  • Airtags are cheap, reliable, and simple almost-GPS-trackers for bikes. Here's five places you can hide them. This is my first #short

    To everyone I hope you know you can remove the speaker off the AirTag it’s really simple and makes it harder to find it since they can’t use the sound feature but once removed it can’t be added back and I usually keep 3 one under the seat one in the wheel and one in an obvious spot to make them think they got off easy

      Hah. Yeah. Creativity is always going to win. Ultimately we need bike companies to take theft more seriously and embed them inside the frame where they are more difficult to remove. If you can recover the bike before the thief can remove the tracker we'd be a step or two closer to making bike theft less common.

    Fun fact, hiding inside the motor case is NOT recommended. Know a bike shop that ruined multiple motors on bikes because of this. Luckily the manufacturer was the one who recommended this hiding spot and replaced all the motors.

      Care to give any more details on how it damaged it? On a gen 3 Bosch it looks like the outer plastic case is completely for aesthetics. May not be that way in others thiugh

    • @HunterMann
      @HunterMann 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would you have a motor case. You should be pedaling a bicycle you don’t need a motor. I’ve written up over 26 mountain passes with a simple 21 speed bicycle pedaling.
      I’m not even a professional writer so I can do it you certainly don’t need a motor

    Under tire?? Not going to throw it off balance or anything or kill the air tag.

      I've had it underneath a tire on one of my bikes since at least when this video came out. So far so good! I do keep my tires at only 40-50 psi fwiw

    Is that a Rivendell Atlantis, where you're hiding it in the wheel? Definitely, wouldn't want that bike to get stolen.

    • @batterybikes
      @batterybikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah I wish. I had planned to get a Rivendell when I got my first big boy job... but eventually decided to get my ebike instead. For SF hills ebikes are essential for me to get out regularly. I follow Riv and read Grants book though. The bike is a Handsome Devil. It's mostly a Bridgestone XO knockoff

    • @batterybikes
      @batterybikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The signal wouldn't be strong enough to get through the metal unfortunately. I did wonder if a smart 'bike framer' could cut a seam somewhere in the frame where it could go and not kill the frame integrity. Maybe use a plastic shim as well to keep it weather sealed?

    Don’t AirTags only reach 100feet or something tho someone please explain?

    • @batterybikes
      @batterybikes  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that or maybe even less. Basically the airtag says publicly over bluetooth "I'm Catobergs airtag and I'm right here!" and if there is an iphone nearby it listens to that message, then sends "I saw Catobergs airtag, it's at my current location, area code 83539/cross street x and Y" up to Apple, then Apple says "ok who should get this message" then forwards that message to Catoberg's iphone.
      So any nearby iphone works as a repeater for the airtag.

    • @popcopone5172
      @popcopone5172 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i agree. air tag should not be the main method, and the only one used to track your bike in theft. maybe just supplementary to another method you will use in the first place like a proper bike gps tracker.
      the airtag tracker makes a noise apparently if it s close to an iphone for too long so if the thieve has a iphone it might make him serch for the tracker and in the proces he migh find both trackers.
      air tag it is pretty moderately stupid for bike theft tracking. tho it might be more effective than not, most bike thieves are stupid. it will def be better than nothing.
