Short answer: Absolutely Sims 2 despite the drawbacks that they didn't have the features back in the 2000s, still offers a complete and detailed gameplay experience. Lots to do, how Sims react, so much attention to detail. It's amazing!
Also, something in the Sims 2 that I miss A LOT... The small cutscenes during special milestones ! Like, the first kiss, the proposal, the sending off kid to college as they become a young adult... Like, these weren't necessary, but they were still there ! Also, the huge family trees with possible repercutions (Hi Veronaville)... In sooo many aspects, the Sims 2 were better than the Sims 4. So were the Sims 3, even if the designs of the sims themselves weren't my cup of tea.
The thing that makes TS1, 2 and 3 better is the gameplay. Anyone who disagrees never played those games. TS4 is beautiful and I enjoy building but everytime I actually "play" I'm disappointed. Just this AM as I was building and adding all the fun things to do (these items are also reduced) I felt nostalgic for the previous games knowing Sims would visit and spontaneously use the hot tub, dart board, chess, books etc etc. Now it must be forced. They dance and play the computer. Nothing bad happens and there are reduced or no consequences for actions and no backstory. Lifeless, and their facial expressions, stupid voice and confidence walk are beyond endurance.
I think the most outrageous thing they have done is take the sims 2 download off of origin/steam/ where ea games are being run from. It’s almost like they know it will be more successful and people won’t be buying sims 3/4 content anymore, because it’s so much better than those games. So, it’s like they give you no choice but to play sims 3/4. I know if I had sims 2 again, I would most likely never touch sims 4 again.
you can still find sims 2 online for free! i got the ultimate collection on the internet archive. piracy is basically how sims 2 simmers still access the game nowadays lol
Honestly, all 3 of the older Sims were actually full game experiences that are still fun to play today, with unique strengths that appeal to different types of players. They just need some updated graphics, bug fixes and improved optimization. It'd be such an easy sell, because I know fans would jump for a simple remaster...so easy that it feels like EA is leaving money on the floor for not doing it. Like, it probably would take less effort to put a few programmers and artists on Sims 2 to spruce it up then it seems to have all these people coming and going to do the various kits and expansions for the Sims 4.
To sum it up, y'all asking the same thing I'm asking. To feel more of a loving Sims God full control of the Sims universe let alone all Sims characters having common sense when you're not actively controlling them.
sims 2 neighborhoods are still better than sims 4 even without considering the lack of an open world in 4. like sims 2 has custom neighborhoods!!! while sims 4 just gives you a fixed number of neighborhoods with a fixed number of lots! it's crazy how bad that is!! literally just like back in sims 1 times but with more neighborhoods available they put WAYY too much effort into sims 2 neighborhood customization than they needed to lol. one of the main strategies of making maps in sims 2 is importing simcity 4 maps and i just think that's super charming lol
as someone who's played sims since the literal turn of the millennium, uh, agreed. The original was a great deal of fun and sims 2 was a phenomenal follow up. three might have been incredible for the level of customization you could do, but fans generally understand it ran (runs) like an alligator in a snow field. it's still beloved, but has known flaws. all three were significantly more challenging than sims 4, which feels more like a n rpg than a life simulator. this isn't a bad thing, imo, i play a lot of rpgs, but when i'm reaching for a life sim, that's what i want to play. (sims medieval was its own thing and was very fun for what it was, which was a quest-based rpg in the sims universe where you have a lot of control of the shape of the narrative + wacky sims hijinks and absurdist humor + a level of rng that can make it just challenging enough.) that said, the squash-stretch nature of building tools and cas is _fantastic_ and one of the things i genuinely love about it. unless i'm building for a specific neighborhood, sims 4 is actually the one i reach for most often.
I never got to play much of the Sims 2. when I borrowed it from my friend it didn't run very well on my PC. Sims 4 may not be the best but at least it's not exclusive to PCs which makes it a lot easier to access & play. I hated that about the older Sims. being stuck on PCs yet PCs tended to have trouble running the games.
just trying gameplay for half an hour (after getting default replacement cc of course 🤭) and the gameplay feels so much richer than the sims 4, and far fewer bugs

The best one in the franchise is TS3. That game is everything what I needed in lifesim.
