Rocket Knight Adventures (Sega Mega Drive/Genesis) - Full Game

  • If you had a Sega console back then and no Nintendo machine, you were most likely jealous that you missed out on the great games from Capcom and Konami that were developed exclusively for Nintendo consoles. Other than a Castlevania and Contra game for the Genesis/Mega Drive which I already played through for my channel, Rocket Knight Adventures is an exclusive for Sega's 16-bit machine. It later appeared on the Nintendo SNES too, but it was a different game with the same main character.
You are Sparkster, an opossum. These things are ugly enough in reality so why did someone think this could be a great main character? Well, Sparkster is not an ordinary rodent. He got a rocket jetpack, a knight's armor and a sword. That jetpack can be charged up and becomes a major part of the gameplay. It allows you to fly briefly in 8 directions and if you hit an obstacle you will bounce off and keep going, though, in two stages you can fly permanently. It also is a powerful attack and you need it frequently to beat bosses or get out of difficult situations. You need to master this or you won't get very far. Your actual main attack is your sword that fires some little energy thing in the direction you're facing.
The plot is not very complex. A princess has been kidnapped and you're off to rescue her. The game is a mix of Contra and Sonic the Hedgehog. Contra, because you fight lots of sub-bosses, the game throws a lot of different stage hazards at you and especially towards the end of the game it kinda has the mood of the later stages in Contra games. Not alien themed, but the techno environment has a similar vibe. It's similar to Sonic too because, well, it really tries hard to be fast paced with a main character that has some attitude.
Is it good, is it bad? That lies in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion it just doesn't feel original and it tries way too hard to be funny, but fails miserably at that. The jokes and subtle details are forced and never made me laugh. Then there is the level design. They went way overboard with it. It's like they had too many ideas and not enough games to use them so they crammed them all into this one. Almost every other screen you do something entirely different for maybe a minute and then there's something new again. They should have picked a few good ideas and really flesh them out and build the stages around those ideas. That would have also made it easier to make better use of those limited 8 MBit of storage. But then... Super Mario World only had 4 MBit available and it's awesome, looks good and is huge.
The game gets much better towards the end. Stages 6 and 7 are really good, Stage 1 blows, it's a mixed bag. The graphics are good, colorful, detailled. The music isn't good, mediocre at best, but there are one or two tunes that I really like especially the techno one in the last stage. Sega's soundchip isn't that good, I know, but it is capable of much better than this.
You know, back then I read reviews in magazines of Rocket Knight Adventures and it scored pretty well and it got on my list of games I really wanted to check out at some point. Now I have and now I know I should have played Shinobi 3 instead. It's not that bad, but personally, I prefer a more streamlined experience instead of twenty different gameplay elements put together. Before I forget, this game has 4 difficulty settings and this is played on the third one, Normal. On Hard you die in one hit and at the very end you get "You are very strong!" instead of "Try Hard Mode!" according to the interwebz. So that was definetely not worth the trouble and it doesn't add anything to the game since there are no new enemy patterns and such.
Thanks for watching! And as usual: If you would like to see a game played through here, just let me know. Doesn't have to be limited to Sega Consoles either.

@@naturesbest7977 that's a hell of an accomplishment man. To this day this game is still one of the hardest games I've ever played. It wasn't until the water Temple in ocarina that a game gave me the same amount of trouble as RKA.
Though it definitely looks easier than I remember. EASIER, not easy lol.

I never made it past Stage 6 as a kid. When I was 17 I got it back out and made it to Stage 7 but died as I was playing the rival possum knight guy (Assistant Emperor?). Never made it to the end. Have played it a few times since and always die at Stage 6. Now I'm 32.

It's fun making up names for all the enemies and their strongholds that are "Pig + M-Word." Pigmooks, Pigmobile, Pigmoa, Pigminions, Pigmortar (mid-boss), Pigmantis, Pigmamba (mid-boss), Pigmarathoner, Pigmillipede (boss), Pigmauler (mid-boss), Pigmotorboat, Pigmyotis, Pigmaw (mid-boss), Pigminer, Pigmotor (boss), Pigmackerel, Pigmudcrab (mid-boss), Pigmola (boss), Pigmarine (stage), Pigmarauder (mid-boss), Pigmonkey, Pigmine, Pigmosquito (mid-boss), Pigmusketeer, Pigmover (not fought), Pigmasher (boss), Pigmetropolis (stage), Pigmissile, Pigmonitor, Pigmail (mid-boss), Pigmansion (stage), Pigmarcher, Pigmecha (boss), Pigmollusk, Pigmug, Pigmeteor, Pigmadman (mid-boss), Pigmariner, Pigmaser (mid-boss), Pigmothership & Pigmoonwalker (boss), Pigmoon (stage), Pigmaster (mid-boss), Pigmachine, Pigmouse (boss), Pigmotherboard (final boss).
By the way, Konami had some pretty weird roles in the credits of their games.

Linus Magnus Gunstar Heroes was one of the coolest games on Gen. I was angry because for so long there were no RPGs on the Genesis like the SNES, then finally Phantasy Star IV came out. I paid $99 for that game at Toys R Us! The ridiculous price was because of the translation cost! What a rip off, but it was a great game. Earthworm Jim was one of my favorite games, too. Sonic 3D was great but I liked Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles the best.

I was so excited to get this game in 1993 for Xmas! Me & my cousin got halfway through the game but it go so hard, we kept dying on the part where you have to rush through the level without getting squished. The bosses were great, and I loved all the weird mecha. I think you're being too hard on the game, the variety was what made the game more than just a button-masher through the whole thing. That's why you got that great shooter level! Well at least I can die happy now, I have seen the ending. I don't know if I will ever be able to get there on my own, but at least my eyes have witnessed it.

This game had two more difficulties "very hard" and "expert". In expert, you die in one hit and had no continues, but you can win lives. When I beat the game in that difficulty (1995 or 1996), took me at least 3 hours because first I had to pass the entire game in hard an very hard modes. I think it was a bizarre journey. At the end in "expert" mode the message says the name of the game an a series of numbers, I actually think that this numbers represents the day that the game came out.

@temujin9000 This game rules even today! The boost mechanic is so unique and original that they failed to do it justice in the new sequel.
I fail to see how you think that everything in the game is mediocre. The music rocks on every stage, the level gimmicks play off the level themes nicely, build off the rocket engine and aren't too hard to figure out, the cutscenes and graphics are highly animated and amusing, and there's a great plot twist at the end that nobody could predict.

Had this Game on Megadrive in the summer of 97 . very hard but i finished it . believe it or not i was so obsessed with this game that i have dreamed of a method of beating the last boss of the game and when i woke up i replayed the game and it worked . the imagination you have when you are a kid is unbelievable !! . sucks to be adult :D

Ah, nostalgia. I remember playing this game as a kid, but strangely I don't ever recall making it to the final boss. Oh well, too late now, my old Sega Genesis bit the dust a long time ago, lol.

What a game . it still looks great and the sound and music is top notch !! 2nd game i had on my megadrive in 97 . it is as hard as it gets given the reputation of 90s konami . i used to dream about this game to the point of figuring out in my dreams how to beat the last boss waking up and applying it to the game and it worked :D . oh when life was so simple . thanks for the video . sadly the golden age of videogames is long gone

This is why I love Konami. Walking through Tokyo a few years ago I saw their building and it brought back memories from childhood. Bear in mind the megadrive was developed in about 87, it took 6 years to really harness the power of its CPU. When programmers from Konami produced Gunstar Heroes they choose the megadrive over the SNES due to its Motorola 6000. This game is amazing in every way, not just its sound and graphics but also its playability

How can you complain about too much variety? Thats what made the game awesome! Then you say it wasn't too original? I would think all the variety it has makes it original. Lots of ideas I didn't see in other games, some that I had. I don't remember any other characters back in the day with a jetpack that worked the same as Sparksers. I owned it back in the day, and it was one of my favorites on genesis. Oh yeah, this was never released on super nintendo, its sequel was, and I heard it was a more appropriate sequel than the genesis version, both simply called Sparkster.

Totally agree, Rocket Knight is a blast to play, the first level transition from platformer -> shoot em up -> platformer made a very good impression of the game just at the beginning.

I just read a few of his "reviews" and this channel sounds like a Genesis troll in Sonic avatar disguise lol. Too much bullshit in what he says, he tries too hard.

I've missed this game so much! ...... the most favorite stages are 5, 6, and 7 but never thought about first made it to the final stage against the boss 54:54 in the age of 10 or 11 which bring back memories. I love the ending!

I could never beat this game, but I love it! It makes me sad that this has never seen a remaster or been included on any of the mini consoles.
