I’m a retired US veteran I moved to DR last August it’s the best decision I’ve made in my life…thanks for the continuous content guys you are BOTH amazing!
I was born in DR but grew up in NY, but let me tell you am planning to move back to DR soon. i mean the peace and mental relaxation is priceless in DR.
Some years ago I was vacationing in the DR and I'll never forget the moment a Dominican said to me "Dominicans work to live, and Americans live to work." It had a really profound affect on me and my thinking. While I don't expect to ever permanently move away from the US, starting this November I will start spending more time each year outside of the US.
I feel and agree with everything you say, James. However, there is a flip side to an American living abroad in other countries. And that's the dependence on the use of the US dollar. No one seems to talk about this aspect of the equation. If an American was not receiving money from the US to convert to Dominican pesos, do you think they would still have the same outlook on living in the Dominican Republic or anywhere abroad for that matter? Because let's be honest, it's the US dollar that's making it possible to take advantage of the cheaper cost of living in the DR and other countries.
Absolutely. Many people want to live on $1,500 a month in the DR and still find it expensive, but they wouldn’t survive in the US with that same amount.
Valid point. But the US $ is not going anywhere; at least not for now. Use the dollar to strengthen your situation here. The banks here have some investment opportunities. Build up your money there and you might find you can live with very little US$. There are other things too.
@@Dee-pj7hh I agree with you brother when you say, use the dollar to strengthen your position wherever you're living by taking advantage of investment opportunities. But let's be honest, a lot of people, do not possess the mindset to do that, because they don't teach that in these public fool aka (school) systems. People need to keep in mind, that the entire US monetary system, is a house of cards. Nothing of intrinsic value is backing the US dollar other than the faith/belief that people put into it. The US dollar is fiat money, so therefore at any given moment, the US monetary system can come crumbling down.

Hey brother it's the same in Ghana in west Africa when it comes to quarls and disputes. They get very heated and emotional but people around and most of the time complete strangers step in and separate and talk sense into both parties and before you know it things are back to normal. In Ghana they have a saying. "No fight ." One of the things I love about the country. Happy to know that the same culture exists in the D.R.
Thank you for commenting and liking my country, I live in the United States and I am excited just thinking about returning to my beautiful land. God bless you
Good answer by James. Some gringos can't hack it. They rely on a community of gringos for support. If you can't immerse yourself in the language and culture, then it's not for you.
I'm an American who plans to move to Puerto Plata this year. I want to start a business of restaurants in Puerto Plata and Santiago. I love the Dominican Republic's culture and don't want to "Americanize" it at all, other than the menu that my restaurants will offer and the wages that i plan to pay. I want my employees to feel that they are paid better and treated better with my company than they would be by any other company.
Looking forward to be permanently in Puerto Plata too. Let us know if your plans of installing a restaurant become reality so we can enjoy it and give you business 😁
Norberis , you both are welcome to visit us here on the island of Key Largo, Florida! We’re only 1 hour more or less from Miami with lots of shopping! I once lived in Playa Cofresi, Puerto Plata, DR. The Florida Keys has beaches and beautiful neighborhoods without any hustle or bustle. When people say they are going to do something here on this island, they mean it! That’s why we left DR because it was a predatory situation about the financial situation. We’ve got Cuban restaurants and Thai places, and lots of places that you can grab something quick, and it’s not fast food! You’re both welcome to come and stay with us and Vlog your travels from the 43 islands that make up the Florida Keys! We have so many friends that have moved here with us and we are all tight knit like family! Hit us up around the end of the year or so.. I DIDN'T KNOW YOU TWO WERE MARRIED!!!!! 😂 Today I learned after watching Norberis occasionally since a few years ago (and finding your husband's channel recently)
Man you said it. That hampster treadmill is a REALITY for far too many of us. The daily routine is monotonous and you ask yourself and I really living or simply existing? My second retirement will happen in November and I will definitely be moving to Punta Cana. My wife is Dominican and as expected she misses being there. The Green Card process is terrible, so we are delayed even in her being able to visit home. The financial difference is going to be very substantial for us, so freedom is on the way.
Most people with the ability or possibility to move from one place to another without too much hassle get tired of living in the same place after 3 years. However, with changing furniture or adding new things to the house or apartment people can extend living in one dwelling for more than 10 years. But even in the USA people get tired of living in the same home beyond 10 years. Having money and/or the possibility to do so makes all the difference when making that decision.
I enjoyed the point of views. I agree DR is not a one glove fits all. Alot of it seems to be what is your motivation and purpose. A nice balance in terms of your individual experiences. A peace of mind is priceless. I hear you loud and clear.Another good one🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾.
Thanks for that. I think a key factor is that you guys are in Santo Domingo instead of the many rural areas. I.m from NY and I love visiting tropical places including Fl and DR. I also have family in DR, but what I find difficult is feeling there isn't enough to do unless you happen to be in the Capital. You could be financially good, but if there's not enough to do, it gets old quick. I am used to being able to be 15 minutes to 30 minutes from anywhere without blinking an eye. Museum, park, cafes, shopping, etc. When you are in a resort, that is not real life. I think trasitioning from Fl might be easier than a big city. You could live like a king in many DR locals with US money. I really like your apt and the other places you have shown around el malecon. Thanks again
Congratulations James y Norberis. All the way up. I am dreaming of one day, living there just one year myself 😃😃😃. Yes James I am getting my eyes on hard too when I’m in Puerto Plata 😆😆😆. Understand this is the way locals do things. Do not compare the DR y the US. Don’t try to be a savior. Let things fall into place, you will eventually get into your routine and find your space. Congrats again guys. 3 more years💪💪💪👍👍👍.

From the financial perspective I do agree with you guys, however, Dominican Republic is still facing great challenges that are contrasting to most Americans willing to permanently move there, corruption being the main one. Driving on DR's autopistas resembles driving in Mexico City where local traffic cops stop you for the "mordidas". First, we are not used to be getting stopped on the streets for no reason, much less by traffic cops with intentions of intimidation and extortion. This happens to us every time we drive from Punta Cana to Casa De Campo. They position themselves right on the hottest tourist travel areas looking for some poor pariguayo they can extort from. Its a shame; such a beautiful country and a few bad apples killing their main source of income.
Ay @@NorberisR , please! It happens all the time. Just this last Saturday I got stopped twice on my way to the airport on Autopista del Coral. They pull everybody over at random! I normally drive with the Waze app, and a couple of months ago I slowed down to 80km/hr to test them out and still got pulled over with the excuse that there were checking to see if I had my belt fastened. I guess locals don't mind, but it pisses the heck out of tourists.
Don't get me wrong @@NorberisR I love your country, but I believe that since Dominican Today reports a projected growth of 15% in the tourism sector for 2024, translating it to an estimated average profit of around $600 million, some of that money could be invested in educating/compensating these few rotten apples so they project a better image to the traveling tourists. By the way, I love you guys videos; keep up the good work!
At this point we don't know that the money will not be invested in those sectors. It seems logical that if the country is going to continue to grow there has to be a commitment to improve infrastructure and education. I see the improvement of the country from when I left in 2007. Wait a minute James not City Trends 😂 I feel you though. Places like Marshalls, DD’s and Ross be having good discounts. I stayed in Boca Chica for a week. There’s no fast food or Uber Eats there. That’s right learn all about the culture. I know I am 😂
I think it's a Wendy's or Burger King, one of those right when you're entering Boca Chica from Santo Domingo.....but they have great restaurants......and much healthier
Dee Dee's and CitiTrends? I haven't been to those in a minute. Lol. I do like the content of the video, and people have to go and see what culture speaks to them. For me Santiago speaks to me the best always.
Excellent video, guys. I really appreciated James' honest assessment of the nature of social life and interactions, it's so important from a day-to-day perspective. Great info, thank you
Nice video. I find it interesting that when Americans decide to leave to a whole different country because they are tired of the stress from working hard, it tends to be people from the cities. Most people want to live in the big cities but realize how hard it can be to build a home, raise a family, and still have money to vacation. You can get out the cities in the US and have a slower life. Maybe that's not the case here but Fort Lauderdale is a big city, and it makes sense that you would want to leave.
In my opinion, iam from germany, its so wonderful there, i live the country, the people, santo domingo and there is everything, i speak spanisch and when i visit my family in santo domingo i can stay 6-8 weeks but then i have to come back, the heat is hard for me, and the darkness after 6 is crazy , and also the „pobreza“ i dont like to see that everywhere - but its nice for a view time there
Hi Norberis & your husband. I probably missed it on another one of your videos, but can you please share how you guys make a living? Thanks for sharing your experiences in my beautiful DR ✨️🙏🇩🇴
We have variety ways we earn money. My husband is an HR and Social Media Consultant so he has his own clients. We both have TH-cam Channles where we earn income from both channels. I manage Airbnb Properties here in DR. And I also offer consultations and relocation services.
I will be retiring soon. We love my beautiful country. We just came back last night. We went house or condo hunting. We are almost there. My mother is from San Juan de la maguana
Man I have mixed feelings about videos like this. I love dominican republic and plan to move there. But I don't want Americans to move there and mess it up.
Me too! 😂 I’m Dominican and I keep telling Americans how wonderful is my country and how great a place to live it is, but I also don’t want them to bring the nonsense I’ve found in the US, developments in areas that not so long ago were virgin nature, and more inflation because they spend in dollars but we spend in pesos. 😅
@@dumbphonemomthat sounds like a local government problem just like the states. There are more than just Americans that move there. I see Asian and Europeans migrating heavy over there.
But Dominicans are American but birth as well because Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 is located in the America continent. The DR is the oldest country of the Americas and was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first trip in 1492. The capital city, Santo Domingo, is the site of the first Catholic cathedral, first university, and first hospital. The city of Santo Domingo was also the first seat of Spanish rule in the Americas and new world. You probably means the people from United States or US. 🙌😎🇩🇴🙌
Jay said he felt "suffocated" in the United States and I felt the exact same way! I don't miss much from the United States other than family and friends. In reference to fast food, I am not sure about Santo Domingo but almost everywhere I have been throughout the country there are food trucks that offer "comida chatarra."
Hi been following you for maybe two years I love your channel. Just want you to have another channel in Spanish because you guys do a lot of stuff that i go and would like to go . And a lot of Spanish speaking countries love DR but don’t speak English
Wow I have a painting very similar of the broken beach fence. But mine in not blue it is more tan. I really like that image it reminds me of my youth at Jones Beach those sticks became swords for dueling, LOL. I like the beach but as a city boy I have to have a city close by. Puerto Plata does not work for me Santo Domingo does. But I cannot stay in DR more than 6 months than I miss NYC, and NY state. 🤷♂ I get burnt out, I loose the DR "Glow" and its time to go home. UBER up and running now much better in La Capital makes me stay in the city more. All that walking in the heat can be brutal.
I am fortunate enough to be able to visit twice a year and sometimes when I’m really lucky 3 times a year, I would give anything to be able to live there and leave this monstrosity of a country forever

i have a question I will be there in May….Staying in Santo Domingo but i am venturing off out of the two which one do u prefer beach wise Barahona or Semana
I've never been Barahona but I heard the beach is beautiful. I plan to go there at some point. Samana, I have visited and also has beautiful beaches. They're both around the same distance. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
@@NorberisRI went to Barahona last year. The beach was too violent for swimming, not one person in the water, and the locals warned me not to enter. There are several water holes , they're cool but far from neat and polished and are heavily populated with locals and visitors with their families and very loud music. I'm cool with it, but I'm sure that not everyone is.
James how do you deal with the fact that if a bank is going under they can keep all of your money? Do you have all your money in DR or do you keep your money abroad in the US? Love your place, kudos 😊
In the US is UP to $200k... And in Canada, $100k... Never keep money in the bank, keep money in assets like stocks, ETF, real estate but NEVER EVER EVER in the bank... All my money are either in ETF or on my onlin e business (stock) but in my bank I only keep enough for the daily expenses
How is the return policy there? I was told by a Dominican that the stores didn’t take returns. In the states, the stores take returns and certain stores there are no questions asked. Home Depot, you use the product once, then return it as if it had a problem.😂
Black men like DR for obvious reasons...Its usually nice living around what you like. But don't forget being American has made it easier for you to live like you do in the DR. There's a reason why people from DR like to come live in the US a lot.
I will say, if not for anything, at least visit the Republic of Dominica. If planning to live, have a plan before moving there because there is still a cost of living in DR. The only difference for me is, my doctor visits are quick in the City vs doctor visits in DR where my wife has to step in to make sure they don't strip my pockets by trying to convince me that I need to stay overnight for observation 🤔🙄
I spoken on the internet many times. In Santo Domingo and Punta Cana it's fine. I can't speak on other areas because I have lived there. As far as 911 I don't know how reliable it is as I've never used it but I also haven't heard that it isn't.
The best pizza in the Dominican Republic to me is Caesars pizza from the USA I love it I have tried other pizza mainly local pizza stores they aren’t like USA pizza
The United States is worse since you guy’s left,I can’t wait to get the hell out of here, I don’t see anything positive happening here I’m just tying up some loose ends and then I’m out ✈️😂
Oh boy I just hope all the Americans don't ruin what we have in DR. USA has way to many violence all the time. The very little violence we have is with Haiti because they destroyed they're side and now want to destroy our side cutting our trees and robbing people. If Haiti people was more respectful to our country we would get along and wouldn't mind sharing. So I do hope that the people who do move to DR go with good intentions and not bad. I do like these videos and like to see humble people visit and stay in our little island. ❤
When people migrate to other countries we hope they don't go with bad intentions. Same with Dominicans migrating to the US, I'm sure Americans hope they don't go with bad intentions.

Wait a minute James not City Trends 😂 I feel you though. Places like Marshalls, DD’s and Ross be having good discounts. I stayed in Boca Chica for a week. There’s no fast food or Uber Eats there. That’s right learn all about the culture. I know I am 😂
They do have Uber eats and also an app called pedidos ya where you could also order food from
He loves Citi Trends😃. Do they have one in Washington?
I think it's a Wendy's or Burger King, one of those right when you're entering Boca Chica from Santo Domingo.....but they have great restaurants......and much healthier
God bless you both and may the Lord continue opening doors for you...
Thank you, we appreciate that.
Dee Dee's and CitiTrends? I haven't been to those in a minute. Lol. I do like the content of the video, and people have to go and see what culture speaks to them. For me Santiago speaks to me the best always.
I went to Sto Dgo and Santiago and I honestly loved Santiago the most, it speaks to me as well 😁
We agree with that👍🏾
I love you guys videos,
I’m moving to DR soon!!!
Congratulations 🎊
Excellent video, guys. I really appreciated James' honest assessment of the nature of social life and interactions, it's so important from a day-to-day perspective. Great info, thank you
Our pleasure!
Its a reason why people want to live in the big cites. Mostly convenience. Not many people want to live in Montana just to save money😂
@@NorberisR Montana? What's wrong with Montana. Ta largo!
In my opinion, iam from germany, its so wonderful there, i live the country, the people, santo domingo and there is everything, i speak spanisch and when i visit my family in santo domingo i can stay 6-8 weeks but then i have to come back, the heat is hard for me, and the darkness after 6 is crazy , and also the „pobreza“ i dont like to see that everywhere - but its nice for a view time there
Thanks for sharing.
Guys you are the best !!!
Like always enjoy listening you👍👍👍
Thank you.
Nice insight on the pros and cons of living in DR. Continue to enjoy the DR. Beautiful couple. God Bless you guys🙏🏼.
Thank you! Will do!
You guys got me thinking of moving to Santo Domingo
Blessings 🙏🏼🤍. I just started following both of you guys and im looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Awesome! Thank you🤗
@@NorberisR YW 🙏🏼🤍
Hi Norberis & your husband. I probably missed it on another one of your videos, but can you please share how you guys make a living? Thanks for sharing your experiences in my beautiful DR ✨️🙏🇩🇴
We have variety ways we earn money. My husband is an HR and Social Media Consultant so he has his own clients. We both have TH-cam Channles where we earn income from both channels. I manage Airbnb Properties here in DR. And I also offer consultations and relocation services.
I'm back there in 1 more month I can't wait 😃 I love DR❤
That's great. What area do you typically travel to?
I agree, if the economy worsens in the US I believe more and more Americans might move to DR which will cause over crowding and drive the prices up.
I will be retiring soon. We love my beautiful country. We just came back last night. We went house or condo hunting. We are almost there. My mother is from San Juan de la maguana
Awesome, I know you can't wait.
Great show!
always enjoyed ya'll videos! very informational keep it up...
Thanks! Will do!
Norberis, I'm from San juan de la maguana too. Alcántara and Reyez Bautista and Zabalas.
Too late Americans already beat you to the punch. Their already there
@@dumbphonemomthat sounds like a local government problem just like the states.
There are a few Macdonalds in Santo Domingo Este, at least 3 that I know. Also Many burger kings, Taco Bell, Wendy's and some more..
Thanks for that information.
Yes, good to know
@@krhodessch but in the main City/downtown there are many. (National District).
I’m from the Dominican Republic and I love there hopefully I move there for ever
🙌🏾
I can't wait to be back again in May 🛂✈️🇩🇴
🤗
Jay said he felt "suffocated" in the United States and I felt the exact same way! I don't miss much from the United States other than family and friends. In reference to fast food, I am not sure about Santo Domingo but almost everywhere I have been throughout the country there are food trucks that offer "comida chatarra."
Yes there are food trucks here, plenty of them.
Hi been following you for maybe two years I love your channel. Just want you to have another channel in Spanish because you guys do a lot of stuff that i go and would like to go . And a lot of Spanish speaking countries love DR but don’t speak English
I appreciate the recommendation but at the moment I don't have the time to create a second channel. Maybe one day I can.
Quiero el campo but with city conveniences😂😂😂😂
Yes that will be the perfect place 😄
My boy went at it with the fastfood
Bruh, did you just say city trends?!?!😂😂😂😂......love ya'll channels.
He did🤣
Good job and feel happy and comfortable were you live 😊
Yes 😊
Great decisión couple. Congrats🎉
Thank you.
Congratulations guys...
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC is the best place to live, but with money. So all the countries in the world are good to live witn money...
A lot of followers wish you the best you are a beautiful couple
Thank you so much!!
what i would miss is the clothing fashion. they dont have designer clothes the nice stuff DR dont have,
Depends on where live on the island. Santo Domingo has everything from Zara, Forever 21, Rue, American Eagle, Lemon, and much more.
Dominican time 🇩🇴
Hey James!! I didn't see anyone walking down the street with dat bottle in brown paper bag! Great city,be back in 2025!! Much ❤️ from 305!!
😃
Ya sabía que usted era Sanjuanera, igual que yo!!! 🇩🇴🇩🇴
Claro que si🧡
I can’t wait to go back in June
🤗🇩🇴
It's good you have that flexibility to go back and forth.🤗
If I moved to DR I would miss the driving conditions in the U.S.
😄
I am fortunate enough to be able to visit twice a year and sometimes when I’m really lucky 3 times a year, I would give anything to be able to live there and leave this monstrosity of a country forever
😅 I'm sure you'll figure out a way to make it happen.
Man!!! Norbeis is so beautiful and I love her accent. Can you teach my Dominican friend English, she lives in Los Alcarrizos?
My English structure is not good enough to teach someone the language. Also there would be a cost associated for me teaching her.
@@NorberisR Norbens, it's 100% better than her's, especially when she doesn't know any. LOL! I have have problem paying. Let's discuss your fee. Let's exchange numbers
@@NorberisR It's 100% better than her's, especially because she doesn't know any English. LOL! Let's exchange numbers or emails and discuss your fees.
But this bblack brother is more than welcome to our country 💙

Ayooo Legenda and da XV they be hitting 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yall should do like maybe two trips a year for the sole purpose to come buy clothes in the USA and take two maletas that’s what I plan to do
When we travel to the US for other purposes we try to do that. But to travel there for that sole purposes you might as well buy them here.
I miss the tjmax and marshals so whenever I go back to the us I shop shop
Yeeesss. We forgot to mention TJ Maxx yes that is another one.
same here!!!😜
My fav TH-cam couple 💯
🤗🇩🇴
Citi trends after the barbershop is crazy 🤣
😅
Hay mas islas en El Caribbean k uno puede visitar en tiempo de carnival para salir un poco de la monotonia y conoser algo different yea man
I have a couple of Leyendas that i havent opened yet, but have your tried Barcelo Dark?
We have tried all of them. And Leyenda is the best.
@@NorberisR thank you, I will open that bottle next.
Question, i wanted to visit in june but not sure about the weather, do you think its still a good time to visit dr?
The weather is the same year round pretty much. Now it's getting hotter.
Good Afternoon, How do you maintain your bills? Do you work in DR? Do you just depend on your businesses? Do you pay US taxes? What was your first step?
I earn money through my business and I still pay US taxes.
When I’m there for an extended period of time, I’m miss my Chicago pizza!
😋
I hate going to a bank in dr , it’s so hard to do banking in dr, it’ll take you all day between the traffic and the wait . I really hate it
Correct😅
Hola happy Sunday
Same to you
Did you guys work in DR?
I’m Dominican and live in NYC. I agree, the customer service in DR is nonexistent.
What do you mean work in DR? Do work for a Dominican company is this what you are asking?
@@NorberisRAlso, would you mind sharing your experience with the school system. @@NorberisR.
I don't recommend public schools for foreigners but I did do a video on International Schools. Here is the link th-cam.com/video/OnqUjdiJJzw/w-d-xo.html
The customer is not always right in DR. Some would probably miss that from the US.
Jaime parese dominicano yo pensava but we are the same people different language but the same people yea man
Claro🇩🇴
i have a question I will be there in May….Staying in Santo Domingo but i am venturing off out of the two which one do u prefer beach wise Barahona or Semana
Nice video. Enjoy living in DR. What about job opportunities in DR?
I don't recommend coming here to work. There are opportunities here.
No all our money is not in DR banks.
I definitely understand the suffocation and hamster wheel effect
How is the return policy there? I was told by a Dominican that the stores didn’t take returns. In the states, the stores take returns and certain stores there are no questions asked. Home Depot, you use the product once, then return it as if it had a problem.😂
They take returns but you get a store credit but you don't get your money back🤣.
Black men like DR for obvious reasons...Its usually nice living around what you like. But don't forget being American has made it easier for you to live like you do in the DR. There's a reason why people from DR like to come live in the US a lot.
Ok
I will say, if not for anything, at least visit the Republic of Dominica. If planning to live, have a plan before moving there because there is still a cost of living in DR.
The only difference for me is, my doctor visits are quick in the City vs doctor visits in DR where my wife has to step in to make sure they don't strip my pockets by trying to convince me that I need to stay overnight for observation 🤔🙄
😅
Sii mi madre San Juanera😂 candela chipa
What about reliable internet ,what about if there is a true emergency,911,can you depend on that?
I spoken on the internet many times. In Santo Domingo and Punta Cana it's fine. I can't speak on other areas because I have lived there. As far as 911 I don't know how reliable it is as I've never used it but I also haven't heard that it isn't.
The best pizza in the Dominican Republic to me is Caesars pizza from the USA I love it I have tried other pizza mainly local pizza stores they aren’t like USA pizza
You have bad taste in pizza if little Cesar's is the best🤣.
@@NorberisRyup 😂😅😂
What do you guys do for a living
We are content creators, real estate investors, and business owners
The United States is worse since you guy’s left,I can’t wait to get the hell out of here, I don’t see anything positive happening here I’m just tying up some loose ends and then I’m out ✈️😂
We understand 😊
What is a good business
There many opportunities here. Hard to say what's good. We did a video on business ideas you should check it out.
You guys should give Bangkok a try.
We do plan to visit Thailand. We want to visit.
I love the Dominican Republic but as a black man that don't speak Spanish you have to create a business before coming to live permanently in this beautiful country
