I really like how you just dove right into the video. No stupid loud intro graphic or a 5 minute intro on what the Sega Genesis is. Thanks for treating the audience like TH-cam viewers and not some stupid cable TV channel. You earned a subscriber!
Thunder Force III was released in Europe, but 100% in the look of the US Genesis game. There was also a manual in the respective language in which the game was sold. It's a unique curiosity, and the game is very good. That's why the European Thunder Force III is very rare and expensive.
I love that people have been talking about Rocket Knight Adventures a lot more recently. It's honestly one of the best games not only for the Genesis, but for the 16-bit era as a whole. I got it in a discount bin as a kid just because I loved the cover art!
It kinda uses the same blast run as tiny toons. Rocket nights adventures is one of the best sega games. Music charters gameplay was sick blasting across the screen. There was a sequel
I actually got myself a Genesis for Christmas recently and I'm now collecting games for it like Aladdin, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles
I saw the cover of "Herzog Zwei" on your shelf. That is for me one of the best games on the system. Real time strategy but you are a transformer and can engage combat. Still getting goosebumps when the music starts. Plus it had split screen vs. which is rare on those games, even today. But great list!
Tiny Toons doesn’t get the love it deserves. I’m a huge Genesis fan, so I won’t list everything I love here that you didn’t mention. But TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Shining Force 1&2, the Castle of Illusion series, Road Rash, and Alisia Dragoon! Ok, I’ll stop. 😂
@@TerriblyAwesomeGames Crazy because once I get off work and spend a bit with the lady I'm gonna hop on the PC and play this game I've never played the Sega tiny toons didn't even realize they had one.I got the whole collection downloaded yrs ago via torrent just never got around to play it.I got a 12tb hybrid hdd/ssd full of games from arcade to ps3 so ive been busy.I subbed man good vid btw
🤘"Mega drive" always throws me for a minute. My favorite genesis game ever is probably Chiki Chiki Boys, even though you could sit down and beat it fairly quickly. Rocket Knight Adventures is probably 3rd, if not 2nd.
It can be pretty hard to pick just 15 games. Genesis has a pretty sweet library. A few of my favorites from my small collection: streets of rage 2, gaires, TF3/4, shadowrun, ps4, tmnt, beyond oasis, gunstar heroes, hellfire, gley lancer, musha, sf2 sce. There's a few that are on the mini 2 that I'd love to own physically but man they're pricey 😅. I hope we see battlemania 1 & 2 reissues at some point 😃
My first console ever, but the only ones I've played here are Sonic 2 & Gunstar, I didn't have many games for it growing up. Couple of them that you showed that I wanna give a go now, thank you :)
I've been thinking about it for awhile but this year I need to do it. Buy a Treasure Chest & put all my Treasure Games in it. My next project for 2024! Love your Picks & have you tried Master of Darkness it was a Castlevania Clone for Sega. Also i have a Japanese Nomad & it only plays foreign games, so I have the Monster World Games! I grew up around a pinball arcade, so the original Sonic has a special place in my heart! It was Pinball, but video game mode! Sonic Spinball was another game I couldn't wait 4 & i got it on Game Gear too! Thanks for the Retro Break!
My fave trio of games for the system are Thunder Force IV, Road Rash II and the first Streets of Rage. After these comes a few dozen other games that stick very close to the top for me, like Streets of Rage II, Toejam & Earl, Dragon's Fury, Contra: The Hard Corps, Castle of Illusion, Atomic Runner, Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Musha, Dune: The Battle for Arrakis, Flashback, NHL 94, Beyond Oasis, Zero Tolerance, Alien Soldier, Desert Strike, Speedball 2, Sonic 3, Golden Axe III and both The Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III. There are many more though and the nice thing is, they still seem to be coming these days, with great home brew releases like Astebros, Tänzer, Xeno Crisis and Tanglewood. Yesterday i've posted a list of upcoming Genesis games somewhere and here is a copy of that list: BioEvil Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Chords ColocoDX Crypt of Dracula Daemon Claw Gears of Rage Ghouls 'N Ghosts Arcade Heavy Recoil Irena Genesis Metal Fury Kirito Life on Earth Lufthoheit Manifold Megacraft Mega Final Fight Mega R-Type Phantom Gear Planet B Real Bout Fatal Fury Special Space Hunter Sunset Riders Arcade The Secret of the 4 Winds Wacky Racers ZPF Not sure if all of 'em will be released. Still, some already look very promising!
Great list! I was blown away by Soleil when I rented it as s kid but didn't really understand it. Some of my favorite Genesis games are Earthworm Jim 1, Mickey Mania, Alladdin and Sonic and Knuckles 😊
Enjoyed the video! Thank you for sharing your favorites! Toejam and Earl was one of my favorite Genesis games! Castlevania Bloodlines (what is written on my copy) is up there too!
Rocket Knight Adventures is my favorite too. I love that game to death. The whole series really. I first saw it in an ad from some old comic books I had as a kid in the late 90's-early 2000's and it fascinated me. Wasn't until I was in high school that I bought a copy, but I didn't have a genesis or mega drive so I had to emulate it, which I also didn't end up doing until I was in college. I loved the game then but never finished it (though I did buy, play and finish the 2010 release when I was in high school). It actually wasn't until a couple years ago that I finally sat down and played through the whole game. Brilliant game, I prefer it to Sonic and really wish there were more in the series, or at least for SEGA or Konami to re-release any of the first three! To my knowledge they're all locked to their original systems. It's a shame.
It would be so great if Konami could make a rocket knight collection and include all the games for modern system, none of them have ever got a re release as far as im aware :(
Yeah, most of these are my favorites, too. There's also Grey Lancer, Zero Wing, Keiou Yuugekitai, Battle Mania 1 & 2, Splatterhouse 2 & 3, Beyond Oasis, Alisia Dragoon, Dune 2, and Surging Aura.
Great list! This makes me want to go back and revisit many of these games! These are some of my favorites, too. Though, I haven't played played Crusader of Centy, Monster World IV or the Phantasy Star games yet. In addition to the ones you mentioned, I also played the heck out of Castle of Illusion, Sonic 1, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Earthworm Jim 1 & 2, Vectorman, The Lost Vikings, Mickey Mania, Contra Hard Corps, Toki, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Cool Spot, Mega Bomberman, and Quackshot.
Great video. You have chosen some really interesting games. Surprised you didn't pick Alien Soldier seeing as you liked Gunstar Heroes so much. Also, I highly recommend Lemmings as the Mega Drive has the best version with 180 different levels! 😊
I never really considered Rocket Knight Adventures as the best game on the system but now I'm convinced. You can count me among the Shining Force fans. I also really enjoy Ecco the Dolphin, and if we're talking about Sega CD then definitely Snatcher.
@@RetroBreakBe prepared to lose a ton of sleep, because once you beat the first one, you're going to want to play all the other ones. One suggestion though, if you can, try and play them in order (SF1, SFcd, and then SF2). Shining Force 3 isn't connected to the other games, because it's a part of it's own trilogy. Shining Force for the GBA is the same story as the one on the Sega Genesis, except it has added content. Please let us know what you think of it, and one more piece of advice....when you beat them, make sure to watch all of the ending credits for a nice surprise!
Nice list. Mine is a bit different, but Genesis/Mega Drive has so many games and what is the best mostly depends on the nostalgia factor. 1. Flashback - The Quest for Identity 2. Thanks for this. It’s cool to see what a member of the UK says about Mega Drive. I assumed the releases were so different that it wouldn’t make sense turns out our lists are pretty similar. I imagine the differences are only in gaming taste and not regional. Very cool
Starting with Tiny Toons....knew it was gonna be an epic video! The megadrive is a beast of a system and definitely wins over the snes, although to be around as a teenager during the 16 bit wars era was awesome...each system pushed each other and it was really a win for the gamers! Totally top pics there, all absolute belters! Haven't seen a vid of yours pop up in a while but, love the shelves with the artwork on show even if it was only done for this vid 😉 These vids are always down to personal preference but, can't argue with any of your choices there👍 All the best for 2024
I don't think anyone would begrudge you Rocket Knight Adventures at #1. It's absolutely one of the systems best games on the system. I actually do think Sparkster has better music so it's got that going for it.
This is a nice list, with various of the game I would put in mine too. Although I would add: The Adventure of Batman & Robin. What can I say about this game ? It's so damn good to play ! The action, the music, the gameplay, the mood, it's a total blast. Tecmo Cup that was amazing as a kid since I loved watching Captain Tsubasa (Olive & Tom). Vectorman that is an amazing game, again a shooter, but the Megadrive is so good for that genre (and it's kind of the one I prefer). Shinobi 3 that I absolutely love the perfect mix between a shooter and a platformer, everything is just top notch, but the most impressive thing was of the advanced gameplay for a game of this era, it still feel so modern today. My favorite Sonic ? It's hard to choose, I have a lot of memories with all, but I guess Sonic 1 will always be the first, because it's my introduction to video games, and Green Hill Zone is such an amazing soundtrack, it will be tied forever to my first childhood memories. X-Men 2. Again one of the best platformer of the console, Sega did so well with this one, it's just amazing. If you don't know about this game, just play it ! Its so good that you won't regret it. I would also like to add the Smurfs (Schtroumpfs in French), because I played this one so much. Again an excellent platformer, I really loved the adaption from comics or animated movies or show on the Megadrive, most of the time it was just done right. Ok, this game is not the easiest one, but it teach to be consistent, to learn and it's just fun. I lof of good moments for me. The fact that I liked the comics very much certainly did help. Now it's time to speak about Aladdin. This game is one of the absolute best the console offer. Perhaps the best platformer, everything is so well made, it feel absolutely like the movie, and as a kid I loved it. It was dope being able to play it. Way better in every area to the Snes version, I would say this game is the must. The soundtrack are absolutely outstanding. Well, I guess it's time to leave a word about Soleil, I did not want to speak about games you already listed, but this one was such a special experience for me that I feel the need to share why it's the case. First, as a French kid, I was surprised to see a game with a French word, so it got me very curious, but while playing it, I was really surprised. First the story is incredible. Way deeper than A Link To The Past for example, it doesn't only bring you to play, but to grow as a good person, it teach about others perspective, to respect them, and try to understand them. And this was something really unique to me. And it's not all, the soundtracks are really amazing, I loved so much listen to them that I have even downloaded some. But with that, I want to also speak about the action part of this game: it's simply brillant. Smooth, responsive, it feels great, better than A Link To The Past in that regard, Sega did such an amazing job, to bad they did not male a sequel, or at least an adaptation for newer console, it would have been fire. For me it's a classic. Especially make kids play it.
I approve your choice of Sonic 2, best in the series. No Landstalker in your top, it's such a great game. Funny, challenging, infuriating too. My personal best.
I enjoyed tiny toons back in the day but never considering it as one of the best games. I recently readded it to my collection so I guess that says something about it! Which I also got from lees games lol
That’s a great list, I wouldn’t have picked PS2 over 4 but apparently for the MD mini 2 they made an easier version of PS2 to make it more accessible. I played Soleil thanks to my mini 2 and I really wish I had played this as a kid! Have you played Story of Thor? I only did a couple of years ago and was surprised by how good it is!
Great video. Appreciate your justification for preferring Thunderforce III over Thunderforce IV, which made sense, but for me it has to be IV. Perhaps nostalgia plays a part, but the music in IV and the improved graphics made for an adrenaline pumping experience. Both great games though. As for your No. 1, great choice and a game I happen to be playing through myself at the moment 👍
I’ve recently been pulling my Mega Drive boxes back out of the attic and reintroducing them to the idea of shelves (the carts had been living in a chest of drawers). I have kept a few shortlist of top ten/twenty* games for various systems over the years, but they've pretty much always been in flux. Things have moved in and out, up and the down the list based on my whims at whatever the time I last look at it was, as well as additions to the libraries. There a few here for the Mega Drive that have been/still on my own personal list pretty consistency. Gunstar would probably top the list most days of the week. It along with Dynamite Headdy paved a long time fan for Treasure's games, even if their output has been all over the place. Sonic 2 was my first game for the Mega Drive (pack-in with model II). If only doing a list with standalone titles, it would probably get the nod (albeit further down the list), otherwise I'd say I personally preferred Sonic 3 & Knuckles over it. Probably end up with Contra: Hard Corps/Probotector and Ranger X on my list, oh and Shining Force II (which was made by Camelot, the same folk behind Golden Sun). Yeah, strangely the Megadrive cart for Castlevania: New Generation/Bloodlines forgoes the title. It is on the box though (alas I’m lacking the manual). Lastly, Soleil is pronouced like Sol-Lay. If memory serves, the UK and US versions have their own translations. :P *Depending on if said console has enough to warrant one or the other.
Excellent video as always ! Could you also do a video about the 32x and the megadrive cd ? Or perhaps a video about console expansion pack like the 64dd 😃 thank you for the content !
That’s a great list of games. But I continue to be surprised how many retro gamers have no sports games on their best-of list. For us, the Genesis was all about sports games. The early Sega Sports games with a celebrity endorser(Tommy Lasorda, Joe Montana, etc.) and the later games when EA took over.
@@RetroBreak Don't get me wrong; I still enjoy the game and have played through it a number of times. There's a few platformers I'd probably place over it, but it's still a very solid game. One of the games I'd put over it is in the background; Decap Attack. I love that game and really like the ability to flutter jump by tapping jump quickly. I also think Chuck Rock II is criminally underrated. I may even put Cosmic Spacehead over Tiny Toons, if only because I really like its hybrid point and click gameplay.
What was the indoor market in Telford called? I recall the guy who worked there was called Dave and i'd spend hours just crouched looking at all the games while mum was shopping. There was another shop in Dawley where i bought Pokemon Stadium 2 from for £60 without an expansion cart... oops!
I wish that I could say I had a x amount of favorite Mega Drive games, but the more I buy... the more impossible that becomes because of how I like X in ___ and Y in ___ etc. Same thing for any other Sega console I buy for.
Treasure made a fighting game call yuyu hakusho Makyō Tōitsusen it isJapanese game no english writting. If you get pass the menu you will find a 4 player gem.

Haven't seen a vid of yours pop up in a while but, love the shelves with the artwork on show even if it was only done for this vid 😉
These vids are always down to personal preference but, can't argue with any of your choices there👍
All the best for 2024
I don't think anyone would begrudge you Rocket Knight Adventures at #1. It's absolutely one of the systems best games on the system. I actually do think Sparkster has better music so it's got that going for it.
I agree, the music in Sparkster is 10/10 probably some of my favourite tunes on the system! They are both amazing games!
Rocket knight is such an amazing game
Great list!
A top favorites of mine would have to include Kid Chameleon, Truxton, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Phantasy Star 2, and Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
Having been watching for a good few years I knew number one was incoming, lol, great game! 👍
It's been on my list for a good few years! Glad I finally got round to making it! :D
This is a nice list, with various of the game I would put in mine too. Although I would add:
The Adventure of Batman & Robin.
Loved the Thunderforce games when i was younger 🎉
Enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
👍Up and Subbed 🤟 for you.
I actually prefer Lightening Force or in your region, Thunder Force 4 !
Great video, I really enjoyed seeing your top games for the megadrive! Some of my favorites were dynamite heady, gunstar heroes, ristar, and sonic 2!
Xmen 2 clonewars xmen 1 , maxium carnage, demolition man , rocket knights, looney tunes and looney tunes sports, Outlander, phantom 2040, sonic 3
Well, I'm glad that my top-3 sega md games in this list =) Tiny Toon, Soleil, Monster World 4
aaw, earthworm jim didn't make it :'( lol great video!
1, great choice and a game I happen to be playing through myself at the moment 👍
cracking video mate and brilliant to see lee's games getting a shout out. ❤
*Depending on if said console has enough to warrant one or the other.
lees games is brilliant,he has the shop as well.as a stand in the market
Awesome video as always!
VERY good picks, especially your appreciation for the possum!
Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
Can't wait to hear your top Master System games
Dude, I want to display my Mega Drive games like you. That looks absolutely sick! Hope I get the space for it some day.
Be careful my friend... SOLEIL(pronounced SO-LAY) NOT Soliel... which means SUN in French😉
No nonsense informative videos, well done!!
Oh my god I totally forgot about game zone in the Darwin center!!! That took me back!
Herzog Zwei, Sonic 1, Dune, Streets of Rage, Desert Strike
Rocket Knight Adventures is genuinely a top 5 2D-platformer of all time
Soleil is a french word meaning "sun" and is pronounced soh-lay
Excellent video as always ! Could you also do a video about the 32x and the megadrive cd ? Or perhaps a video about console expansion pack like the 64dd 😃 thank you for the content !
Great list! Good inspiration!
Great list many of my favourite Mega Drive games
That’s a great list of games. But I continue to be surprised how many retro gamers have no sports games on their best-of list. For us, the Genesis was all about sports games. The early Sega Sports games with a celebrity endorser(Tommy Lasorda, Joe Montana, etc.) and the later games when EA took over.
I know there was alot of love for genesis sports titles but I thought they all sucked. 😂
Sparkster should've been number 1, its by far the best genesis game of all time.
Very nice video great work❤
I'd like Tiny Toons way more if the jumping didn't feel so...off.
The gravity turns to 1000% as soon as you let go of jump, but I kind of like it!
I may even put Cosmic Spacehead over Tiny Toons, if only because I really like its hybrid point and click gameplay.
great vid mate. cheers
Great vid !!
Sonic 2 has my favorite zone: Casino Night
Yuss Monster World iv.
It's Soleil!
What was the indoor market in Telford called? I recall the guy who worked there was called Dave and i'd spend hours just crouched looking at all the games while mum was shopping. There was another shop in Dawley where i bought Pokemon Stadium 2 from for £60 without an expansion cart... oops!
Super Games 196 in 1 has almost all these and it's only $15 . It goes in your sega just like a game, same size . Walmart online has it , Amazon
This is Soleil (Sun) not Soliel 😊
Excellent video ! Megadrive for ever 😍
You missed Dune II, Batman Forever, Lion King, Comix Zone, Pocahontas, Earthworm Jim, Aladdin and Boogerman.
11:45 sonic 2. I like it the most.
Hell Yeah !!!!
Kid chameleon is a great game I played on my phone and I played it on genesis both good
Lost Vikings is the best Mega Drive Game.
I wish that I could say I had a x amount of favorite Mega Drive games, but the more I buy... the more impossible that becomes because of how I like X in ___ and Y in ___ etc. Same thing for any other Sega console I buy for.
Toejam and Earl definitely the best game on MD
Yeah Treasure were one of the best devs
My best has to be streets of rage 2.
Favourite megadrive game is gynorg 😊
Where’s Vectorman?
Interesting video! 💋👌
Streets of rage 2 has to be on this list!!!!!!
Treasure made a fighting game call yuyu hakusho Makyō Tōitsusen it isJapanese game no english writting. If you get pass the menu you will find a 4 player gem.
