Johnny Cash talks about his drug use, his father's death, June Carter, and he sings for us!

  • My colleague, Tom Cottle, asked Johnny if he could go on if June Carter were taken from him. Johnny said that he could. June died in May of 2003, Johnny died less than four months later.
He is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Although primarily remembered as a country music icon, his genre-spanning songs and sound embraced rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. His signature songs include "I Walk the Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Ring of Fire", "Get Rhythm", and "Man in Black". He also recorded humorous numbers like "One Piece at a Time" and "A Boy Named Sue"; a duet with his future wife, June Carter, called "Jackson" (followed by many further duets after their marriage); and railroad songs including "Hey, Porter", "Orange Blossom Special" and "Rock Island Line". During the last stage of his career, Cash covered songs by several late 20th-century rock artists, notably "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails and "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.

It is good to hear this icon talk about his story and the actual disease of addiction. Most people who are uneducated about it can cause them to shame or abuse the person with addiction. I have personally undergone scrutiny by people who have never felt what it is like to be an addict. That is why I find it helpful to talk to counselors who have been through drug addiction and how they have continually stay in recovery. To me recovery is a life long process . Your always in recovery because you never can't predict the future and never when life can become a shit show which can be a trigger. The only thing we can do is to prepare ourselves the best we can with tools and resources available to help. All people deal with recovery of addiction differently because what can work for one person may not work for another. I commend Johnny Cash for trying because the weight of the disease is soo heavy, we can't always lift the burden alone. GOD bless all those who have succomed to addiction and may you find your own recovery and peace in your life ✌

Earth created in 7 days? Cmon, get fucking real already. Science keep debunking the flaws in religion, which makes it just less believable. Its also a bit strange how religion had to be forced upon people and thought to people from when they are kids, and that we're not born believing it.

Ed Earl, Jesus is the ONLY ONE who can show you HOW to get to heaven. I'm sure you broke some of the commandments . . . . admit it.... you are a
guilty sinner in need of forgiveness ! Open your eyes Ed, and take a look
at what Jesus went through on the cross to pay for your sins! In the Bible
book of Romans (5:8) it promises "But God commendeth his love toward
us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." and in 6:23 it says "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Now open your Bible & read...avoid hell !!!

+60Cascade - Johnny explains in the clip that he and June have been married for 18 years, and they got married in March of 1968 - so your estimate sounds about right. I would say 1st half of 1986.

Wanna hear an amazing acoustic cover that won't piss of even the biggest "doubters of ppl singing cover songs sung by an iconic musician like Johnny Cash" critics?? ( NIN did it so brilliantly😎) Look up Amanda Hyde/ acoustic cover of "HURT" on TH-cam.......it's amazing (& I'm one of those ppl who HATE all cover songs & have never met or heard of this very talented young lady (looks like 3 siblings?) but have my own talented kids so I gave it a go. It's AMAZING, seriously, I think Johnny Cash AND NIN's would be very impressed!!

    • @murray6512

While I agree that it probably was a slip of the tongue. Incarceration can take many forms; you can end up a prisoner in “institutions” other than State or Federal Prisons. What if drug dealers took you hostage and forced you to water their crop or peddle their pills against your will. Its possible you can be incarcerated in ways other than prison. His mannerisms right after saying that makes me think that this was a genuine slip of the tongue.

I would ask one question: is it true that you betrayed June while she was pregnant? With her sister?
Then if the answer would be yes I would ask June why she stayed with him.
I really would like to believe they really were soulmates. From the outside it sounded so inspiring. But maybe reality was a whole lot different...
    Sad.
