effects the fishing economy. Tackle stores, guides, local tourism, they’re taking food out of their mouths. Why the hell arent they keeping things open but providing inspections? Shit, even if they charged for them. Thats what they did for the quagga mussels, but now they wanna quarantine boats for a month, to fish 1 day on a lake. Not sustainable. Hate this states politcal bs, this is just a water grab for politicians to put money in their own pockets
“As Californians we do the right things”
But another reason to leave this insane state of California!! Put the blame on cargo ships and stop making the rest of us pay and pay we will when you all re-open marinas with big fat ramp fee increases and boat registration expenses etc.
I'm hoping the marinas stay open. I understand New Molenes is in the process of getting the cleaning truck and and the cleaning will be free so lets see what happens.
Steve Cooper, how do I get in touch with you?
email at scooper9561032@gmail.com. Send me your contact number and I will give you a call.
Well, I guess we better hope and you better hope that they don’t close the Delta like they did San Justo. Otherwise, your channel is gonna be in deep and not on the Delta.
How do you become a spokesperson when every 20 seconds you're saying uhhhmm
What a bunch of crap. Now there worrying about it? Those ships have been coming into the port of Stockton for years and years and dumping their bilge . Sounds like closing the barn door after the horse is out. Sounds like some one hasn't been doing their job. To little to late.
That may be a fed. iss. I have been in contact with friends in the coast guard and can't seem to find any information on who ships are inspected before entering the bay. I do know it is not legal to dump ballast water within so many miles of shore. I do not know the distance they need to be off shore to dump.
Absolute bs! They don’t know what they are doing
if there's a federal part of this whole scenario California is DOOMED!!!
Why Now Ships Have Been Coming From Over Seas And Docking And Off loading In The Deep Water Channel For Decades I Wander What Changed
I am looking into how ships are inspected before they arrive in port.
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 Ya I Have Been Fishing The Deep Water Channel Since The 70's With My Dad And Wee Would Fish Around The Ship Sometimes I Would See The bilge water pouring out and if you go under the ship loading docks you can see where Guys From Other Countries Have Left Message Or Just Their Initials With Date
@@indeeponthedeltawithstevec5997 that still doesn't answer @FRANKRICECOLD209 question? all of a sudden this is a issue? if they do routine maintenance checks they have been severely lacking in doing there jobs!!!
It's a game of chance. Over 150 invasive species have been introduced already. Bull heads, mud suckers, rainbow gobies, hydrila and even stripers are invasive. Its happening everywhere all the time and it's the leading cause of extinction on earth.
That's the biggest question Frank. It really does make one wonder the validity.
