- Anyone who follows our channel will likely know how long I have been wanting to catch a John Dory. The Autumn weather made the day cold and wet but between the numerous dolphins and the fantastic fishing I had a brilliant day!!! Boat fishing in the UK can still be very productive in Autumn and there is still a lot to get excited about!!

This guy catches two massive tuna by himself out of this same boat, and he's twice as excited for a fish named John. amazing catch! i had no idea fish that wacky looking existed in that area. the ocean is such a magical place.

Your videos are great, informative, and a joy to watch. One thing I would love to see you do is a video about the boat you use, it's merits, drawbacks if any, and idea of cost, new and old. Along with any other gear you feel important to going out on the water.
I have not fished for over forty years now and prior to that was a deep sea sailor and fished around the world. Now retired, I would love to get a boat similar to yours and a few hints and tips would be really appreciated.
There are already videos on the channel. They were done on the previous boat, but it all still stands. 👍🏻

Well they say you can learn something everyday no matter how old you get, well John i can say i have never seen any fisher person do what you did to try and return the fish and it worked Well done you are truly a caring person Manchester UK.
- I knew it wasn't injured or blown and it just couldn't get itself back down. So I helped it on its way. After this video I am going to make a proper decender and do a video on it. It isn't possible with all fish but some just need a little extra help. 😊
My biggest take away from this video and is his message of sustainability. While many fishermen would simply keep the fish because they have a right to, here we see his ingenuity put to use to keep just one more fish in the sea.
Its like Christmas again that re lived feeling of your first catch... Well done mate very happy for you

- Thank you Tom. As you say this is one species I have wanted to catch for a long time. We blanked on them last trip when we saw the whales and I knew that I might not get another chance this year so I really was so happy to get amongst them. 😊

Well done John, always a treat, keep on doing what you are doing. I used to to Whitby and fish with Tutt Uttley a fantastic skipper but a strict disciplinarian, it's a long time ago but I always enjoyed the trips, good times. Although I am in my 70's I need to start going again, My tackle is ready after the lock down.

What an achievement 3 John Dory in one day. For donkeys years ive always wanted to catch one. I've only ever seen them in books. Outstanding, well done John.

As a youngster I was fishing the channel on Ted Coker's boat from Folkstone with my dad and caught a whopper on a pirk intended for cod. Best tasting fish I have ever had. Great channel, loving the content. Thank you!

- We have had some incredible sightings of dolphins and whales lately. the drone footage I got of whales feeding in a previous video has blown me away. A friend of mine visits NZ quite a bit and he says you guys get a good few. Awesome stuff. 😊

Love the overhead shot as you were heading out. Absolutely beautiful, with the sun just coming up and not another boat in sight. It's like you had the whole ocean to yourself. The music you put with it was a good choice too. It was just 30 seconds of the video, but it was well worth the effort.

Many many years ago went out on a boat off Woolongong Sydney and a guy caught one. My first ever sight of a John Dory. Always remembered it from it's unusual shape and name. Said to be great eating as you point out. Enjoy!!

Brilliant! I last caught John Dory in Lyme Bay. I learnt it carries the thumbprint of St Peter, the Fisherman, on its right flank.

No. But I'd recommend "Sea fishing" by fish locker.
John you are a true Sportsman , pitting yourself against an unseen quarry , your knowledge against them . However when you do succeed you are so caring to restore your catch to its home . Keep up the good work and still hoping to see James catch his baby plesiosaurus .
- Thank you Geoffrey. I have this argument/discussion with people often actually when they question me for returning so many "eating fish". I hold two stances depending on the argument. 1st ( and this is usually in reference to the Tuna I returned ) - Is it not enough that you have won. That you have pitted yourself against a worthy opponent and in a battle of wits and strength and determination that you have won. Is that not enough? That you have to then kill it? It is not even a case of mercy, it is respect. And I think it says something about you as a man and your place in the world ..... and 2nd - and more recently - We as anglers are the guardians of the sea. We are the ones most invested and involved, we as anglers and aware humans have a base responsibility for the ecosystems and their inhabitants. This is my passion Geoffrey. The sea, and everything that lives in it. 😊
Well done on catching your John Dory John. It took me back 60 years or so to when I was a kid in Birmingham and my mother would regularly serve them for tea. She used to say that the mark on the side was because they had been held by Christ! Sadly I've never been anywhere where John Dory was on the menu as an adult.
- They are an expensive fish on the menu so we haven't either. If we didn't catch some of these things we wouldn't eat them. 😊
@@TheFishLocker I guess the economics of fishing were different back then, when Britain had a massive fishing fleet and Icelandic waters were still open. Because whilst my family wasn't poor, we weren't rich either and John Dory, Halibut and the like were on the menu at least once a week.

When COVID is over I would love if you would organise for some of us to come down to visit one charter some boats and come out with you
- We have done a few Fishlocker charters in the past but to be honest people mess me around. Don't pay and then don't show and the last 2 I actually lost money. So we will do more but only full boat charters. You book and pay for the boat and fill it yourself. Then me and the skipper just organise the fishing. 😊

Where I am in the northern part of the north island of New Zealand we have a few wharfs that we can catch John Dory off. nYears ago we use to do quit a lot of free diving and occasionally we would get Johns while spearfishing. Under water you could hear them honking sounded like a goose

Well done John. My dad..Ted Peak used to have a charter boat off Fleetwood in the 1970s on the boat Wandering Star. I remember at the dock was a Trawler called The John Dory.

Yes John. The summer of 76 was mega hot weather. I remember being out at Lune deeps (off Fleetwood) July, with glass flat calm sea, blue sky, and the water alive with sprats jumping out of the water. 6 feathers in and 6 mackerel out for an hour or so...Tope also for some. Loads of Thornback rays that summer. My Pb was 18 and half lb. Won fish of the week in loca paper & £5 to boot. All summer hols fishing on how if the boat. Happy memories...

Serve it on a silver salver with a creamy sauce...and chips. Wonderful! I saw one that size in a tiny fish shop in France and they had made it the star of the show. People were crowding to see such an incredible creature and you could see how highly they prized the fish. At the time our own shops were treating them with a little less reverence as we still had cod and haddock. I hope you had the best dish ever.
